completely agree. its shambolic. Disrespectful of fans. Imagine College football doing the same thing. There would be outrage. It also allows the subjectivity with so much to continue. So much of womens soccer from college thru pro is a narrative that is carefully managed by many. They thrive because of the lack of real data
xG definitely has value, but it's not without limitations. It takes into account mainly the spot on the field at which the chance occurs. So an attempted shot from 8 yards is going to rate as an expected goal, regardless of whether said chance is a cross rolling smoothly on a perfect surface with no defenders around, or a bouncing ball on a crappy field with a defender hanging on the attacker's back. Allowances are made for headers (more difficult), but not for other variables such as whether it's a first-time shot, etc. Over the course of a long season, xG tends to give a fairly realistic picture of a team's chance-creation capabilities; but in any one given game, or over the course of the relatively short college season, it can be a little misleading.
Re: stats, yeah they're generally pretty bad. Most schools, even P5s with a big budget, don't have 'soccer people' in game day operations. So the person counting shots and tracking subs often isn't really invested in it, or very knowledgable about what they're watching. The best solution imo is stats provided by third party experts, like InStat or other analytics services used by the schools, but then the schools are paying for this information, and in most cases don't want it out there for public dissemination.
The excitement is building! Exhibition games are going on all week. If you hear scores or details please share.
At FSU, I'm not sure we even play them. If we do, we don't hear about them. We now have our roster updated with pictures. Yay! I have a question about ACCN versus ACCNX. In looking at the schedule, I see the TV available. Sometimes it's the ACCN, and others it's ACCNX. Is ACCN the ESPN3 option on my computer? Is ACCNX the new ACC channel equivalent to the SECN?
ACCN vs ACCnX seems to be about broadcast vs streaming. ACCN's material selling the new network doesn't seem helpful in figuring this out. Here is what Wikipedia says. ACC Network (ACCN) is an upcoming American subscription-television channel that is owned by ESPN Inc. Announced on July 21, 2016, it will be dedicated to coverage of the Atlantic Coast Conference, and will launch on August 22, 2019. The channel will operate from ESPN's headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut, though some programming and staff will be based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Ahead of the linear channel's launch and as part of ESPN's new contract with the conference, ESPN launched the digital platform ACC Network Extra(ACCNX) on WatchESPN in 2016, which streams ACC events not broadcast on television. We are going to have to wait and see but overall it seems like a net loss compared to last year's pretty good soccer coverage. Unless money for the subscriptions is no object.
Actuallly you would be surprised at. The depth of the statistics taken. Most schools utilize a software program that analyzes every touch on the ball for each player but that’s not something they want out because it would make it that much easier for opposing teams to gameplan with. I think most schools provide the minimum required by the ncaa
you would be surprised how much schools exchange game film. they actually help each other gameplan. The stats embargo is more about not giving it to fans than anything else
All ACC Programs are required to upload their games to instat. this gives the coach like 30 pages of very detailed stats for each game. they can also see every teams game film and its pretty much already broken down for the coaches. there really aren't any secrets anymore
haha no they don't have to upload injury information. But you can literally see every players individual touches on instat. it also breaks down their offensive set pieces, defensive set pieces, etc. . . no excuses for coaches not to have their teams prepared to play someone
Virginia 2 Illinois 0 Alexa Spaanstra converted a PK and Alyssa Gorzak also scored as the Cavaliers concluded their annual week in Michigan with a neutral field game with Illinois.
Virginia 3 Random boys team 0 Regular season for Virginia begins this Friday with a home opener vs the Irvine Anteaters.
Just realized Virginia plays their first seven games at home. Some tough opposition in there, but that's a great chance to get off to a strong start.
