ORANJE!!!!! Dutch have the best MF and if they can shield their back line they can give the US difficulty. Mediema is the best striker in the tournament from a technical point. Martens has to retain fitness and van de Sanden get out the rut she is in. That being said, they need to beat Sweden tomorrow which will be a difficult game.

  5. I posted the perfect game plan in the Orange-Sweden game thread:

The simple solution is just to deliver the ball into the box as if any ball we have is a set piece. So as soon as we get the ball half way the Swedish half on the side, just pump in the ball and make sure our headers are there.
When we make it close to the back line my message is donot try to dribble into the box, but make the pass in it as fast as possible.
If we do that in the first 30 minutes with 20+ crosses into the box, it's bound to go wrong for the Swedes.
The plus of this approach it doesnot ask for pressing as the Swedes MO isnot keeping the ball in possession but when having it make a run. So concentrated control of the space from about half the Swedish part is essential.
Van Veenendaal also has to adopt the Japan's goalie sweeper like style of coming out to kill passes through.

Once the US had the lead, they would try to kill time, delay tactic...and it is normal in the soccer. Somehow I don't like VAR when it is offside by a toe or a hair and a finger/hand, I feel like a goal should have been given instead but rule is rule. The US team is on a mission as they badly want to repeat and reclaim the top after losing the Olympic semi final in Rio. Anyway, they are very strong. The opponent should try to exploit the space between the central defenders. Had England is able to tie 2-2, the US may be rattled a bit (see Japan when they upset US in the final by coming back twice and then won with PK) where perhaps they can be beaten by PK.
Against Sweden, I hope Netherlands can win in regular or extra time. Sweden is good defensive, clinical to convert their chances, goalkeeper is good with PK but if Netherlands play at their best, they should be able to win. The extreme weather may be a factor, reminding me of 2014 WC with water break for men, and then we will see 2022 WC in winter time at Qatar for a horrendous FIFA's decision..

  7. At least this time the match is in the evening, so far cooler than that 34 Celcius against Italy.

  11. They learned from the Japan match and showed it in the Italy match they can contain themselves and if necesary play boring to save energy.

Yes, and Martens doesn't seem to have any explosive speed. I wonder if the foot problem is worse than we think.

It will come down to 1 or 2 mistakes. The pass is not good, midfield looks nervous with passing back, and the players are almost a straight line when having the ball so not enough forward passing. The midfields are not good today with not enough service to the forwards. No more passing so just long ball. Sweden still looks more dangerous.

What a strike by number 14 to take the lead in extra time after the wood work hit each side in regular time!

I thought the game was fairly even, but we were better in ET.

We're not gonna beat the USA. But its nice the ladies made it this far

They fought hard and now have a shot at winning WC. 3 questions:
    1. Will fitness a concert (US one extra day rest, extra time vs Sweden; Martens and Veenendaal's fingers which Martens seems to be a concern if she can only play 45 min, Veenedaal will tape the fingers if she needs to)?
    2. Can Netherlands sustain early pressure from the US in early 1st half or early 2nd half? US has scored in the first 12 min in each game this WC
    3. Can the women win the WC (which the men failed 3 times to do) or will the women follow the men, bridesmaid but not the bride?

Congratulations to the women in orange getting to the final. Such a good job!
The odds aren't really good against the US who seem more composed, not to mention an extra day off and no extra-time.

Btw, how the **** did van de Sanden miss that last opportunity?!

The nice thing about Ornaje women's team is that they can win a game even when they are not the better team on the pitch. Something Oranje men are not really good at :D!

  21. She should have cut it back to Miedema.

It was a tight game as I thought it would be. Dutch defense for the most part did a good job and van Venendaal was strong in the goal, didn't make the usual one mistake per match. Playing an overtime match was not the best approach to get to the finals but those were the cards that were dealt. Martens was just interviewed on US television and said her toe was really bad today which is why she could not play in the 2nd half. She hopes to be ready on Sunday.

I'm pretty sick of all the US television commenters (I watch all the games on the Spanish channel where they are not so biased). They are all talking about how a win on Sunday is certain. I guess I shouldn't expect anything else. The people posting over on the match thread here on Big Soccer are not any better.

Major props to the Dutch for getting this far. They will have to play the game on Sunday regardless of what the odds are. Weigman is such a good trainer and she will figure things out.

  23. The thing with this bunch is, if they can win gracefully playing they do, but if it's hard they can and will go into tug and pull it over the finish line mode.
The medical staff should put loads of ice on the legs to minimize the stress reactions tonight.

van Dongen was just interviewed and said that if the Dutch win on Sunday it will be the biggest upset ever. She's probably right about that.:D I was glad that she played so strong in the extra time periods as she was very poor during regular time. I think Bloodworth knows this and won't pass to her.

I saw the BBC punditry. They were a disgrace. They explicitly said England is miles better.

Thereby completely forgetting England losing 3-0 in the semis vs Holland two years ago, and Sweden their record against USA (the best of any team this century).

"No Dutch player is good enough for the USA squad", one of them said.
