Yeah, it’s a small sample size but he’s seemingly just running right past these poor kids, just like against Canada and Mexico in the CONCACAF U17 tourney. It is what it is though. Dominate the level and grab your chance when it comes.
Yeah................I mean, I believe that was his first official U19 Bundesliga game. If Dortmund sees consistent performance at a high level, they'll advance him. But I suspect that's the team he'll be with the overwhelming majority of the season. Most of our elite youth in the Bundesliga jumped straight (or essentially straight) from the U19s to the first team. Pulisic, McKennie, Sargent, etc. played very few combined games for the reserve teams. The reserve teams seem more like a holding pen for question marks. The Junior Flores types.
Just a name to keep an eye on. The former FCD academy player has been linked previously with moves to bigger clubs........................ 1161648249507368960 is not a valid tweet id
If Dest is going to be starting for Ajax, he may run away with the breakout youngster title. But we'll see. Lots of youngsters about to break thru. With the way Bremen played yesterday, hopefully Sargent will get a more extended look soon. 👏🏽 Sergiño Dest earns his first @eredivisie start for @AFCAjax today, with @HajiWright also on the bench for @VVVVenlo.Watch live at 12:30pm ET on ESPN+. https://t.co/Wo7FfB4NJR pic.twitter.com/yhAKXHsoUv— U.S. Soccer YNT (@USYNT) August 17, 2019
Any report on how Dest played? This US Team desperately needs young stud defenders... probably just as much, if not more, than they need a true striker. It doesn't bode all that well that Sargent was the very last sub to come on... with only 9 minutes or so to play. He looks really fast... but I worry that their coach would bring on a 40 year old striker before a 20 year old one given the deficit they were in. I hope I am wrong and that Josh gets some legit minutes soon.
I didn't see, but I thought that Dest and Gloster were the difference for the US U-20 World Cup Squad. They added a lot to both the attack and defense and created a dynamic field that allowed Pomykal + Weah to do damage and Soto to poach. I'm not sure who was the better of the two, but Dest was a standout in that tournament.
I didn't watch the whole game, but I thought he was fine but umremarkable in the time I did. I'm not really surprised -- on the US U20s, he's the most capable defender playing forward and one of the more capable players with the ball period. On Ajax, the offense tends to flow through other players, so Dest really didn't get a ton of opportunities.
I watched the second half. He played his usual style,.pushing up whenever the opportunity was there to take. He did not make any glaring errors. Because Ajax was very dominant, Dest was given the freedom to play very dynamically, in a couple of instances he was like another CDM. The only goal given in the game came from the opposite side, away from Dest.
Josh entered in the 82 and made the best of his time. He had a late full volley shot inside the 18 that Steffen had to make a good save for. As far as young defenders Miazga went the full 90 with Reading in a 3-0 win and is in the whoscored.com Championship team of the week.
I watched the Bremen game. Steffan and Morales played very well. I was kind of surprised at how animated the latter was during the game. Very fiery for a young guy in that league. He is one to watch for... his side is not filled with a ton of talent so I think he is going to see a ton of minutes this year. Therein lies the rub w/ several of young US MNT hopefulls in Euro this year... will they get the minutes required to really improve? I thought Josh's volley was pretty impressive... and his burst is legit.... but you have to wonder if they keep subbing him in that late in the game. It seems like he is going to need to make the most of his opportunities.
Now that Dest has made his debut.......................who's next? US U20 Uly Llanez has started the season really strong for Wolfsburg U19s. Could be him or Alex Mendez or Richie Ledesma. I don't think it's likely to be Chris Richards. 🇺🇸🐺 Our Young Yank has enjoyed a flying start to the season! @uly_soccer7 scored a brace this weekend for @VfLWolfsburg_US U-19 against @werderbremen_en U-19! #USMNTThat's now 4 goals in two games for Llanez! 🔥🔥🔥 pic.twitter.com/DtROthVFMg— VfL Wolfsburg US 🇬🇧🇺🇸 #GetENwithUS (@VfLWolfsburg_US) August 18, 2019
This is Dutch second division, but a debut appearance in the 18 for Alex Mendez! Alex Mendez makes his first appearance in the match-day squad for Jong Ajax, will start on the bench. https://t.co/2J9Yc4bStU— scuffed (@scuffedpod) August 19, 2019
I'm surprised nobody talks about Cappis, he is starting week in, week out. A solid performance each time.
Sure. Cappis is on our radar over on the youth boards. We probably don't talk about him a lot on these boards because nobody watches the Danish league. Not much to say. If we could see their full games, we'd talk more about Sabbi and Cappis. Cappis was probably one of the last cuts from our US U20 team. In the end, three other FCD academy midfielders made that roster (Pomykal. Servania, Cerrillo). FCD tried to also sign Cappis, but he was deemed ineligible to sign for them by the league.
I think it's a little out of sight, out of mind, if you compare the amount talked about to Servania or Cerillo. And it's a little that the Danish league is somewhere in the vicinity of MLS. If he was tearing it up, I think he'd have a lot more hype in the range of a Pomykal (and he'd deserve it). But right now, he's starting but not necessarily starring for a team that, if I had to peg it, is probably lower MLS or higher USL level than say, Ajax first team. Or the level Pomykal is playing in MLS. Of course, he should be "in the conversation".... but until he's one of the better players on Hobro, I'm not sure he makes the final cut.
Shrug. I don't think anybody would have a problem if Berhalter called him up for a friendly to "take a look." The only way to know how a Danish League player stacks up against an MLSer is to call 'em up and take a look side-by-side. Cappis is more of #6/8. So he does fall into a "problem area" for the USMNT. He didn't make the U20WC team, but that team was also stacked in the midfield. Frankie Amaya is getting a lot of minutes for Cincy, started the CONCACAF U20 Championship semifinal and final.................... and didn't make the cut either for the World Cup.
I think Cappis was called toward the end of the WC selection. First time I saw him was at the last camp.
I would. He is on a deep periphery of youth players. I'd rather have Servania tried, but that's not urgent either.
I found this linky w/ some highlights: https://www.instagram.com/p/B1WxP5lB7lz/ Not sure if this includes the brace of which you speak... but the highlights are pretty impressive.
Chris Richards made his debut for Bayern II yesterday. 1163559030603866112 is not a valid tweet id Alex Mendez made his debut for Jong Ajax in the Dutch second division. nothing earth-shattering, but here are a couple nice instances of composure in his defensive third pic.twitter.com/saoWUwC1Ql— scuffed (@scuffedpod) August 19, 2019
Uly Llanez (formerly of the Galaxy academy) molesting teams early in the Bundesliga U19 season. He ended up with 2 goals and an assist today. So............... Uly Llanez is on FIRE. 🔥3 straight braces for Wolfsburg U-19's. pic.twitter.com/VYfNjyrZAx— USMNT Only (@usmntonly) August 21, 2019
Shrug. Cappis is starting week to week in the Danish league now. We don't see the games, but apparently he's impressing folks. Congrats to '99 Christian Cappis, named to the league TOTW by Danish media. Dark-horse versatile midfield option who wouldn't be out of place on the Olympic qualifying squad.— ChuckMe92 Soccer (@ChuckMe92Soccer) August 20, 2019 Once you're starting and performing in a league that's at least even with MLS, you're "in the pool" for a potential callup. I would agree that he's probably in the pool for the US U23 Olympic team first.
The league isn't necessary at current MLS level, Hobro is a bad team in that league, and if you put in the pool everyone from that league, you, basically, should put everyone from MLS as well. Something like 300 players.
Man, at that point you have to move him up to the next squad. 3 straight braces for a wing player? That's pretty ridiculous. He's clearly a cut above that league.
