Since the trade isn't effective until Jan 1st, does that mean the Quakes will have to protect Godoy in the presumed expansion draft? (Those are still a thing, right?) . I guess it doesn't matter but that is kind of annoying assuming that's the case.

I think the trade is a win-win-win.

As a starter MLS team, Nashville SC is cash-rich and player-poor. They are getting a proven MLS veteran and international who is not too old, can help hold down the center of the field and has a fair amount of passing skill and defensive bite. His salary is a little high maybe, but they just need pieces and he is a solid choice.

SJ are able to free up a fair amount of cap space and while they are losing depth in one position, we are no longer as dependent on Godoy as we were previously. If we got nothing for him it would be one thing, but picking up a bunch of allocation $$ sweetens things. And best of all it won't be John Doyle spending it anymore.

And Godoy is benefitting from the fact that there is an expansion team in that it creates more player positions in the league, which means more demand for veteran midfielders, which means he can get paid better and get more minutes. No need to accept a pay cut and/or reduced role when there is another team that needs you. Plus the cost of living in Tennessee is probably a wee bit lower for what it's worth.

 

He was an expensive acquisition, and I think publicly being very positive about getting him is the only reasonable choice. You certainly don't want to downplay the signing when you gave up so much for him. I agree that I don't see him playing especially well for Nashville. I'm assuming Smith will remain the coach for the team, and I don't see that going very well, frankly. Smith hasn't coached at the MLS level in a long time, and the difference between 2010 and 2019 has been huge.

 

Not necessarily. We don't know what expensive means in terms of allocation numbers.

Remember that no cash changes hands here. Allocation funds are just numbers on a Spreadsheet used to manage the flexible salary cap. I would expect that the league grants expansion teams a hearty chunk of GAM in their first year to give them the chance to acquire veteran players. So trading some numbers on a Spreadsheet for a quality player may not be expensive relative to the GAM given to an expansion team.

And we don't actually know how much GAM they get so it's not clear to me how expensive this may be.

Also, my limited understanding is that GAM only applies to one season and more GAM would be needed in subsequent years to keep things under the cap.

I believe that the deal was for 2020 GAM which is good for the Quakes who will need it in 2020 to keep some players under the DP cap.

 

I really don't think allocation money is as nebulous as you think it is. 650k could be used to buy down a lot of salary to fit players under the maximum per player limit. It has a lot of concrete value in terms of teams getting into roster compliance. How much of an impact that 650k has for an expansion team might depend on how much they get in total, so I understand your point with regard to the term "expensive", but how many times do you see that much allocation money changing hands between teams? I stand by my assessment that it's a lot, and I think Nashville is making a mistake in trading so much of it away to get a player with a mixed history in the league.

 

Yeah, there's positive and then there's delusional positive...haha...like you don't have a freaking clue what you're doing positive. Their GM sounded like JD gushing about a career Dmid with one goal to his name in 10 years being our next great attacking centermid

The GM was talking about his untapped potential playing further up field...I almost spit out my coffee.

 

I think i read an mlssoccer article about the transfer, with the Nashville (and former SKC) guy talking about how he’d followed Godoy since Godoy played his first game against SKC. If he had really seen one iota of Godoy on the last 2 years, there’s no way he would still be so impressed. The guy must be an idiot, and Nashville sounds like it will have a first year like FC Cincinnati’s.
