That's just Sauerbrunn. She could have made an early professional foul against Spain on the bad pass from Naeher once she had a bad first touch and taken a yellow (wouldn't be DOGSO if she fouled right away), but she didn't. 1) Everyone does this. Everyone has been doing this for a long time. Everyone will continue doing it until refs start giving out yellows. 3) Everyone does this. Everyone has been doing this for a long time. I have no problem with the English having a problem w/ Morgan's celebration. It was pretty in-your-face. But, for me, I thought it was pretty funny. We're always going to see things differently when you're on the opposite side of the vs.. I mean, they probably don't think White is a diver who works the refs incessently.
Her kill it dead settle and perfectly weighted pass on a 45 yard diagonal ball, a yard from the touchline was unreal. I've been thinking about that play anticipating the men's game tonight, and imagining how for that pass would've bounced from Zardes, for example.
I looked it up. The Seattle Yannigans were a minor league team in the short lived New Pacific League in 1896. They came in last place and the team and league folded.
Both France and England were better in the second half. England puts the PK away and there is a good chance that we would be out of the WC as England looked more fit and had advantage. So, yes, they have started off well and got the early lead and took less risk, but a good team will eventually come back and take advantage of the US sitting back...
Does that mean when the new Neville Rankings come out next year she may be just the second best player in the Universe?
The NFL jumps to Alex Morgan's defense: Piers is fancy when he smokes his dope.— Kenny Stills (@KSTiLLS) July 3, 2019
Nope, I'll criticise even my team if they show similar behaviour. Both legitimate critique? What the hell is wrong with tea?
Interesting. Why would we have to wait until England to tie before the "swarm" arrived? It's the frigging semi-finals. Sigh...
I remember someone shooting guns as a sort of celebration in soccer, but this was many years ago. In the United States men's landmark victory over Trinidad in 1989, a Trinidad shot at a tying goal late in the game went wide by five feet or more. As it was nearing the end line, clearly way wide, the goalkeeper (Tony Meola), shot a couple of pretend guns at the ball. Even back then, I was sort of surprised by it.
I don't think we have an explanation from anyone who actually knows yet what Morgan's "celebration" meant, but I have a different take: A lot of the critiques of the team's and players' attitudes, I think, can be well described as rooted in, "But you aren't behaving like proper ladies!" So, Alex scores her goal and then acts like a proper lady, drinking team with her pinky up. It would the right in line with Lloyd's golf clap. Sweet, but "up yours ...."
I didn't think the tea sipping celebration had anything to do with the Boston Tea Party or the British tea tradition, although those were nice double meanings, but was a reference to the slang of "sipping tea," with its related "Kermit sipping tea" memes. That was my first impression, especially considering all of the negative press the team has gotten. EDIT to add: Her quote afterwards kind of confirmed to me that impression, "I feel like this team has had so much thrown at them and us. I feel like we didn't take an easy route through this tournament and 'that's the tea.'" And that's the tea.
