Garber talking at MLS all star halftime show is still bullish on Sacramento's expansion team bid!

    Go Sac!

From the Sacramento Bee today -

    1. Ben Gumpert, Republic FC president, said Wednesday there are no hang-ups. Instead, he said the deal, which will cost the private investor group more than a half-billion dollars, is complex and takes time.

Hmm, it took Cincy and Nashville less than half the time to complete the deal. Just sayin'

    2. It’s a complicated process,” Gumpert said. “Every day is a step forward. We’re 100 percent committed to making it happen. We are in a good spot.”

Ben sounds like an U6 parent on gameday. Only thing missing was "good kick, honey! Juice boxes for everyone!"

    3. Steinberg acknowledged the difficulty of the ongoing talks, but said he is “not concerned at all” by the lack of a resolution... Everyone is stepping up. All the anticipation will make the end result even sweeter.”

Mayor Darrell "Big Bird" Steinberg chooses to stick his head in the sand again. This has all the signs of "I'm stayin' in the locker room, 'cuz I know this game is headed nowhere." That giant sucking sound was the vacuum of leadership from City Hall.

Look...I love Ben Gumpert. He (and Joe Waggoner and Todd Dunivant) met with fans for pizza and beer at the SRFC office last year when things were going sideways. I'll always have respect for the man.

But he's kinda been dealt a busted flush here.

SRFC started with dynamic and fan-focused leadership in Warren Smith, and dynamic and people-centered political leadership in Kevin Johnson. This has since given way to Kevin Nagle and Mayor Turd-Under-His-Nose.

The team won the USL PRO cup in 2014, and has flamed out of the playoffs embarrassingly ever since, except for the one year we went up to 1st seed Real Monarchs and beat them in the first round before falling the next week.

The fans were spoiled from the get-go, and it's been apparent for all to see that the last couple of seasons the team's priority has been MLS. So when they got blindsided by the CIN/NSH decision, neither SRFC leadership nor the mayor nor the fanbase knew quite what to do. As a result, the bloom has come off of the rose a fair bit.

We cannot depend on Burkle Bucks to shore up the roster or make improvements to PMP, because Burkle's involvement is MLS-contingent, as is any replacement stadium now on the drawing board. And, every time SRFC and the City go anywhere near the MLS board, they fall farther and farther down the pecking order, to probably now #29 behind STL, and is 6/5 you-pick-em for being #30 behind CLT.

If PHX gets its act together in the next two years, we may well be buggered.

It didn't have to happen this way. If KJ didn't get into legal/moral trouble, if Sacramento had elected Angie Ashby instead of Darrell Turd-Under-His-Nose, if SRFC hadn't had the schism in the initial MLS bid (see back to roughly page 90 in this thread), if if if...

When MLS first started, it was thought that Rochester would be a lock for the first expansion side. Rabid fanbase, SSS, stable ownership, championship culture. They had it all. Then the first Miami experiment came along. When that (and TB) failed, surely Rochester would get their team...but up out of nowhere popped SLC and Chivas and the Westward expansion. The rest is history, and now the Rhinos crashed out of USL, and are scrambling to get back into USL-1 by maybe the 2021 season.

I pray we do not become the next Rochester. History does not repeat itself, but it often rhymes.

    So...what happened?

    https://www.si.com/soccer/2019/08/1...rolyn-kindle-betz-miami-nashville-austin-2022

MLS announced in April that it intended to expand to 30 teams and that St. Louis and Sacramento were leading the race for Nos. 28 and 29. Those spots would come with a $200 million expansion fee. The fee, the schedule, and the candidates for No. 30 remained undefined.

The dynamic has shifted since, however, as Charlotte Panthers owner David Tepper has lobbied heavily for a team that would play at Bank of America Stadium. Meanwhile, it remains unclear whether Sacramento Republic owner Ron Burkle, who replaced Kevin Nagle as the successful USL club’s lead MLS investor, is ready to agree to that $200 million fee and all the associated commitments associated with expansion.

“These are lifetime decisions for a board to make and for an investor to make,” Garber said in Orlando. “There’s a process that we go through that is really really time consuming. These are massive commitments at this point. When you get involved in an MLS team now with the [$200 million] expansion fee and the stadium, it’s a minimum of $500 million dollars. And finalizing those deals take time."

He added that Sacramento, if approved, also was eyeing a 2022 start. He said conversations with Burkle “are positive and they will continue.”

Later Wednesday, Republic released the following statement: "We are in daily discussions with Major League Soccer as we finalize the agreement to bring an expansion club to Sacramento. We are deeply appreciative of the ongoing efforts of Commissioner Garber, his MLS colleagues and owners, the Republic FC investor group, and Mayor Darrell Steinberg, as we work in unison to get the deal done for our city and our incredibly patient fan base."

At a certain point, you have to wonder whether this is business, theater, or farce.

For my part, I am no longer confident (at all) that SRFC will enter MLS. Moreover, I'm not all that certain that SRFC should enter MLS at this point.

In any event, this "you'll be next" vibe that MLS keeps sending out to the Sacramento folks is getting tiresome, and I don't wanna play any more.

While I get where you guys are coming from and I do not trust Garble/MLS further than I can throw them, I say that SI article is trash.

Nothing has changed. Ya'll are still in at 28/29. Just gonna take a week or two more. MLS does not want to announce two at the same time anyway. St. Louis has their 15 minutes next week. Yours will be coming soon, before Labor Day.

If it stretches much beyond that, I will join you on the ledge.

Sacramento will get a Major League Rubgy team before it gets into the MLS expansion. How sad that is.

I guess I'll have to buy season tickets for the goonies and pull my plane out of the hangar.

Anyone want to sandbag with me on my plane for a few games? The stadium is less than a ten minute walk from the tarmac.

This pisses me off to no end. As a fierce supporter of Sacramento getting expansion, I have had an emotional block in supporting the team ownership since the previous time they botched it. I even stopped going to the games.

I likened the last round as this: you head out to a nightclub with all your buds. You're all dressed snazzy, horny, got cologne on, got no girlfriends. You all show up to the nightclub and no one has money to pay cover. You got an open bar inside, got access to the VIP lounge, but can't seem to get into the door because your crew doesn't have the cash to get inside. This was Sacramento last time. Now, they're saying that negotiations are difficult and I would bet anyone a Hamilton that they're not wanting to play ball in the board room. It's a big circle jerk and they're all fighting to see who could hold the big dick.

It pisses me off that I concur with you and I think the team ownership/management have a sense of entitlement over getting into the expansion. At that point, I'd rather them not getting it on principle.

I'm looking forward to Sacamento getting into MLR expansion. I'll buy season tickets to local rugby matches. Hell yes.

Sorry for the Friday night rant.
