I"m not surprised, most of those Trumpet Americans had ancestors from the confederate states that seceded from the union to fight for states rights so they can continue to own slaves and treat humans like property and when they didn't get their way, they developed the Ku Klux Klan to instill fear in America that freed slaves were going to ruin the human race and "dirty up" the white populations. In my eyes, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, they aren't any more American than their confederate family members were. I'm not surprised they sided with England in this one.
Tens of thousands. My best friend (who is a sports fan but not a regular follower of women's soccer) told me a month ago that he would not be watching any of the World Cup games this year because of Rapinoe's "antics". And that he would be rooting against the USA. Well, the play of our team (and Rapinoe's play specifically) has won him over to the point that he's been sending me tongue-in-cheek texts over the past week talking about how "my girls" would do against Spain, and France, and England. He's had his computer at work set to play the stream, and hasn't missed a minute of play since the Sweden game.
Well, he is to me... Anyway, just look at all the comments on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, etc... There are a lot of "Americans" rooting against these girls in the name of their Fuhrer.
Sure, but that's not what you asked. The reason he tweeted at her was because of what she said in the interview about not visiting the WH. Granted he added in other things he didn't like, but if the interview had not popped up, he probably wouldn't have even taken notice of her (or the team) - unfortunately. Nah, wasn't trying to be "cool" . At least not a "cool" as you bro. I wanted to use something easily well known, a reference that "anybody" would be able to get. Seemed to work just fine.
Where are you seeing this? I know a few Trump supporters, but none of them are rooting against USWNT??? Half of them probably don't even know the WC is happening or who Rapinoe is. I've seen people talking about "Trump supporters" rooting against the USWNT, but I've yet to see any "Trump supporters" actually do that.
While mostly true, we sadly live in a world now where those social media handles are now suspect to bots and foreign fake accounts disguised as "American" handles. I wouldn't instantly assume these are legitimates talking trash is what I'm saying although what it does in fact do is manipulate people into believing theres a backlash and therefore actively engage in said backlash themselves, if you understand what I mean. It is in fact this type of manipulation that keeps our country very polarized, angry, and wanting to attack the other side. It's a societal disruption in our progress that excites a country such as Russia to keep meddling and trolling in our politics through social media and other mediums. Anyway, I think I got lost and forgot I was on BigSoccer, GO USA!
No Russians are required to manipulate people into shitposting on platforms specifically designed for shallowness and soundbites. YouTube was a pile of human filth before 2015. Twitter was a hot-take mess before 2015. Facebook was a vapid meme vehicle before 2015. Apparently, these things also enable conspiratorial thinking and turn attention and sense of history and time to mush.
I'm glad you're not seeing what I'm seeing, but I've seen a TON on it in online comments on publications like the Daily Mail (weird to see so many right wing Americans commenting there). https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...an-stars-arrogant-France-backing-England.html (Scroll down the comments and select "best rated" and check out all the Americans vocally opposing this team.) Rapinoe has become a convenient target on Fox, Daily Caller, etc. They've riled up their rapid base.
Going to the DailyMail website and comments section is like passing by a train wreck. It's a conservative website so I guess I kinda get the right-wing Americans always on it praising Trump and bashing everyone else but it's still the weirdest thing to me. It's like there's two separate United States, the liberal country and the conservative country and the conservatives are more than happy to flock to other countries if it means bashing liberal Americans, even if we are all the same nationality. So weird and sad at the same time. Fox News is of course a joke and it's no surprise they went after Rapinoe as seen in this clip:
What bothers me the most about these 'patriotic' folks, including the current president, is that they seem to put patriotism above the constitution and the Fox News clip is the perfect example. "They represent ALL of us." Exactly what do they mean by 'ALL' and where are they in counting LGBTQ folks, minorities, etc. as part of 'ALL' of us? Where does free speech fit into this, separation of church and state, balance of power, etc.?
"Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel" Samuel Johnson "Banging your head against a wall can burn up to 150 calories per hour." "When I was a boy I was told that anybody could become President. Now I'm beginning to believe it." Clarence Darrow "The problem with this world is that the stupid are so sure and the wise so full of doubts." Bertrand Russell "What luck for rulers that men do not think." Adolf Hitler "Freedom is the right to be wrong, not the right to do wrong." John Diefenbaker "Life is a sexually transmitted disease and the mortality rate is one hundred percent." R. D. Laing
Thanks for posting this great video. I love the Fox host's reference to "communist Japan." And they're against athletes speaking out on political issues--except when they can find a right-wing athlete to speak out!
How does the Daily ********ing Mail turn into an accurate representation of American sentiment? What is wrong with you people?
You forgot one of my favorites: (usually attributed to Sinclair Lewis, but that's not accurate) “When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross”
I probably forgot a LOT more but I just was intending to throw out a few that might encourage some thought. I also left out: "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent." Isaac Asimov "Being ignorant is not so much a shame, as being unwilling to learn." Benjamin Franklin "Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside a dog it's too dark to read." Groucho Marx "To ignore the facts does not change the facts." "Always forgive your enemies - nothing annoys them so much." Oscar Wilde “Because today we live in a society in which spurious realities are manufactured by the media, by governments, by big corporations, by religious groups, political groups... So I ask, in my writing, What is real? Because unceasingly we are bombarded with pseudo-realities manufactured by very sophisticated people using very sophisticated electronic mechanisms. I do not distrust their motives; I distrust their power. They have a lot of it. And it is an astonishing power: that of creating whole universes, universes of the mind. I ought to know. I do the same thing.” Philip K. Dick And many many others that are at least partially appropriate for this thread.
One of the facilities guys at my job who prefers OAN because FOX News is too biased was telling a contracted plumber (basically a stranger) how much he doesn't like the team and wants them to lose. A group of 4 or 5 co-workers were having a similar conversation in a break room where the television was on FOX News before asking me about the team, but sure... none of this happens in the real world when amplified by POTUS and media organizations. These are just anecdotes of people who have no opinions of soccer in general at any other time (even with the facility guy having sons who play semi-pro).
It's not easy to put up a comment in which every sentence is completely wrong. Here's another old quote that the person above missed -- "Massive generalizations are always wrong". Hope this helps.
