What that says is more about the team not scoring from the run of play than the play of Rapinoe. Lets look at those four goals. Spain - Two PKs. Great but hardly means somebody is playing well. France - Two goals. The first was a poorly struck free kick that France some how just whiffed on and it goes in the net. The second was a sitter. Now don't go overboard she still did score our last four goals. But to me its a testament to the team not playing well in the attack and not some great play by Rapinoe. Look at it this way. How many scoring chances has Rapinoe created out on the wing the last two games?
Well, they really gutted that one out! The low-pressure and counter game plan really befuddled France, as well as being a good idea in the heat. Really strong team defending including the much-maligned goalkeeper. Nothing wrong with taking your chances really really well. Pinoe rocks, $%#^ the haters...! I thought Heath stuck the knife in, but I guess Dunn had a toenail offside. I thought Ellis nailed the subs too, Horan was vitally needed, as another strong tackler in midfield. Lloyd battled and Press helped kill the game off. I thought Alex Morgan was excellent in her role, it's really hard to be a loan forward for the last 30 minutes when you were dead tired. Really nice job by everyone killing the game at the end.
Wow I guess we'll just agree to disagree. No way I am giving Ellis credit for that match. The second half may be the worst we have played in a long long time. If France had anything they score 3 that half. But I guess in the end the only thing that matters is the result. Which is exactly why she is still the coach.
What is silly is that you have to post that Rapinoe played poorly when she single handedly WON THE GAME. That’ like saying Bobby Thompson had a poor game because he struck out four times before he hit the home run heard ‘round the world. It’s just silly. If anybody is showing bias it’s you.
Nowhere did I say Rapinoe played poorly. What I said is that she hasn't played that great. I will say this. She did play better today than against Spain.
Would you claim that Babe Ruth was bad in 1927? He only hit 60 home runs, and he struck out a lot and didn't steal many bases.
Theres a difference between Megan the soccer player and Pino the protester for any cause. She should stick to soccer as long as she can
Ellis had a plan. The US won trying to apply that plan. So that's an argument for credit to Ellis. But it did seem like a bonehead-plan given the personnel. So, its a little hard to give a lot of credit to Ellis. I can appreciate the desire to take space away from France, but it's a very risky approach without a three goal lead. It worked out, but that doesn't mean it wasn't risky. In the process of taking space away from France, the US had no ability to hold the ball and build their own opportunities. It was a trade off that the US may have been better off not taking. Of course, a win is win, so who knows. Rapinoe is not suited to help give defensive cover and is also not suited to provide a stretching speed option. If the US has a lot of possession, and she plays simply, she is an asset. When the US cedes possession, or if she tries to play flicks and backheels and to dribble two defenders, then the US is better of with Press. Did Lloyd touch the ball during the first 10 minutes she was in the game? I wish she had been able to get her foot on it.
To me that was a clean victory from the US. There was no off-side on the US 3rd goal. As for the O'hara's handball, I would say I feel even relieved that, for once, it wasn't called. There is no penalty when the hand is so close to the body and getting away from the ball. I'm not satisfied about recent handball calls such as the one against the Japanese player in 2nd round, Sissoko in Champions league final, and Kipembe against Man U in Champions League 2nd round. The American players defended very well, neutralizing every French attempts. They've been dangerous on every counter. For the good of the show, my only regret is that the French team conceded the first goal so early, but that's all on French mistakes. Congratulations to Americans for having played it well. The French girls were really disappointing technically speaking, the US girls were a lot sharper, particularly collectively. Now to bring something good out of this world cup for France, it is that we have good potential among our younger players. I would say this team was a transition between 2 generations. For the older generation, the big miss was not this year, but in 2015, with that game lost against Germany that I would like to forget. But here, the team played as it could, and the better team won. Let's hope the new generation will bring us more for the Euro in 2021.
Was there a quick review that didn't result in an overturn, or was there no review? I would like to hear Cameroon's opinion of that call.
Agreed except for one thing: this "was" a great generation, but it isn't our golden generation. Our golden generation is the next one
Sigh. There is NEVER an on field review for offside position. NEVER. And there is ALWAYS a check in the booth by VAR for offside position on a scored goal. ALWAYS. VAR did EXACTLY what it was supposed to: it checked the position and let the ref know the check was complete and it did not have a change. That still shot with the lines comes from the VAR booth, showing she was just barely off.
She looked onside in the TV pictures. That would have been a critical goal and should have been validated more closely. Instead, They score their lone goal a bit later and its 2-1. Game ON
Basically a win against the home team. Congratulations to the uswnt. At this point, I don't know how they gut out these wins but happy they do.
This will be the last time I post on this subject. For the last time NOWHERE did I say Rapinoe was bad. Perhaps reading comprehension is hard for a few of you. What I said is that she wasn't "very good." What I said is that she did finish well but didn't create chances for her teammates. What I said is that she did play better today than against Spain. But I did not say she played bad or poor. This is the WC. This is when players should be at their best. Rapinoe IMO needs a break and I would not start her against England. I's save her for the last 30 minutes. Carry on.
Maybe it was just my ears, but it kept sounding like JP pronounced Le Sommer exactly like Alyssa Naeher...
You really just don't understand this at all, do you? It WAS VALIDATED by the VAR team in the booth. Offside position is NEVER validated in any other way. NEVER. The game did not restart with the free kick until that was accomplished. VAR worked EXACTLY as it was supposed to on that play: The AR called OS on the field, the booth reviewed and confirmed that she was barely offside, and then play restarted. (The only time offiside decisions can have an onfield review is when there is a judgment to be made about whether an offside player became actively involved--that is what every single OS onfield review in the WWC has been. [MLS is different--MLS is the only place in the world that there is an onfield review of offside position.) Over and out.
The USWNT midfield vs France: Pass Completion: 60% Chances Created: 1 Dribbles: 0 Dispossessed: 6 Clearances: 8 They couldn't break a press for anything. If France can finish, we lose that game. Brian and Horan are the only midfielders capable of breaking a press consistently. If England comes out pressing us, then look out.
