So far, my seats from FIFA have 2nd level and it’s been nice to get that overall flow of the Match perspective for a change. My seats from US Soccer have generally been in the same zip code as the Stadium. I’m hiring a ticket consultant for the next WWC (or start giving money to other federations - maybe they can hook me up

The earlier reports of the Yellow Invasion were gladly overrated. They did occupy the LL of one end zone and a couple other pockets but they all looked like they were having a good time. Crowd was easily 85-15%.
Sam is starting to really acquire that it factor and Lindsay once again controlled the skies. Rose and Morgan should dye their hair blonde......other teams will freak out and won’t know what hit them.
There seemed to be about 4 non set piece heart in throat moments and 3 were self induced - - gots to clean that up Ladies.

For you behavioral science jockeys.......If Sweden did in fact not care about a Match in the World Cup......is that the actions or behavior often exhibited by a certain type of individual????? hhhmmm. HHHMMM

On the "7 changes, they did not care" point of view:

That's 7 changes from their game with Thailand. Looks like 4 changes from their 1st game, and two of those missing starters came in as subs. Isn't that more relevant than the lineup used for the Thailand game?

I haven't seen a huge number of games; caught 2 France games, 1 England, 1 Germany, and Australia.

Does it seem that the US is playing as well as anyone? No one's looking like a juggernaut. (I did not catch the Netherlands.). So, should be a good knockout round?

    FYI.

Heath was FIFA's player of the match.

I like JP. But, I also like Myernick. And, I think all of the PBP announcers have been keeping it tidy, that is focused on the match and the action therein. I've been vociferous about my distaste for the Foudy/Darke/Twellman sports bar style of broadcasting: "oh, look! while we were talking about something totally unrelated to the match, someone scored a goal!"

Knock out round should be great.

Also, regarding Heath and Pinoe, I'm a fan of both. I'm just saying that with both on the field, we're really static and slow. I always thought we'd end up with one of them, with a fast player on the opposite side.

And, the way Mewis played, it will be interesting to see who sits between Ertz, Rose, Horan, or Sam.

I'm sure the coaching staff will address this issue going forward. However, this is where I like Pugh. I would sub Pugh for Rapinoe going forward. She keeps things moving quickly.

I dunno. Pino and Tobin have been the starters a long time. They even tried Pugh in one of the 8/10 spots, to accommodate Pino and Tobin on the wings. If you're going to take Pugh and try to make her a central midfielder so you don't have to change out the Pino/Tobin combo ....... that's commitment.

I think that experiment with Pugh was more to give her some experience centrally in case things happen during the tournament in a match, like injuries or cards, that force some unusual rotations. In tournaments sometimes things that would never occur otherwise get forced. After all Mia Hamm once had to play keeper for a short time in a match in the 1995 WWC.

    So many hot takes. [emoji91][emoji91][emoji91]

I feel like we STILL haven’t seen the US in full form and glory. Sweden did just enough to be competitive and the US looked really sloppy in the second half trying to kill off the game. I’m glad Lloyd’s streak is dead. Maybe she’ll look to pass a little more now. Spain is going to make us work for it. They have been feisty this tournament.

I probably should keep my mouth shut, but this is my personal opinion: I still fail to see how revoking Heath's goal [or the defender's own-goal, as it were] for Lloyd getting a half a step ahead of her defenders in spite of not in any way being involved in the play that led to the goal would have been an incontestably morally correct or common-sense decision. I thought the whole point of the offside rule was to prevent a goal from being scored using the unfair advantage that an offside position creates. Should it not matter that the goal was scored without any reliance whatsoever on that half-step advantage briefly held by an unrelated player? That's my point of view anyway.

My issue here is not with your opinion but the way in which you framed it as an absolute, and seemed to rail against the rule-makers and rule-citers in general. The poster whose comment you responded to never called anyone stupid for disagreeing with him [at least not here]. Quite the opposite: he made quite explicit his understanding for the differing opinions of others in the text of the post you quoted. Within the context of this thread your comments struck me as needlessly combative and accusatory; perhaps you were venting some warranted frustration from the forum you mentioned. I do apologize if my comments are in themselves rude but I felt the need to be honest about my own views. Although I found their written product a little distasteful, I do respect the purity of your motives. To your credit, your ultimate point seems to be to denounce the kind of toxic "I'm right and you're wrong" attitude that sometimes makes these debates go south very quickly, although you make implications suggesting that you embrace that very perspective earlier in the post.

It's just that broadsiding the rulebook with sweeping "should"s is a dangerous no-man's land to venture into, further opening a Pandora's box that's already ajar with the bountiful room for interpretation the often ambiguous rules themselves leave us. We work with what we got. I've been guilty in the past [even quite recently] of complaining that the rules as applied in some cases contradict the spirit of the game, if not in so many words, but it occurs to me now that such comments can come across as a bit preachy without the proper framing, as sincere and well-intentioned as they might be.

Once again I must emphasize that I view this slight exaggeration as applied to this instance, since Lloyd's poorly timed offensive run in my eyes was in no way relevant to the goal ultimately scored. Did the refs, using generally accepted refereeing principles, fail to appropriately punish it [by revoking the goal subsequently scored by an onside player/unfortunate defender] to dissuade similar offside runs? Perhaps; that's up for reasoned debate. But was the poorly timed run in itself rewarded? I don't believe so; Lloyd did not make any use of the offside position to create or contribute to a goal-scoring opportunity, nor was a goal awarded as a result of it.

SportBilly, the poster I replied to, was on a thread in the Referee Forum in the last few days where we discussed this. For him to not acknowledge that there is another side to this, that there are reasons to think Lloyd is actively involved in the play, "interfering" with the play, is intellectually dishonest. He absolutely did NOT make explicit his understanding for differing opinions - other than acknowledging that they are different, which is meaningless. He simply said here's the decree from FIFA, here's the definition they handed down, what possibly is there to argue when he's just come from a Forum where there was plenty of discussion over the problems with FIFA's interpretations of Law 11.

He's free to defend FIFA and IFAB's ruling on this matter and so are you. A lot of fans, a lot of people who've played the game at a high level, are dumbfounded that this is now the official Laws of the Game as decreed by FIFA. You'd think that would be a reason to really try to understand why they find this so hard to accept, but you're free to disagree. You're free to pretend, if you wish, that you and SportBilly are really trying to understand the opposite point of view. But you're not.

Oh, I definitely acknowledge that. I just think there is a difference between saying one has a problem with the rule and “It was an incorrect call”. The former is a complaint with FIFA/IFAB which many have and the latter is to impugn the referee.

The referee got it right here. Doesn’t mean there aren’t problems with the offside law

You're free to believe what you choose about me and the way my mind works based on as little evidence as you care to collect. I can only speak for myself in saying that I am always open to the opposite point of view if it is laid out in a civil and logical manner. And the time you've spent on your manifesto against what you appear to have convinced yourself is the mentality of some of your opponents in this debate could have been better put to use persuading myself and others on the precise merits of your case itself, particularly in this instance. The true debate should be about the facts, not about the debate itself or its participants personally. I regret making my critiques of your posts only because I foolishly failed to recognize that doing so would only perpetuate the debate about the debate, and I have no desire to extend that particular discussion any further.

Finally watched this tonight. Had a few excuses for not catching it live. The TV at the bar next to my office didn't have sound, I only arrived about 15 minutes before kickoff, and I was watching the pre-game on FS1 (ended up watching the game itself on Telemundo, just based on what the restaurant staff was eventually able to connect).

I'm torn on this. As a general rule I can't not like a video with Tobin in it, but I must admit that the impressionist dancers around a juggling Tobin weirded me out more than a little. The supporters awkwardly standing around her [and staring at her] in a strangely arranged semicircle toward the end did as well, to a lesser extent.

What would have been wrong with that quality monologue set to a montage of her career highlights? Leave it to Fox...

Yeah, that was weird and over produced. I liked her monologue. I think you have it right; play it over highlights and it’s probably pretty amazing.

Now that you mention it, I realize that I wasn't paying full attention to the video initially because I was too busy reading and posting on BS on my second screen. I was glancing at it from time to time and listening to her monologue. I'm guessing if I were to watch it more cautiously I would probably have similar feelings. I typically don't like the over commercialization of players. Her monologue, I thought, though, was pretty good.

Ellis if falling into the same trap the men fell into when they failed to qualify. That is, failing to move on when father time catches up with players. Its fairly obvious to me that Pino is done. No more speed, caught from behind all the time. England will kill her if we get that far. Tobin is also slow now. Morgan has lost a step. At some point, teams have to say its time to these older players and move on. Ellis is not doing that enough and it will cost her at some point

Some serious points raised. I'm not sure if Pinoe is done (how many times over the years have people said that?) but the deeper point remains - is she not fully recovered from some nagging injuries, is she still too far from 100% that we're not getting enough of the "good Pinoe" to compensate for the "bad Pinoe"? It's fair to ask if someone else should be starting in Rapinoe's place

Clearly we need to put in Lloyd for youth and speed.

None of our players are free from weaknesses. These older attackers are still the best attacking group at this tournament, and it’s not at all obvious the youth movement is better in the short term. Yes, I imagine some movement toward more youth after this tournament and even more after the Olympics. But wanting to retire the 18-0 (13-0, 3-0, 2-0) attack right now? Every team in the world dreams of feeling like three multi-goal shutouts in the group stage isn’t enough.

    The "some point" is now.
This WWC is where it will catch up with her or justify her.
We'll know in the next 2 weeks.
