A lot of teams start playing Friday August 30. This year I did not wait for the USC Pre-season poll to make this post. Ranks refer to the D3Soccer.com end of 2018 rankings.

Here are TOP 25 Games for August-September 2019. Most teams Live Stream their games for free and you can get the streams by going to the school’s Woso schedule page (or the opponent’s schedule page) and find the links.

Teams with no Top 25 game in Aug-Sep
#3 Middlebury and #19 MIT (#1 Williams and #14 Amherst meet on 9/28 for their only Top 25 game in Aug-Sep)

    More on the D3 Schedule.

Johns Hopkins (18-3-0) once again is rocketing out of the gate – 5 games in 9 days, starting with Roanoke and #9 Lynchburg at Roanoke, and including road games at #5 Messiah on 9/4 and at #22 Stevens on 9/7. Followed by road games vs TCNJ, Rowan, and PS Berks on 9/11, 9/14, and 9/18. (3 more road games in 8 days)

I noted three teams that seem to be stretching their out of conference (OOC) schedules.

    Grove City
    (17-4-1):
Upset Chicago 2-1 before losing to Center in the 2018 NCAAs.
In 2019 they open at Messiah (8/30), host Carnegie Mellon (9/11), and meet Hardin-Simmons and Mary Hardin Baylor in Texas on 9/20 & 9/21. In the 2018 regular season, the only “name” team they played was Carnegie Mellon.

    Penn State – Berks (15-4-2):
Have averaged 5.2 goals per game from 2014 thru 2018 and lost in OT to Emory in the first round of the 2018 NCAAs.
In 2019, they play at Messiah, at Swarthmore, and host Johns Hopkins – with Messiah the new addition for this season.

    Mary Hardin Baylor (12-5-2):
In the same conference as Hardin Simmons and Texas-Tyler (now D2); they did not make the 2018 NCAAs.
In 2019, they open vs. Cal Lutheran and William Smith, and have Christopher Newport on 9/20 and Grove City on 9/21, all in Texas. Their 2018 OOC schedule included a trip to Tacoma to play Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran.

[I lived a couple of years in Houston and can appreciate pride in the Lone Star State. From the UMHB web site:
UMHB was chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas making us the oldest continuously operating college in the state.]

I am new to watching D3 as some of my buddies have left D1 to coach in D3– what are some programs on the rise? I know about the usual suspects but any Midwest and north schools as I am looking to see about teams to follow beside U of Chicago?

It would be great if @PlaySimple could make some suggestions - you can see his posts in last year's thread https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/division-3-2018.2085991/.

I would say Hope College (42.8 degrees north latitude) may be a team to watch - they lost in the NCAA first round in 2016, second round in 2017, and sectional semifinals in 2018; however they have lost 11 seniors, including all three of their MIAA All-League players. OTOH with 18 years at the helm, head coach Dr. Leigh Sears will probably have her Flying Dutch at the top of the league again.

The University of St. Thomas (44.9 degrees north latitude) is another possibliity. Head Coach Sheila McGill - Coming off conference championships in 2015, 2016 and 2018, McGill enters her 13th year at the helm of the Tommies in 2019. Her last four teams posted a 60-15-6 overall record. They are losing 7 seniors, including 2X All American forward Mallory DeBoom.

I'd suggest watching a few D3 games and find a team that has a style you like. Enjoy!

Thanks @Midwest Ref. Maybe that partially explains why NESCAC teams tend to play unranked local opponents in their early season non-conference schedule. It gives them a chance to sort out the roster and tactics during September, whereas other top teams that schedule early Top 25 non-conference games (as discussed by @CoachJon above) better have their rosters and tactics gelled by the end of August.

In earlier years, I have read posts by NESCAC fans expressing frustration by the NESCAC teams' tendency to schedule unranked non-conference opponents. However, you cannot argue with the results.

This is along the lines of what the Ivy League does in Division I. The Ivies and at least a number of the NESCAC teams, back in the day, used to play each other regularly. They still work to maintain a culture that says sports are part of the learning experience but need to be kept in a proper perspective and secondary to academics.

My kid is going to be a freshman on the men's side, so I'm new to this, but two things jump to mind. 1). The non-con games are local with minimal travel, especially during the week, which is in keeping with less missed class time. 2). Much like the SEC in football, the NESCAC schedule itself is so tough that 5 NESCAC teams made the men's NCAAs last year.

Anywhere in particular in the Midwest? It's a big region.

There are a lot of good teams in the Midwest. U of Chicago is already mentioned and there's no reason to believe that they won't be decent again. All-American Jenna McKinney is graduated but there are some solid players coming up and with U of Chicago's academic profile they always get a good incoming class.

Washington U will also be good again. The 22-1 national semifinalists from last year did lose some players but I believe that most of the back line, that only gave up 6 goals over the entire season, will be back. Emma Greenfield, the keeper, will be a junior this upcoming season.

The CCIW has put out their preseason picks today and have again picked Wheaton to win the conference. Wheaton has some good players coming back and the head coach, Pete Felske, always does a good job with recruiting. Felske is going into his 32nd season at Wheaton.

Illinois Wesleyan and Augustana are tied for 2nd in the conference and should be decent. Augustana beat IWU 2-0 in the regualr season last year but IWU got revenge in the CCIW playoffs, winning 2-1. IWU has most of their team coming back and will be tested early with matches against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, UW-LaCrosse, Calvin, Chicago, U of St. Thomas, and Wheaton all in their first 10 games of the season. That's a pretty brutal start to the season.

Augustana doesn't have nearly as grueling of an out of conference schedule as IWU so will need to win the majority of those games if they want at-large consideration in the post-season of they're not the CCIW champs.

Other than Hope, I feel another team to watch in the MIAA (Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association) will be Calvin. Calvin has a young 2nd year coach in Emily Ottenhoff that looks to have the program going in the right direction. She's got a good soccer mind and Calvin will be a decent side this year. Calvin opens the season vs Wash U and before the end of September will also play Illinois Wesleyan, Wheaton, Ohio Northern, and Chicago. I like it when teams test themselves prior to conference play. The MIAA schedule will also be tough against some teams that are usually decent like Kalamazoo, Adrian, Albion, and the already mentioned Hope.

In the OAC (Ohio Athletic Conference) I would expect Ohio Northern, Otterbein, and Capital all to have decent sides. All of the schools are well coached and have a lot of talent coming back from teams that did well last year.

I'll add more later if I think about it.

Here's a guide from D3soccer.com that you might find helpful:

    https://d3soccer.com/teams/region/index-women

It categorizes the schools by region. The name of each school is hot-linked so you can select it and get the schedule and results for the upcoming season. On each team page there are also facts about the team, a link to the team's website, historical information with schedules and scores, news releases about the school, and conference standings. Also if you looked at the schedules you'll see letters on the right side of the games. Those will be updated as the season goes along and link to box scores and sometimes a link to the live feeds of the games. If you want to see a particular game and those letters are not on the D3 site just go to the web pages of one of the schools and there will often be a link to the video. As you probably know, the games can be casted to your TV. Some video productions are much better than others. A lot of times camera work is sub-par and it makes the game very hard to watch. Some schools have very good productions. Wheaton, in particular, is very good, The camera work and commentary is excellent for a student production.

In the states you mentioned, Wisconsin and Minnesota, there are some good teams. The WIAC (Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) is usually somewhat competitive among the top teams. The WIAC is composed entirely of U of Wisconsin branch schools. LaCrosse and Whitewater are usually somewhat competitive though Whitewater struggled a bit last year. Stevens Point was good last year and should be decent again this upcoming year. Jason Murphy is the coach at LaCrosse and is doing an excellent job there. They've only lost 5 games over the past two season. Murphy is an excellent recruiter and coach and LaCrosse has great facilities for a D3 program. LaCrosse plays a pretty tough OOC schedule and should make a run in the postseason should they qualify and there's no reason to believe that they won't.

St. Thomas, a team mentioned earlier, is another team to keep an eye on. St. Thomas made it to the 2nd round of the NCAA last season and should again be competitive.

Going just a bit south from Minnesota and Wisconsin are the schools in Iowa that are members of the American Rivers Conference. The ARC is usually pretty competitive and Loras, Watburg, Luther, and Dubuque should all be decent this season. Loras went the the 2nd round of the NCAA last year before losing to Wheaton, 2-1. Wartburg also made the NCAA post-season but lost to LaCrosse in the first round.

If you are interested in the men at all, the D3soccer site also covers them.

Lynchburg has the potential to be the quickest to fall out of the rankings. By 9/26 they will have played Hopkins, C-Newport and an always tough Emory. And Lynchburg, based on a previous post, lost 9 starters to graduation. That’s a boatload to lose to face those quality teams out of the gate.

If Emory was in any other conference they might be ranked more consistently IMHO...

Willaim Smith and TCNJ both held serve against Hardin and Swarthmore in statistically close 1 goal games.

Hopkins easily handled Lynchburg 2-0 (shots were 2x for Hopkins despite the coach platooning all 10 field players at the 25 min mark and clearing his bench)

WashStl couldn’t get past/around/over/under the bus that Hope parked in front of the goal despite lopsided shooting and corner stats. Good on Hope for the draw.

Truthfully, I love these kinds of games. They're part of what makes soccer great. And, I know there are others who feel and think just the opposite. But seeing the ecstasy on one side and the agony on the other is fantastic.

Agreed. In the past I never liked that approach. I thought it was "anti-soccer." It took many years but my Columbian friend finally illuminated my thinking. He spoke about those types of performances with such great passion. Eventually I could see it but it took a very long time of watching those tactics with a fan. It definitely makes the game richer!

It’s beautiful desperation. It’s the hail Mary pass for 90 mins plus! It’s every seafaring story of a ship that makes it thru the hurricane - overmatched and on the verge of being swamped, they survive.

    Only the hurricane feels betrayed.

Top 25 vs. top 25 Results from Friday and Saturday

    #5 William Smith 1-0 over #10 Hardin-Simmons; 2OT 102nd minute goal
    #8 TCNJ 1-0 over #14 Swarthmore; 8th minute goal
    #3 WashU 0-0 draw vs. #15 Hope
    #16 Johns Hopkins 2-0 over #11 Lynchburg; 5th & 85th minute goals
    #7 Messiah 2-0 over #24 Stevens; 6th & 74th minute goals

Wednesday Sept. 4 we have Hopkins at Messiah

Notes on games I watched via live stream

I watched a few games from Wheaton’s Bob Baptista Invitational and the Hardin-Simmons’ Invitational.
    Wheaton scores:
#RV RIT 2-0 over Hanover; #9 Wheaton 3-0 over Puget Sound; Puget Sound 3-0 over Hanover; #9 Wheaton 3-1 over #RV RIT.
    Hardin-Simmons scores:
#5 William Smith 1-0 over #10 Hardin-Simmons; Cal Lutheran 3-2 over Mary Hardin Baylor; #10 Hardin-Simmons 0-0 draw vs. Cal Lutheran; #5 William Smith 3-0 over Mary Hardin Baylor.

    William Smith vs. Hardin-Simmons
Being the blockhead that I am, I switched the stream off at 90 minutes with a 0-0 draw and went to bed, only to find out my Herons did not switch off, but indeed switched on in overtime. I liked the WS passing during the game, even though they didn’t make the creative passes to unlock the defense in the final third (forgive the cliché) – credit the H-S defense, especially their center backs. There was no audio play-by-play, only stadium sound, so I did not identify the actual players. H-S out shot WS 5-3 for the first 90. WS out shot H-S 5-0 during the first OT and scored 2 minutes into the second. I was impressed by the play of WS (left) center back Julia Berg (Fy, Charlottesville, VA) – she played with top notch poise, has an excellent left foot and a strong right foot as well.

    RIT vs. Wheaton
RIT scored first (20th min) on a very nice goal from 20 yards out by midfielder Maddy Bullis (Fy, Hillisboro, OR), assisted by forward Madison Corso (Fy, Honolulu, HI). RIT played very well and outplayed Wheaton until Wheaton scored on a scrum-type goal in the 38th minute. The momentum shifted to Wheaton and RIT got outplayed the rest of the game. Outstanding players for me were Wheaton’s outside left midfielder Aeva Graber (So, Highland Ranch, CO), forward Isabelle Oliver (Jr, Falls Church, VA), and outside right midfielder Sara Bakke(So, Minneapolis, MN). RIT players I liked were midfielder Maggie Hoey (So, Charlotte, NC), forward Christine Cataldo-Smith (Fy, Yardley, PA) and left fullback Lauren Zeglen (So, Scotia, NY).

William Smith vs. Mary Hardin Baylor was unremarkable. Cal Lutheran vs. Hardin-Simmons looked pretty even - I did not stick it out to the full 110 minute 0-0 draw - props to Cal Lutheran for coming east and stoning a top 10 team. RIT vs. Hanover was also unremarkable.

That is plenty for one post – see my review of the freshmen (first years) in my next post.

The William Smith v. Hardin Simmons game was a good one with both teams have dominate moments. WS had more possession but both teams created chances!

Hardin Simmons v. Cal Lutheran was tale of two halves as Cal Lutheran had the better of the first half and HS the better of the second but as Coach Jon said a pretty even game. Both teams had a great chance in OT to win it.

The Pomona Pitzer v. MIT game today was a good one. Two good teams playing good soccer with 15 shots a piece. PP hit the crossbar in OT.

Biggest changes in the upcoming week 1 USC poll...

WashStl will drop a few spots for their draw, but will remain in the T10.

Hopkins will climb into the T10 with their Lynchburg win.

Swarthmore will slip out of T10 with their loss to TCNJ.

    Any other movers?
