Rapinoe was tired in the 2nd half, I'm not sure why no subs, players like Press of Pugh no doubt would have opended the attack.
Lavelle wasnt in the air with her knee raised when the very slight contact occurred? Lavelle didnt take 2 steps before she decided to go down? Did replay show Lavelle's leg move AT ALL as a result of the impact? She was not kicked. She leapt into the air at the same time another player tried to play a ball and the players foot grazed her outer leg on her way down. There is nothing dishonest about that interpretation and Id be willing to bet many impartial observers see it that way.
It was a call that Neymar gets. Love him or hate him, Nermay gets hacked a lot, and he dives a lot. Diving when you feel contact, specially inside the box is part of the game.
I'm out...its hard to to talk about a play when the opposing side to the discussion keeps changing how the play went. We've got Lavelle never making contact with the ball with the Spanish player playing the ball coming down on Lavelles foot to ending up being Lavelle playing the ball by leaping through the air putting herself into Spanish players kick.
She was moving left right while the Spanish player kicked into her. It’s dishonest to claim it was caused by her movement.
Wait for a few more pages when people will argue that it was Lavelle that committed the foul and should have been carded.
Very late to this but I imo it wasn't a penalty. At worst she brushed her foot against leg, I don't think there was any intent or impediment. If any contact results in a foul the sport is changing and not for the better I feel.
Quick which law penalizes the act of "being in the air with a knee raised"? Guys, you need to stop reaching so hard...
I freeze the frames that clearly show contact was caused by lavelle leaping into the air... Here we see lavelle hasnt left the ground...ball is closer to defender who is already starting to kick it
I got a lot of response saying intention is not in the LotG... This is weird since I grow up watching the game and it is common for Brazilian broadcast to have a famous retired ref commenting on the LotG and they always stress intention. So I went to CBF and got the LotG https://conteudo.cbf.com.br/cdn/201905/20190529132434_644.pdf Portuguese isn't an official language of FIFA so we have the Spanish version. You are correct my argument was poor. I try to analyze a play based on history/experience instead of going to the LotG. I still do not see a foul in that challenge. IMO it wasn't careless, reckless or using excessive force. But intention, as retired refs like to point out in Brazil, is definitely considered to make judgment calls about some fouls. Or else, there was a foul (missed by the ref) when the american player that kneed Losada face. To establish attempt you need to make a judgment call on intention
here we see defender's follow through making contact with Lavelle's raised leg...then lavelle taking at least 2 maybe 3 steps before she collapses
I’m no massref, but fouling on the follow through is still a foul. However, tripping over a player’s feet after they get the ball is expressly called out as not a foul for tripping. The studs up could give you a case for dangerous play I think though
It's a key tactic in the men's game...agreed. The women used to play to a higher standard. I dont want to see a bunch of female Neymars running around..unless we're talking about their game skills not acting ability. Messi and others get hacked just as much as Neymar.
Actually, incidental contact and niggling contact are already called out. The foul here has to clear a threshold of being careless in tripping a player. I don’t see how this minor contact qualifies especially given that it doesn’t look like there was any tripping but rather a diving some time after contact. I don’t buy it
Actually yes, that was also bizarre. Was Rapinoe recklessly throwing her arms around? Didn’t look that way to me, however painful the result
