((Yes I WILL change the TBA to whoever finishes as second place tomorrow))

Starts at 7 PM in the east coast and 4 PM in the west coast

A win naturally brings us to the semi-finals and a chance to redeem ourselves from 2016. The mentality of our squad is good and the coach's experience is showing just how far he can take us. Now we were pretty fortunate that despite using some of our starters in the match against Paraguay, they are still likely well rested especially since they don't have to play a match until Friday.

I think our biggest strength is our defense and our approach to counter-attacks whereas our one weakness is finishing off the chances we get and actually nailing in those oh so important goals. Not only that, winning into the semi-finals would mean that I would have to fast until AFTER we win that match and win the final; as I vowed to god that I would not touch food (only drink water) until after we win both our semi-final and the final itself should we win this match.

Yes I am dead serious as it helped out seemingly when we had that troublesome group stage in 2018 WC...lol jesus what I am I doing to myself? XDDDD

You guys know I've done that before and I am going to do it again...

Now for my personal take on who should start:

    Ospina
    Medina - Sanchez - Mina - Tesillo
    Uribe - Barrios - James
    Duvan - Falcao - Martinez

Our defense and Mina in particular works out perfectly as our ultimate defense and possibly the best in the tournament.

Our midfield will need complete control and I feel that these 3 can easily command without issue no matter who we face and connect between defense and attack.

Duvan and Martinez have the physical power and influence to score and assist goals...and while it's strange to suggest Falcao, I feel that in all the games he's played despite not scoring a goal, he still has shown the drive and work-rate to help us win the ball back and help build up; no longer a pure number 9 but actually giving decent passes and winning the ball back for us many times. He needs to be acknowledged for that.

Despite me suggesting Cuadrado over Diaz, I feel that he's best as a fresh supersub given that we go directly into penalties if the game ends 0-0 (no extra time in the QFs) and his pace may be a deciding factor in what is likely to be a stamina/physical draining game from whoever we face out of group C.

You are playing all 4 of our strikers at the same time :)

    --------------Ospina--------------
    Medina
    - Sanchez - Mina - Tesillo
    Uribe - Barrios - James
    Duvan - Falcao - Martinez

-Will Ospina be with the team? Is his head in the game if his dad is dying?
-Medina or Arias can go either way think the coach likes Medina better so I agree with this
    - No way he starts Falcao and Duvan also the 3 of them together won't work. Falcao will see the bench
    - James as our RM
    - CM wouldn't mind seeing Lerma there. Don't want to see Cardona or Cuadrado playing out of position there. Also against Chile/Uruguay..... I just don't want to see one of those hot heads red carded

    I want to see
    --------------Ospina--------------
    Medina
    - Sanchez - Mina - Tesillo
    ------Uribe - Barrios - Lerma
    James------Duvan - Martinez

    Two things:

    1. I think we have been great on the counter this tournament and this has impressed me from CQ. I relate the poor finishing today more to Diaz being erratic and overmatched by the pace of the game today (he pooped himself a few times, including the awkward control that cost us a goal). With Duvan, Falcao or Roger taking those shots I immediately feel better.

    2. Uribe was a mess against Qatar after a great game with Argentina. With both Cuellar and Cardona looking terrific today, curious who starts next to Barrios next game.

I rather Cuellar; there were moments that Cardona made me face palm and felt that he was showing off/being greedy. Cardona only played today and was subbed out for a reason...he needs to understand and that will motivate him.

he had a few passes that lead to counter attacks with a better team of killers in Uruguay or Chile that would cost us a goal. Also he would have great through balls for Diaz but for some reason thinks Diaz Is Usan Bolt.

I always thought Cuellar was slow but he had crazy hustle when he chased after the Cb or RB of Paraguay and stole the ball in the 1st half that almost lead to a goal.

I don't like Cuadrado and just think he lost a lot of his speed and stamina. Plus he makes stupid decisions. As Long as Cristian Zapata or Cuadrado don't start I'll be happy.

I know which play you are talking about. That was probably my favorite play of the game. At first I thought it was Falcao. I was shocked that it was Cuéllar. Made me super proud and happy

Cuellar was fantastic - he waited a long time for this opp and nailed it.. Fantastic to have options at that position.

Zapata had one sloppy exchange. Borja I thought was solid.

    Think Quieroz will go with:

    Ospina
    Medina-Sanchez-Mina-Tesillo
    Cuadrado-Barrios- Uribe
    James-Zapata-Martinez

If I had a doubt it would be Uribe after how well Cuellar and Lerma played.

    Cuéllar was a beast.
Not only because he scored the goal but because he was hustling all game long and provided good defensive pressing that caught Paraguay by surprise.
Him next to Barrios would be an interesting experiment but Uribe is a bit more technical and can provide us better scoring options with his head. Once again, it is great to have such options and depth. Even Lerma has made a case to start with his assist against Argentina and a nice header yesterday that unfortunately went straight to the keeper on a corner.

the whole Medina-Arias thing has me a bit confused. Arias is very good at positioning both defensively and offensively. He also did a decent pass for the goal yesterday.
But he still has no clue how to cross the ball in the air consistently while Medina does that a bit better. I think I would start Medina but once again it is great to have two more than serviceable options.

Up top we are loaded with talent but still having problems efficiently scoring off our chances. Hopefully we work on some things in training and the floodgates open up when we really need them to down the stretch.

Think we'll go with Duvan up front again?

Depends who we face; I have a feeling that depending on our opponent our coach will use a different formation and set up for either or.

Chile going all out despite the injury/fitness concerns with some of their players. They really want to risk them just to avoid us.

And no surprise that Edcuador and Japan will try to snatch up a win with an all out squad.

I think he'll put Duvan again and do what he did last time and sub in Falcao later on.

I don't think the lineup will change aside from possible Medina or Arias, don't know where he stands on the topic (and tbh neither do I).

Chile it is then. Btw I tried to "save" the title change to us vs chile but it wouldn't let me despite saving that option in another tab. Can a mod change it please?

Duvan in vs Chile IMHO... got to take advantage of both the height and physical battles....

I wouldn't be too worried about Chile's offense in the sense that I believe our defense is much more equipped and styled to defend against Chile's quickness and pace... Uruguay was too stiff for the most part but smartness prevails and their north-south speed is still good.

Davinson and Mina are playing great and should make their presence known...

So we're the only team to have a perfect 100% record and our defense is our greatest strength; based on how Chile played against Uruguay, we know that they will not wait for us to bring the match over to them and will immediately challenge us ASAP. Our counter attacking system should work.

Any news on Ospina? Is he with the squad now?

I think Duvan starts no matter what at this point and especially against Chile he should have a big advantage with his size and hold up play, if they have Medel starting Duvan should completely eat him up. Chile press well so having a reference point to play past the press if necessary who can win balls and play in people trailing is a big asset, Chile might be the team I'd think he'd be the most valuable against. Obviously I wouldn't want us to over rely on long balls, but its a good option to take away their press and as we saw against Argentina, James in particular is an expert at long range passes into space.
