There's an easy joke in this map with a little Photoshop work around Liverpool/Newcastle/Scotland/your favorite target.

Sweden's English proficiency is wild though. Everyone in Stockholm speaks it almost flawlessly.

I'd say just about all Swedes speak it flawlessly except those from the North. Dutchies and Scandinavians are legit maestros of our language. And usually are equipped with some German or maybe French as well.

Back to the Italians, I can def see that. Most Italians I know don't speak any language but if they do, it's either a little German or a little English.

I've been living here for more than 30 years and still getting asked this shit regularly. Annoying as hell. It switches me into Borat mode and I'm starting to tell idiotic long winded anecdotes about non existing countries. Never been interrupted, people are so nice and trustful.

I am surprised that Spain and Portugal are in the same tier. People who know some English seemed far, far more prevalent in Portugal in my highly anecdotal experience.

Yeah, I think it depends what part of Portugal. I understand that Oporto is full of English expats and they are moving into Algarve as well. My first dedicated vacation to Portugal is next year so I will know more.

I'll apologize in advance then - next time someone asks, it's probably me. I usually find it leads to actual interesting conversations with people about more than the weather, but I can get how it might be annoying if constant and persistent... I will say, in honor of Borat, that (true story) I was chatting with a Kazakh Uber driver who came to the US via Armenia a year or two ago and learned more about Kazakhstan in a 20 minute drive than I had in my entire life... Did you know they do not actually nude wrestle in hotel lobbies regularly.

Yes, my understanding from my three years in Spain was that when it came to TV, Spain always dubbed TV series and movies, while Portugal would caption them... that said, that was in the past, and Spain may be advancing a bit with its younger generation studying more English.

I had the same thought. Would be interesting to see a map of the countries that dub English language TV and films vs. the ones that subtitle.

I did the Porto and Lisbon swing last year. Smallish sample size, but I feel like most people I came across under 40 spoke pretty solid English, much more hit and miss for older folks. Porto was incredible, you’ll have a great time!

I look forward to it, especially considering I will spend about one fifth of what I did on London, Paris and (shudder) Saint Tropez this year.

When in Bulgaria anytime I speak English outside of Sofia or Plovdiv, the reaction is akin to this.

My father in law has long lived in the capital and seriously, the only English words he knows are hi, no and jingle bells.

You got that right. Started off in London for the US debacle at Wembley. Hotel wise, Portugal was 1/3rd the cost of our Shoreditch shoebox, smack dab in the middle of both city centers. It was glorious.

You can speak Spanish to the Italians though and have a reasonable conversation.

I’ve found that to be true with Southern Italians. Northerners not so much. They probably understand you...they are just obstinate about it.

Hmm. Kazakhstan, Armenia. Not bad, but a little bit amateurish. That Uber driver should expand the story. I'd suggest adding Uyguria and Kirovostan.

I have to say, I was impressed. He did a little university in Russia, went to Armenia, Munich, then the US to meet Pamela Anderson. It was very engaging, although I thought driving in that odd swimwear had to be uncomfortable...

That's def what the Reddit page of Ask Europe seems to indicate.
eastern Europeans aren't too shabby either when it comes to English. Not like Scandinavians or Dutch, but far better than French/Spanish/Italians.

Awesome! The bolded part reminds me of something that happened during a family trip to Europe as a teenage. We had departed Venice going north and needed gas for our car. My father pulled the car into a small gas station with nothing else nearby. As the grizzled aging attendant filled the tank we heard loud explosions in the distance. My father, who knew zero Italian but quite a bit of Latin and could wave his hands with linguistic accuracy then proceeded to carry on a 5 min conversation with the guy, learning that the Italian troops were on maneuvers in the foothills of the Alps just north of the gas station. Both my father and the attendant fully enjoyed the conversation.

A consequence of the conversation occurred about 5 min after leaving the gas station when we came around a bend in the road and saw a camouflaged troop carrier just ahead. Soldiers were all over it in camouflage gear and branches tucked into belts and helmet covers. They were grinning and laughing. My brother and I stuck our heads out of a window and sunroof and held our hands out like pistols and shot the "pistols" at the soldiers as we passed. Several grabbed their chests as if shot and rolled off the troop carrier to the great hilarity of everyone. Quite formidable that Italian army.
