I haven't been able to watch at all, so have shown less interest in this tournament than usual. But it's another continental champions, VAR is coming in the QFs, and assignments give us a window into who is ranked where heading into WC22. Not sure how many are able to watch, so this could be a low-traffic thread other than highlights, but hopefully still worth it

By the way, by my count there were three red cards in the group stage.

A 2CT at 2:24 here (Grisha is referee) that probably could have been SFP, but good for giving the reckless UB on a penalty:

A DOGSO foul at 0:23 here (El Jaafari referee):

Then we have this at 2:01 (Essrayri referee), which I can only surmise is a 2CT with the second caution given for delaying the restart:

Something strange happened to result in a 2CT to a Benin player in extra time:

I don’t have more context right now, but looks like dissent during the assessment of an injury to a teammate. Nothing apparently publicly provocative, so I’m very intrigued to see if we will learn the details.

There’s online speculation that the player was playing with jewelry after being warned. If that’s true, that’s spectacular.

Anyone able to watch Madagascar v DR Congo?

Fifty-six fouls over 120 minutes. Only three cautions.

Foul count was 40-16. DR Congo fouled more by over two-to-one. Yet possessed the ball more and had 12 corners, to Madagascar’s four.

    The statistics are almost unbelievable.

I watched the first half and a bit of the second, at about 30-40 minutes in (rough guess) they showed that there were 12 fouls by DRC and 4 by Madagascar, although the latter had had 60 % possession. After that point DRC tended to have more possession until I stopped watching at about 60 minutes. The game didn’t seem rough and the CR didn’t seem to be super strict with his foul threshold (one YC was a correct SPA), but I wasn’t paying that close attention to the referee, tbf.

VARs are Van Boekel (NED) and Benoit (FRA), respectively.

VAR training is going really well globally, huh? It’s almost like this should still be an experiment and working up toward continental and global use. So strange.

    Semifinals
Senegal : Tunisia - TESSEMA WEYESA (ETH)
Algeria : Nigeria - GASSAMA (GAM)

Millot and van Boekel are VARs, respectively... again. Gassama did get to be VAR on Cote d'Ivoire-Algeria, but right now that's 5 out of 6 UEFA VARs for these matches.

I would guess Sikazwe for the Final. He and Ghorbal seem like the two best African referees to me right now and Ghorbal can't do it. Sikazwe is still there and, politically, I imagine an official from his region is where CAF would look toward anyway, given the four teams that have advanced.

Some very interesting stuff from the Senegal-Tunisia semifinal, all in the video highlights below:

Chronologically, you start with the first penalty. I think this is a good call and yellow card for the handball offence, given the text of the new Laws. That said, does anyone else think there was offside in the build-up to the penalty. Watch the player who backheels the ball from the goal line. Was he ahead of the ball at the moment it was last played? It's a very tricky situation and one has to hope the VAR noticed it and got it right. I've watched it several times from this admittedly bad angle and I think "no offside" is the right call. But I'd love a better look.

Second penalty looked like nothing to me initially and maybe even a handball offence and/or dive by the attacker. Got to say, on replay it is a spectacularly good call by the referee.

Then the third penalty incident. Wonderful use of VAR to overturn what is absolutely clear ball-to-hand contact but also not a violation per the LOTG. Tobar, the Copa America Final referee, could learn a lesson here. Also interesting to hear the audio from the RRA.

So this is a real article, quoting the South Africa equivalent of USSF praising the appointment:

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.go...r-afcon-2019-final/133i3ecsknt4f13kddzpr6ovrw

There are about a dozen like that.

Problem is, it looks like he wasn’t actually appointed. New accounts are now saying ALIOUM (CMR) has the match.

    CAF is something else.

Gomes was NEVER appointed internally or otherwise to the game, it was always Alioum who was to handle the final. Quite incredible that SAFA even wrote a post about Gomes getting the Final, with a quote from head of refereeing there! But this time I don't believe it's CAF's fault. Btw, Gomes is a strong manager (very strong for CAF who lack in this area) and has quite good chances to attend WC 2022 at least for my taste.

Alioum's final designation is as unsurprising as it is disappointing; he officiated three games without bigger problems, all of which were very easy. This formulates sth of a comeback for the Cameroonian who missed WC 2018 and didn't get ANY game in the recent knockout stages of both CAF Champions League or Confederation Cup (essentially CL / EL).

Alioum never changed and I imagine he never will, no charisma or management, he just handles his games to avoid trouble (and clear YCs). Gomes, Tessema (before his disappointing SF game), Otogo-Castane, Camille, Jiyed all would have been better options; after his QF, Ethiopian should have been front of them. I cannot understand what anyone ever saw in Alioum, with all the respect, but he is the one laughing who will handle AFCON final tomorrow.

This AFCON got the final referee that the officiating in the competition deserved, I think it's best said like that.

If anyone has any questions about what happened in this AFCON (I watched every KO game and some group matches here and there) feel free to ask.

Worse than I thought. The CAF comms department announced the wrong appointment with no authority to do so. This wasn’t a press screw up.
