Crap. Didn't post my edit. Anyway... https://www.csmonitor.com/Commentary/the-monitors-view Here is the CSM's current editorial page. It's pretty different from the Wall Street Journal.
From what I have seen, they embellish just about always. They sensationalize. But I'm not talking about what the media does which is left leaning, I'm talking (in general) about what we, as a whole, are doing here. We can do better about what we post and how we post. Agreed. And I think that chart is going to need an update as I think CNN has moved right (as we have discussed). But the problem is that we are not be as careful as we should be. We are posting one liners, tweets (in multiple threads, not just the dedicate thread) with some kind of pithy remark which might or might not have a link to one of the more reliable sources (form the chart). We used to be better at that, but have got into a self-reinforcing cycle of approving our own views without critically thinking about them too much. I don't read them other than what is posted here, but they way they aggregate, they are sensational. I'm not chastising the poster. I'm not being passive-aggressive. I'm saying rawstory is shit (which is obviously my opinion). I don't know how they are now (I have avoided them for a few years), but their environmental reporting used to be excellent. And they used to have some of the best data display I saw, on environmental reporting.
Just an FYI: I think the Ad Fontes bias chart you guys are looking at is an older version. She's been updating the methodology a bit and has broken out shows within the networks as well. I believe she's also working on differentiating between op/ed and regular news for print journalism. The new chart: https://www.adfontesmedia.com/ Down below you can find breakouts for CNN, Fox, MSNBC, etc. programs. Anything below the Daily Signal/Washington Monthly line on the updated chart I posted is complete garbage. Except Wonkette. They were rated poorly due to the sarcastic tone rather than content. There was a big fight over their rating. I don't consider them a news service, but an entertaining read that can lead to me checking out other stories on topics they cover.
I've been chasing my kids too much and haven't been posting much here. Apologies if this has already been posted, but have any of you seen the latest Trump "opinion poll"? I didn't think this was real at first. It's like a twitter rant in public opinion poll form. https://www.donaldjtrump.com/landin...K4-SK-zzOGkrz-0uihM0UXpTtKlUkyMZz-ssYHmYUN6PU
It's still a bit odd. If the New Republic gets into "hyper-parisan left" territoty, that's a change from when I used to read it, when it was old skool liberal on domestic matters, and neo-con hawkish on foreign affairs. Reason is out there with National Review on a few issues regarding, say, the size of government and regulations, etc. but in terms of drugs, abortion, and law enforcement issues, they're with most of the "skews left" sources. For example... https://reason.com/2019/07/11/flori...sted-after-planting-drugs-on-innocent-people/ A former Florida sheriff's deputy was arrested Wednesday for planting drugs and falsely arresting at least 10 people, including one case where Reason obtained body camera footage showing him lying about the results of roadside field test. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) announced yesterday that, following a months-long investigation, former Jackson County sheriff's deputy Zach Wester had been arrested and charged with 52 felony crimes, including racketeering, false imprisonment, fabricating evidence, and drug possession. Unless he's planting drugs on suburban frat boys from the right prep schools, the National Review won't be covering this.
At least back the day, The New Republic was highly respectable. You might not share its views, but its articles were carefully researched and sourced. And its views weren't always orthodox lefty, either. Either TNR has declined hugely, or that chart has a whopping big error.
She's covers Reason a bit in her FAQ. I'm not exactly thrilled with her answer, but I get it. I think overwhelmingly being socially permissive + economically permissive in aggregate leads to policies that do a far better job of aligning with conservative politics in aggregate. When we "let the market" handle everything, the overall direction of policy is not centrist or liberal/progressive. TNR on the chart posted to this thread is definitely a typo on the vertical axis. Don't know if it was a true typo or based upon the sample of articles they surveyed up to that point in time. On the latest chart I linked to, it is quite credible/high quality. Left, but deemed to be very good.
Damn, are these guys twisted.... 1149326757230551042 is not a valid tweet id 1149357587571154945 is not a valid tweet id
Good call https://www.adfontesmedia.com/faq/ RE: Reason Magazine: Reason is a pretty unapologetically libertarian publication. I know libertarians like to think of themselves as centrists because of the whole “socially liberal/fiscally conservative” policy positions, but there’s pretty broad consensus among Democrats and Republicans that Libertarians’ governing policies align with Republicans more than Democrats. This consensus, I believe, has arisen because any Libertarian-friendly politicians in elected positions (there aren’t many, but, for example, Ron and Rand Paul) typically identify as or caucus with Republicans. Also, Libertarians in government tend to not be super interested in implementing new laws (less government!) that would actually protect or advance progressive policies. I believe this is why liberals/progressives/Democrats tend to not vote for Libertarians, while some Republicans do. But notice that I don’t have Reason ranked as the most conservative (left-to-right) publication. And if I ranked individual articles on there, there would certainly be some that would rank farther to the left because of the particular political issue being discussed.
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news...y-alexander-acosta-sex-trafficking-budget-cut Alexander Acosta, the US labor secretary under fire for having granted Jeffrey Epstein immunity from federal prosecution in 2008, after the billionaire was investigated for having run a child sex trafficking ring, is proposing 80% funding cuts for the government agency that combats child sex trafficking. Acosta’s plan to slash funding of a critical federal agency in the fight against the sexual exploitation of children is contained in his financial plans for the Department of Labor for fiscal year 2020. In it, he proposes decimating the resources of a section of his own department known as the International Labor Affairs Bureau (ILAB). The bureau’s budget would fall from $68m last year to just $18.5m. The proposed reduction is so drastic that experts say it would effectively kill off many federal efforts to curb sex trafficking and put the lives of large numbers of children at risk. That was brought up yesterday on Fresh Air or Hear and Now or Politics Podcast that brought up this exact point - he is now in the position to which oversees child trafficking, and nobody is talking about it.
Did JFK come back and arrest a bunch of pedophile politicians on the 4th? I wasn't on the Mall so I might have missed it.
Nice Soviet style to this Trump press conference. Despite being a hand-picked favorable audience, they still have no idea what he's talking about, and so they have to guess whether they should laugh, applaud, or nod in silence and they're terrified of getting it wrong.— Max Kennerly (@MaxKennerly) July 11, 2019 None of the networks showed the social media events. The video comes straight from the White House. His speaking makes no sense. The videos are bad. In a related event, Gorka or someone went at press covering the event afterward. Nothing makes sense.
00111 Here and Now, most likely. I think Fresh Air was about the new Yiddish priduction of Fiddler on the Roof
But, 43.7% of registered or likely voters. The thing is, It is a probably a pretty solid base. Maybe the Dems have a similar solid base and the fight will be over last 12-13% (I think Mitt Romney got roasted for saying something like this when he ran). Trick for Dems is winning the centrists while not alienating progressives to the point they vote 3rd party. If economy somehow keeps rolling, it is going to be tough. Gorka! Has there ever been a bigger buffoon involved in the executive branch/White House than him? Should be a slam dunk but this administration can roll out surprisingly stiff competition.
JFK Jr, not JFK. JFK is dead - obviously it couldn't be him. Please, try to keep your conspiracy theory characters straight.
To her credit she also acknowledges that her bias does play a part in the chart according to her FAQ. As Chicago76 pointed out, she is also working on her methodology to avert some of bias. I don't think anything on the chart is vastly off where many of those outlets really are.
All in all, I agree. But Reason tends to be a lot less hysterical on some {EDIT: most} issues than other sources in that neighborhood. Idiocy among woke college students for example: Reason will cover it, but won't extrapolate with several paragraphs on how one particular incident shows how the looney left professoriate is destroying civilization. There higher ed guy keeps it in perspective And I'll have to track down the New Republic to see if it's that lefty...
