I'll go ahead and throw this here now but this team doesn't qualify for 2022. I know, I know, not quite as bold as my 50/50 prediction for 2018 (people thought I was crazy that I thought we might not actually qualify) but this prediction is a bit easier to make.

I think these next 6-12 months are some of the most important for the cycle. There is a lot of potential and a lot will be decided across the pond as our young players try and compete at a high level for the first time.
    • Players who have been overseas such as Sargent, Adams, Weah, Miazga, CCV must establish themselves as first team players in addition to Mckennie Brooks, and Pulisic staying at a high level. These 7-8 could/should be the base for 2022.
    • This current U20 group with players like Dest, Gloster, Richards, Mendez, Ledezma, and Soto have a chance to get some first team minutes for their clubs before the end of the year. Is this core also the base for the U23 Olympic team? A lot will be clearer come June 2020 with how their development is going.
    • MLS to Europe? Players like Pomykal, Mihailovic, Long, and possibly Cannon will have a decision to make before August 31 on their futures that could change their development completely.
    • The U17 World Cup is in October and we'll get to see players for 2026 and the next U20 WC. Players like Reyna (Dortmund) and Pynadath (Ajax) have already made the move but for Busio, Pepi, Bello and maybe some others this could be a great chance to secure a European move at 18.
The Gold Cup showed how much work is left to be done after a lot of promise in the U20 World Cup. For those players under 22 this is a season that could completely change the feeling about the USMNT come next summer as we prepare for qualifying.

    Players in particular who I think are key to watch;

    • Paxton Pomykal: Two key things: can he add goal production in the form of scoring or assisting to his already strong midfield play and build up skills? And can he translate it to Big 4/5 league play? Having another player join the CP/McKennie/Adams triumvirate would be huge.
    • Josh Sargent: There's not another striker in the pool with Jozy's all-around game except Sargent. He won't be able to bully players off the ball, but otherwise, he's the only guy we have that actually can help in the link up play. His development is key -- otherwise, we are relying on an aging Jozy or a striker who can only help in the box.
    • Gloster: I am not as high on Gloster as others are -- his skill level isn't as high as I'd like. But his athletic upside is there and the LB pool is an utter disaster. There are some folks younger with prospects, but Gloster seems like the only one close enough to make a likely impact
    • Timo Weah: the U20s had a ton of talent, but only two of those guys really showed strong two way skills at positions of need -- Pomykal and Weah. We need two way players -- none of these prospects are good enough offensively to not play defense. But he's the guy in the pool who can upgrade our wingers to goal dangerous if he can develop. Right now, he has the same finishing and final ball issues as Arriola and Morris ... but he's younger and has more upside.

I have updated all the player info (Rosters, Caps, etc) for the May friendlies, and the Gold Cup games, but I have not updated the minutes for the last 8 games. I also included a new column for Provisional Rosters...

Here is the link to the Google Sheet

So far GGG had 1 provisional roster, 4 camps, and 12 games since taking over.

    1 Provisonal Roster:
    (1) 40 Man Gold Cup,

    4 Camps:
    (1) Jan Camp, (2) March Friendlies, (3) May Friendlies, (4) Gold Cup Camp

    12 Rosters/Games:
    (1) Panama, (2) Costa Rica, (3) Ecuador, (4) Chile, (5) JAM, (6) VEN, (7) GUY, (8) TRI, (9) PAN, (10) CUW, (11) JAM, (12) MEX

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Rules for this pool:
    • GGG has/had to list a player on a roster or call them up to a camp
    • All info (Minutes Played, Caps, Camps etc) is accumulated from when GGG took over

Use the tabs along the bottom of the spread sheet to view player positions.

    Updated list...

    Changes:
+Added a new category to midfield to distinguish #6, #8, and #10 in the system.
    +Added Trust Rating Scale:
    *****=world class
    ****=elite international class
    ***=international class
    **=top contender class
    *=contender class (worthy of a call-up)
Note that a player has to have 3* to make it into the Trust category.

    +Add Prospect Rating Scale
    * = Their ceiling.

Note: Players who are Olympic eligible but already ready to contend for a senior spot will have two ratings.... Trust/Prospect. For instance, Paxton Pomykal has 2 stars for Trust, but is a 5 star Prospect.

Note Prospects/Not Ready for the Senior team are italicized.

Thanks for updating. I like the system as it gives us a perspective on each players ceiling. I would think two stars equals MLS/Championship/B2 level. That being said, how can someone who earns time for a UCL/Europa team get two stars?

It’s one thing to say that someone is injury prone, etc. but if they can get reasonable minutes for a major league team, they’re already shown that their ceiling/potential is above the MLS level.

Who are you talking about specifically?

I am trying out the 5 star rating system and combining it with current vs potential value; so I’m definitely open to hearing who should be ranked higher/lower and why.

Morales, Fabian and chandler are all major league talents when uninjured. Not UCL elite but Near the Europa competition spots.

If uninjured, I think about Williams having that kind of ceiling as well.

As always... I appreciate your effort and am almost perfectly aligned with your analysis... only a few add/subtract stars in your list.... nothing major. Really well done. The most glaring thing I take from you effort pertains to holding midfield (#6)... I think Adams could be the most important player on our 2022 WCQ Team... and when you look at the ratings you gave Trapp and Bradley... you have to wonder how GB could be so clueless.?.? One can only hope that he gives up on this lame hybrid idea and puts Adams where he belongs.

    Eleven Bravo,

I had a similar thought to your Trust Rating Scale, although it was more focused on ceiling.

    Maybe

    5 star = High Ceiling
    4 star = Good Ceiling
    3 star = Modest ceiling?

BTW, both our summaries show that our CM pool is seriously shallow in quality players, which makes it even crazier to move our best CM to another position when the drop-off to pool players (cuz we don't want German-Americans in the MF apparently) is immense.

Very interesting but I cannot fathom only having 5 MLS players on the roster and likely only two starting.

I’m guessing that Berhalter will triple both of those numbers.

I am afraid that is correct. But 11 Bravo's roster looks spot on, based on what we know now. Of course, things are almost certain to change, with the likely exception of the current pro-MLS bias.

This will be an exciting start to the European season. A lot of youngsters up for increased minutes. Weah and Sargent look like they will have a chance to be a starter. Gloster and Soto are solidly in the first team now. Little Gio Reyna might even have a chance to put his foot in the door this year.

I am really excited about this list. We've got a lot of players 4 stars or above and the development pipeline is full of exciting prospects. Now if we can get our coach to look more broadly at this list instead of thinking that the vast majority of the pool must be from MLS, we just may have something.....

    5 star / World Class / Top 32 team

    • Pulisic/Chelsea (7)
    • Adams/RB Leipzig (14)
    • Pierie/Ajax (15)
    4 star / Major League / Top 100 team
    • Chandler/Eintracht (37)
    • FJ/Gladbach (41)
    • Brooks/Wolfsburg (45)
    • Yedlin/Newcastle (48)
    • Sargent/Werder Bremen (50)
    • Horvath/Brugge (55)
    • Weah/Lille (57)
    • McKennie/Schalke (61)
    • Ream/Fulham (74, wut?)
    • Morales/Fortuna Düsseldorf (88)
    • Steffen/Fortuna Düsseldorf (88)
    • Tyler Boyd/Beşiktaş (98)
    3 star / AAA Level (Top 200)
    • Siebatcheau/Rennes (119)
    • Gall/Malmo (167)
    • Holmes/Derby County (178)
    AA Level (Top 400~MLS)
    • Cameron/QPR (209)
    • Lichaj/Hull City (224)
    • Amon/FC Nordsjælland (234)
    • Wood/Hannover (240)
    • Soto/Hannover (240)
    • Alvarado/Necaxa (251)
    • Robinson/Wigan (253)
    • Palmer-Brown/Austria Vienna (272)
    • Klinsmann/St. Gallen (301)
    • Gooch/Sunderland (302)
    • Miazga/Reading (310)
    • Novakovich/Reading (310)
    • Wright/VVV-Venlo (348)
    • Diskerud/Ulsan Hyundai (NR)
    A Level Top 600 (Yikes)
    • Moore/Tenerife (428)
    • Sabbi/Hobro IK (433)
    • Green/Greuther Fürth (477)
Arguments can be made in how to slot these players relative to the list above.

    World Class Irregular/Reserve/Injured
    • Richards/Bayern Munich (2)
    • Reyna/Dortmund (9)
    • Dest/Ajax (15)
    • Mendez/Ajax (15)
    • Carter-Vickers/Tottenham (9)
    Major League Irregular/Reserve/Injured
    • Akale/Villareal (42)
    • Llanez/Wolfburg (45)
    • Ledesma/PSV (46)
    • Gloster/PSV (46)
    • de la Torre/Fulham (78)
    AAA Irregular/Reserve/Injured
    • Williams
    • Polster/Rangers FC (125)
    AA Reserve/Injured
    • Tillman/FC Nürnberg (208)
    • AronJo/Hammersby (231)
    • Corona/Tijuana (248)
    A Level Top 600 (Yikes)
    • Kevin Lankford/St. Pauli (426)

club rank by 538 [exact ranking doesn't really matter but broadly works]

Green = potential to rise to higher level
Red = risk of falling to a lower level or getting benched
Italics = American born/raised outside of the US, whose USMNT success apparently indicates that the US' "developmental system fails to produce good players"

Nice work! Based on this, MLS has received 69% of all minutes played so far. Some of that is due to Camp Cupcake, injuries and U-2x qualifying but c'mon. Look at the list of players on this posts 287 and 293 and defend almost 70%. Going forward, I think the number should be at most 25% but I believe that Berhalter will have a minimum of 5-6 starters and the 60%+ of the pool from MLS. I hope I'm wrong.

Thanks for posting this. You put a lot of time and effort into it.

The main quibble I would have would be that Paxton Pomykal is not a #10, he's more of a #8/#6 blend. I'd say that he'd immediately fit into the #8 list above Roldan and behind McKennie.

I'd venture to say that a rating system based on game impact may be a good tool. Which players impact the game positively? In what way? Which players are anonymous? Which players impact the game negatively?

I think Paxton fits best in McKennie's role -- right where you said. But I'm not sure he's an international six because of size, and I think he ends up better attacking than he's showing in Dallas.

the biggest issue with the list is the numbers are used by fans this just isn't the way the game works anymore.

    the entire he is a 6...no he is an 8...oh no he's a 8/6 hybrid....no he's a 10 playing an 8...is all crazy.

teams have to adapt way too much tactically over the course of the match to think lineups are done like this and its especially true when you look at a national team.
