True. I remember when Hope Solo did one right after losing to Sweden and calling them "cowards" for their tactics. She changed her tone later that day, but the damage had been done.

She has been immense--and so has Van Lunteren, who has been a beast on the right side. She had a HUGE game today--easily my player of the match.

Yeah. The set up and timing for these interviews creates unnecessary issues like that. Can’t really blame any players because feelings are either ecstatic or depressed. It just feels wrong.

Yeah, some personalities really do not suit an instant or forced upon interview. I think I would be awful at it :ninja:

Martens was interviewed after the match and said her toe was in very bad shape today unlike the previous match. I would mark her doubtful for Sunday.

After UVa lost to UMBC (1st 1 seed to lose to a 16) one reporter asked Ty Jerome if he was aware of the significance of the loss. Jerome answered sarcastically, "Yeah, thanks for bringing that up."

I think we got a bit lucky on this one. Should have been a penalty for Sweden

That was some goold old-fashion football fight. Both teams grinding and could have gone either way. Really nice shot on goal. The Usa should not take the Netherlands lightly, as certain things just seem to go the Oranje way:whistling:

I am certain that the players and coaches won't, and this fan will not either.

For those not versed in Swedish, here's the translation (from Google):

National team doctor Houman Ebrahimi says that CT and MRI have been performed in the hospital and that the preliminary response does not show any signs of more serious damage

OK, I finally found it, but I was wrong about the player it was a foul on Hurtig:

Sweden attack at pace but the Dutch defence wins the ball with a slide tackle in the box. Although.... the replay has just shown that the tackle on Hurtig was probably a foul. She doesn't take any of the ball and fully wipes out the forward - if the penalty Scotland conceded to Argentina was a foul, there is no way this wasn't a penalty too.

How was this not reviewed and called a PK?

I just did the same look, it was at 66:15

They showed two different views after the ball went back down to the Swedish end of the field, van Lunteren missed the ball completely and dropped the attacker about 10m inside the Netherlands penalty area.

I thought the point of VAR was clear and obvious errors and I'd like to know in what universe that is not a PK.

Kudos to the Netherlands they are a quality side and worthy victor, but a converted PK and Sweden bunkers and has a good chance of riding out the match.

Eh...I don't know what the rule of the law is, but that contact is entirely initiated by the Swedish attacker. The Dutch player goes to play the ball and the Swedish player steps away from her normal stride and into the Dutch player. I think she was trying to shield the ball but was actually behind van Lunteren at that point.

So again, I don't know how that would have been interpreted by the ref (aside from her not believing it was a foul in realtime), and what angles there are, but it looks more like a foul on the attacker to me to prevent a clean tackle.

And very importantly the world found out today that Netherlands can win even without an Oranje Parade. Scary to contemplate.

Van Lunteren made 3 or 4 similar tackles earlier and they were clean, textbook tackles. It looks like she went to the well once too often but I wonder if the referee was conditioned at this point to think it was another clean tackle from van Lunteren

No. Just no. Watch van Lunteren's earlier tackles and you'll see the difference between clean tackles and this one. In the other tackles, van Lunteren has the 1/2 step or so in order to get her legs entirely in front of the Swedish attacker's legs and blocks the ball. Beautiful tackles. This is a foul and a PK all the way. On the US broadcast, Danielle Slaton at first thought this was another good tackle, but on the replay she took it back, noting the difference

I disagree: Van Lunteren misses the ball, yes--but only because the Swedish player throws her lower body/left leg into Van Lunteren's leg. As I see it, watch closely, the first contact is made by the Swede--she is moving left into the Dutch player as much if not more so than the Dutch player is moving into her--and so I think it a good no call.

Hurtig movement is very subtle, whereas Van Lunteren is initiating the attack, going hard for / towards the ball. It's all on V.L. if she misses the ball and hits the opposing player. This is a PK all day long IMO.

Please. An attacker is obliged to stop her running?

Mind you, I'm usually in the minority on the Referee Forum, but I don't think this is even worth taking there.

The thing is she doesn't 'miss the ball' the attacker moves into her after the tackle is already underway. You can clearly see it from the head on angle where Hurtig changes her stride to try and move to the side; all of the contact is initiated by Hurtig, not van Lunteren, as she is going in a straight line to the ball. If anything I would say it's a foul by Hurtig for barging into the defender as she attempts to go for the ball.
