Understandably a risk lighting a fire here but gotta love the extra publicity Donny is providing the USWNT before the big game.

A sports figure refusing a White House invitation, since it is in no way government related, in no way disrespects the US, or the President. It disrespects the man that currently holds the office. In that I am in total agreement with Megan. There are about ten people in public view that I never ever want to be in the same room with and the Trumpanator is two of them.

As I have said elsewhere politics and sports should very rarely meet and things like "visits" to the White House are political and serve no other purpose.

Megan is a soccer player, and a pretty good one, and Trump is a politician, and a sociopath, the twain should never meet.

He first misspelled Megan's Twitter handle, so he got some blowback there:

1143903313752141824 is not a valid tweet id

Not sure why that tweet was deleted... it's not the one from the POTUS:

By the way, if I know a little bit how politicians use to act, he probably has a strong feeling that this time there is a reasonable chance that USA won't make it to win the World Cup, so he posted this right before the game vs France, just in time to be able to tweet an "Ha-Ha, Told you so" kind of post in the immediate aftermath of a potential USWNT's early exit. By tweeting this now, he has the chance to do so, or to just follow up with a "well done, blah, blah..." should they win. But he wanted to grab the chance to make light of Rapinoe should USWNT go out, so he needed to prepare for that right now, thus the tweet.

Frankly, I don't know if I am more annoyed, entertained, ashamed or worried that the chief of one of the most important nations of earth puts all of his energies and efforts in such childish behaviours... :x3::unsure::(

I think you are absolutely correct and this gives him a little more UMPH if they lose. At the same time I think Rapinoe is stupid for engaging in this right now and for stirring the pot. But as this point, she has to respond to this tweet today and it will be a major distraction for the team. She will respond, he will say something else, likely a few more US players will get in on it and on it goes.

I have been consistent in saying the US is better than everyone else and they win this WC pretty easily but this could really throw a wrench in things. When you have the President calling out your captain and your captain is in a pissing match via twitter before the biggest game, that is not good.

Trump has been working to get other countries around the world to decriminalize being gay/gay behavior. I'm a Vet from a family of Vets and I don't like Rapinoe's attitude at all. Still, I'm pulling for our team to beat France and go on to win the tournament. Hopefully Rapinoe will figure out a way to make this right. She's making this about herself, not the team, and that is never good.

She said this several months ago. If someone is making things about themself, it's the President responding to what she said as a personal affront, perhaps not realizing it was said months ago, and inserting himself into the narrative about the team. She at least is on the team making penalties, so it is partially about her - he is obviously not on the team and probably shouldn't have anything other to say other than wishing the team his best.

Social network gave this unprecedented weapon to men in power: they can target, single out and bully simple citizens who express their opinions. How sad it is, and how disproportionate. Unluckily, this trend has began here in Italy also. Pure barbarism.

If Pinoe's was from several months ago, then Krieger just took the bait and made it about today. Surely some other players will comment now and this is just a distraction for the team. Trump will fire back probably too. Taking the focus off soccer and onto politics.

There is a reason I never use the anti-social systems like twitter. That reason is that their only use is to make communication harder and understanding nearly impossible.

Since I have mentioned them elsewhere I will include a quote from my eldest granddaughter: "Why would I use a communication system that only serves to make it harder to understand what people are really trying to say."
She does text too much for my liking but she does not use twitter or any other anti-social media for communication.
She has learned that texting me is a good way to get no response.
The youngest says: "I would use twitter if everybody were 'nice' there." Her views about the universe are still quite childishly simple. That is a good thing.

Well, her video, profanity included, is making news around the country and probably the world today, and that is all that really matters, is it not?

If Trump hadn't responded it wouldn't have been news most likely.

Nope. This would be a non-story if Trump had not chosen to make it news. His over inflated ego and his sociopathic personality make it impossible for him to just ignore even the slightest taunt. This would have been little more than a flash in the pan if the Trumpster had not made it important.

It does disrespect the Office of the President. But people are allowed to do that. That's how she makes a point.

Completely agree, though it is nice to have the President (any of them) support the USA teams.

I like football because it tries to stay above politics. It really should stay this way, but this team has cemented itself on the subject

I have to disagree there. The office and the man are, thankfully, very different things. If it were some official and regular US service then I would agree but it is a personal invitation, if it happens, not an official one. It is like if he and I were attending a dinner, unlikely in the extreme, and I refused, as I would, to shake his hand, I would be showing that I had no respect for the man, which is true, but it would say nothing, pro or con, about my respect for the office of the President.

Best case scenario he does not invite them and they don't go to the non-invite.

Personally don't see why any sports figures should be getting invites to the White House for winning sports titles. If this practice stopped all together because of this president and this USWNT that would be a step forward. Sports are too highly elevated in society as it is.

Off the soapbox and back to soccer. US still wins Friday 3-1.

Well, you're wrong on this. But that's ok.

He disrespects the Office of the President too. They both do. They both can't help themselves from wallowing in the mud.

Actually I think it is Trump that has shown and is showing the greatest disrespect to the office of President. He has made it all about him but that is to be expected because that is what a sociopath does, make everything about self.
