I count 7 English managers in the Premier League now. Have I missed someone?

Even if 7 isn't such an impressive number, the age and attitude of the coaches is.

There's 8 - Bruce, Lampard, Wilder, Hodgson, Dyche, Potter, Smith, Howe.

There's also Rodgers who will undoubtedly be in contention for England job next time it comes up as well as i'm pretty sure the FA's England manager policy extends to home grown managers.

Certainly looks a lot more positive for life after Southgate when you consider the last time the job came up the favourites list was rounded out by Bruce, Pardew, Hoddle, and Howe.

A decent start to the season for Cooper, Bowyer and Parker.

Which championship manager have you been most impressed with?

All of the above, and don't forget Lee Johnson who might finally get Bristol into the playoffs this season.

There are a few stories about Emery's position at Arsenal today that reveal Rodgers and Howe made the long list for the Arsenal job last summer but not the cut for the short list (which was Allegri, Arterta, Henry, Lopetgui, Rangnick, Sampaoli, and Vieira)

Great to see Gerrard win the league in Scotland. Looks like only once before has a manager from England won this title; some bloke called Frank Heaven in 1904 with long defunct Third Lanark. Rangers have been competitive in Europe also and seem to play attractive football. Interested to see if he can build on this.

Howard Wilkinson in 1992 was the last English manager to win the top division in England although around that era Terry Venables & Sir Bobby Robson were winning titles in Iberia and the Netherlands. In the 21st century though I think it is only Roy Hodgson & Steve McClaren who have won the title in a major (UEFA coefficient; Eredivisie #8, SPL #11, Danish Superliga #14) league so it is a fine achievement for him.:notworthy:

Nearly 30 years since a local (English) manager won the league. We must have the worst record in Europe with regard to this stat.

I was hoping Lampard could end this drought at Chelsea.

Maybe it will be Gerrard at Liverpool...

English managers simply don't get the chance with any clubs that have the slightest chance of winning the Premier League, I imagine that Rednapp would win the league if he managed Manchester City! English managers suffer from stereotypical prejudice, people 'laugh' at Alladyce but when Bolton Wanderers had him in charge they tended to finish around 6th to 10th in the Premier League, say what you like but I believe that Thomas Tuchel would have some problems getting that club to those kind of 'giddy heights' no?

Its amazing to think that in 1998 Arsene Wenger was the FIRST manager from outside the British Isles to win the English league! EVERY other manager up until then was either English or Scottish apart from Bob Kyle who was from Belfast and he took Sunderland to the title in the 1912-1913 season! Equally amazing to think that Howard Wilkinson was the last English manager to win it in 1991-92, NO English manager has ever won the Premier League!

You look at the top 4 from last season and most likely this season, none recruited there manager from within the Prem, all where hired from abroad. They rarely take risks and hire within the league, they all pluck a manager from one of the other top European leagues. There’s so much money in the Premier league there is no need to take risks, you can take a ready made top manager from elsewhere.

I reckon I would have a good chance of winning it if I worked at a club with City's resources!

With Steve Bruce's inevitable sacking at Newcastle we will be down to 3 English coaches in the Premier League. Sean Dyche, Graham Potter & Dean Smith.

Out of jobs: Frank Lampard, Eddie Howe, Chris Wilder

Championship: Neil Warnock, Nigel Pearson, Tony Mowbray, Mark Warburton from an older generation. A bit younger are Lee Bowyer, Scott Parker, Neil Critchley, Wayne Rooney & Gary Rowett.

Any of those winning the Premier League ? :ROFLMAO:

Agree with @Regis Prograis on the reason why it will be so difficult for it to happen.

It shouldn't be acceptable and you cannot argue that opportunity and risk is a major obstacle too?

Jurgen Klopp started at Mainz and was backed by Dortmund as his next step. Thomas Tuchel's first major job was Mainz from Augsburg II & Stuttgart academy and then got the Dortmund job. That isn't happening a lot here. That sort of move. It might be due to quality but also the quality off opposition in numbers and finances clubs who back English managers are up against don't you think? So what determines you proving yourself to get the opportunity at the next level ?

Julian Nagelsmann another example from youth football to Hoffenheim and backed by a big German club and then inevitably outside Germany. There is that pathway there.

Arsenal and Manchester Untied haven't had a permanent English manager in 35 years, Chelsea have had one in the last 25 years. Liverpool have had one in the last 23 years.

Man City never had a foreign Manager (non English or Scottish) in their history, until their takeover in 2007, and haven't had one since. And lets be honest they won't likely have one again anytime soon.

I agree that England hasn't produced enough good coaches, but the pathway isn't there to the top jobs. Do you think if Hansi Flick was an English coach he would have been hired to the best English club in the country?

This EXACTLY! English managers amongst everything else have to battle a huge amount of prejudice, some posts on here are a good example of such prejudice. Eddie Howe took Bournemouth to the Premier League BOURNEMOUTH! Why isn't he managing a top club? I would like to see Guardiola take Crawley Town to the Premier League! Of course HE will never have to, he just jumps from one super wealthy club to the next where he spends hundreds of millions of pounds on the world's greatest players to keep his reputation!

If Southgate can outperform Capello as England manager, then I'm sure Redknapp or Allardyce etc could outperform Pellegrini or Ancelloti etc as Man City or Chelsea manager.

The best wingers that Capello had to work with were Young, Milner and Walcott.
