"Attempted passing" being the key here. If Brooks is allowed to take that much space without pressure, he hits a much higher percentage of those attempts. He is by far the best passer of our CBs. He also would have improved our ability to play out of pressure.

I think Zimmerman has played well defensively, but Brooks is a major upgrade from any of the centerbacks on the current GC roster.

Justin Morrow could have been a decent option. He's even played CB and LW in a pinch.

Edit: He has better WS numbers than Lovitz or Lima fwiw.

If most of us don't know what to do with Puli as far as his key position within this formation, you expect GGG to know?

He's the best player on the team, so you put him in a central, attacking mid position. He tended to play out wide for Dortmund, but that's because you've got people like Axel Witsel in the center.

Witsel plays the same position as Adams... defensive midfield. Marco Reus was primarily the attacking midfielder for Dortmund last year. That being said, Pulisic is certainly our best offensive player.... and Adams is our best defensive player... so I think the best lineup may have each of them in the center midfield... Adams at the back and Pulisic at the front.

Brooks will break lines, which is huge. As soon as Bradley got the ball Sunday, 1) he didn't attempt anything crazy 2) There was nothing really open and available so he just played a lateral or backpass a lot of the time

Adams can play right outside back or defensive midfield. Marco Reus plays attacking midfielder or forward for Dortmund. Axel Witsel has played both attacking midfielder and defensive midfielder for Dortmund. Lots of talent in the middle for Dortmund, so they played Pulisic on the wing -- both left and right. He's quick, he can play in either position. If he plays forward for the USA, who is going to feed him the ball? That's the problem.

And of course we can't forget that Yedlin would probably have started for this team if healthy. [I dont' believe in the Yedlin at right wing experiment. Boyd negates the need for that.]

We're probably missing half of our starting defense with Yedlin and John Anthony Brooks out. [I also don't believe that the Adams at right back thing is going to last.]

Saying that, I don't believe that Lima or Cannon will be the reason we're knocked out (if we're knocked out). It'll be because we're really inconsistent up front right now.

The US has tested various formations to no avail. This lineup trotting with Pulisic and no offensive support is never going to work. I don't like Puli as a 10 because he gets hacked to death and lacks final third vision. Sarachen tried a 4141 that didn't work. The refusal to employ a 4231 with Weston/Tyler as your double pivot will haunt this team going forward. Nor adding a playmaker next to Puli aka Pomykal for at least two years.

Full credit for citing RWE but lets not lose sight that the context was your response to @ttrevett posting: "We were flat outplayed through the midfield all f'ing night long.".

We were outplayed in the midfield because of "The System tm" that Berhalter uses and the players (or lack thereof) that he deployed in said "The System tm".

"The System tm" is not only ill-conceived for the international game but even more concerning is that the players looked disorganized, unsure, and unmotivated. That is all coaching.

"Let's give him a chance" is not an answer after 10 matches, that is enough content to evaluate GB's naive ideas about the international game. We have seen the naive experiment at work. Actual Pirlo instead of Bradley and actual Gattuso instead of Lima in the gimmick RB role would not make any difference, we would still be flat outplayed through the midfield by any competent opponent.

Of all the people that rant about "the system" it's pretty clear you understand the least about the system.

We got overrun in the midfield for a few key reasons:

    1. "The System tm" so to speak, is predicated on getting 4 CM out there, basically. We never did that last night. I don't know why. But there was never really an adjustment to create enough options to not get railroaded. This is the first time we've really seen Berhalter keep everyone up high, leave only 3 CM and try to use the full backs up the wing to advance the ball. He also tried to supplement that at times with the striker coming back, and we know how that happens.

It was a terrible idea, but it had no real resemblance to other tactical elements he's used before.

    2. Our players executed like crap on offense. Some of that is on Berhalter. Trying to use Zardes as an outlet is insane. Trying to make Bradley pick out forward passes against an outnumbered midfield is not bright, either. But honestly, McKennie and Boyd were particularly TERRIBLE at not turning the ball over. I'm not suggesting they get benched, but the biggest difference between T&T and Curacao is Weston McKennie's midfield play. He's too good to play that badly.

    3. On defense, the top three pressed, but the defense stayed back. It wasn't effective for recovering the ball, but Curacao didn't have any real chances. I don't think it was intentional, entirely, but I'm not sure any of us really understand exactly what intent was versus execution.

You rant a lot. None of your rants seem to translate to things that actually occurred in the game.

    3-1 Jamaica wins.

This US defense/midfield will be exposed, along with Steffan's carelessness and arrogant.

Pulisic pulls one back so we don't look totally embarassed

While I don't think that will be the scoreline, I am growing more concerned if Steffen doesn't really develop his feet and passing if we are going to play out of the back. Haven't caught many Horvath matches since he came back from his benching, but heard good things and what I did see looked like he might be back on track to be our number 1.

We got and will continue to get overrun in the midfield because our DM's start with the lion. He cannot defend. So, to have 4 DM's we need 5 mids. New tactics, I love it.

Our players executed like crap on offense because we have one (1) actual player with offensive skills. He had to assist an all around middie so the USMNT could win. Arriola, Zardes and Morris (and to be honest Boyd) are not at the level to expose Curacao. Ouch.

    Jamaica tied Curaçao 1-1.

    We beat Curaçao 1-0.

Due to the Soccer Transitivity Axiom, we must beat Jamaica 1-0 or 2-1.

Arriola created two decent chances. And opened space on the scoring buildup.

With a Pulisic to Boyd pass in about the 4th minute, Curacao would have been beaten in style.

USA 2-0 to continue the clean sheets.

I am sorry, but I think he screwed up basing his system on the only player who he thought would be able to pull off his system. Did he not think about the fact that this one particular player could get injured and who would take his place? Was his mind made up after one game in which they tried this system? I am sorry but this is shortsighted at best. By now it is clear that the coach has not really picked the best of the pool available and we are stumbling forward with some success. But, IMHO, we should be stumbling ahead with future possibilities and learning something new. But whatever, our coach seems to be a little, I'm not sure how to characterize it, narrow-minded and unyielding so far in his National team tenure.

It has been very clear that his roster pick is shit. Our best 11 does not include the likes Gonzalez, Zardes, Mihailovic, Trapp, Lovitz, Ream, Bradley, Roldan, Lewis, etc. Heck there's a very strong argument that these players don't even belong in the best 23. His roster is looking at the past rather than the future.

He's the wrong man for the job.
