Folks with the recent trolling additions to this thread it would be well to remember the scene from the original "True Grit" where LaBoeuf says to Mattie after she refused to continue an argument with a drunk Rooster: "That's real smart. You've done nothing when you've bested a fool."
So wishing a career-ending injury is... non-violent? You're imagining a gentle cessation of function for one of her body parts?
Ali Krieger was on CNN this morning. For those that cannot view CNN from their country, she basically just repeated what she put out on twitter in response to 45's tweets on Megan Rapinoe and stated she won't attend a White House visit if invited but she would gladly accept an invitation to Congress. It was awkward when the female journalist asked her if she's going to be in the starting 11 on Sunday.
A couple of thoughts re: Rapinoe 1. As a captain, she needs to keep the team laser focused on the task at hand. Epic fail. I don't know the team members personally, but I'm guessing that at least some of them have conservative political beliefs. At least half of America does. Why do this to YOUR TEAM? 2. As a national performer, she should want to have the support of the public at large. Not just half the public. 3. At a time when these ladies are seeking to get equal pay, why spit on half the paying public. Why make it even a little hard for all Americans to cheer for you? SMH
Yeh, Rapinoe has done a terrible job keeping the team laser focused on the task at hand. That's why they've been doing so poorly at the World Cup, winning only six of their six games. Rapinoe has been speaking out for years against sexism, racism, homophobia, and the bigoted thug in the White House. Yes, some people in the U.S. find that difficult to cope with. They prefer that the unjust status quo continue. They believe in "freedom" except when it includes free speech that they don't like. GO MEGAN.
Bob, I love how you paint with wide swaths. The fact that the distraction created by Megan and flamed by the President, has not resulted in a loss, does not therefore justify the behavior on either's part. If we are being honest, the USA team could be split in two and be 2 of the top 5 teams there. The great percentage of Conservatives are not racists, bigots, homophobes, islamophobes, etc. The great percentage of Liberals are not knee jerk haters of all things conservative, ANTIFA thugs and do not support born alive abortions being left to die. I believe that ~10% on the far left and 10% on the far right are truly reprehensible in their own ways. I love Women's national team soccer and hope that they not only win the WWC, but achieve rational pay based on attendance, TV viewership and advertisers.
This is a disease that, unfortunately, most of the loudest voices on each side suffers quite badly from.
There's not the slightest evidence that Megan Rapinoe's courageous activism has distracted anyone on the U.S. team. It is clear, however, that her comments and protests have distracted YOU and various fans. I don't view that as a serious problem.
They just happen to be ok with those things because they feel they don't effect them. Rapinoe has a problem with that now. She has stumbled along the way, but she is doing her best to look out for all people and bring attention to things some are not comfortable confronting. Conservatives like Martin Luther King now so here's something from him. It's a privileged position to pretend politics don't exist in sports or the workplace or life in general. I can't leave my skin at the door when I leave the house. //there's no such thing as an abortion after delivery. That's not how that works....
I'm more or less inclined to agree, here, but something gave me pause yesterday (and since anecdotes are apparently indicative of something according to some posters here): a guy I work with who is super-anti-Trump and loves everything about how Rapinoe has gone back at him came to me for our daily discussion about the tournament and apropos of very little drew a conclusion from an answer Morgan gave about what I imagine is to her is an interminable question about Rapinoe's and Trump's tweeting and the benching. His conclusion was that Rapinoe may have been causing some chemistry issues. He repeatedly returned to the theme despite my skepticism (I had heard little of the same except some of the more insane posters' wild speculations here). This is a guy who loves women's soccer, but is not really immersed in the culture of the game. My thought is that he was spending too much time on Twitter period, but it was definitely notable.
I'm not against anyone posting anecdotal evidence, though it's hard to evaluate how representative it is. But here we're getting your report of your friend's conclusion based on a comment by Alex Morgan that he heard. Can we get the actual quote from Morgan and draw our own conclusions?
Ok. Irrelevant talking points, policing grammar for a post I made on my phone, and the poster does not know how to use quote tags. We know what this is.
It's absolutely true that in the 1960s many Republicans supported controversial civil rights bills while Southern Democrats stopped them with filibusters as much as possible. That was 50-60 years ago. Since then, beginning with Richard Nixon's 1968 "Southern strategy," lots of white bigots in the South and other parts of the U.S. have moved to the Republican Party. Lots of terrific moderate Republicans have left that party. This isn't exactly a secret.
