I get your point but I think you're basing it on a fallacy--that right now we're in a perfectly good ship which is just temporarily being captained by a deranged incompetent. So as long as we replace him with any reasonable adult willing to listen to the navigator and/or harbor pilot before we crash into something, we'll be fine. Trump hasn't just gone on a mad spree. He's done serious damage to the institution, to the norms of governing, and to just about everything the Presidency touches. So actually it matters a great deal who replaces him. A merely competent placeholder, historically, was often all we needed. But sadly I'm afraid that Trump has set in motion things which will take skill and leadership to reverse, undo, fix, correct, however you want to look at it.
Fox News will still be around. As will TYT. Discourse & behavior aren't improving overnight. Let alone the Senate
I don't expect things to ever be fine. I'm only hoping for things to be better than they would be with a second Trump term.
Well.....Best people...contd..... After story breaks of FBI looking into 2010 domestic incident with Acting Defense Secretary Shanahan, POTUS announces he is withdrawing his official nomination and instead nominating Mark Esper, Secretary of the Army. https://t.co/L3eryhqZO4— Jake Tapper (@jaketapper) June 18, 2019
I think the decay is systemic. It was obvious already before Trump. The easiest way to confirm this is to take a step back and look at the entire West as a whole. The fact that a similar slow motion collapse is happening across several Western countries suggests that the causes are global and systemic. The global economy, technology, the environment, immigration and the tension between globalization and traditionalism.
I absolutely agree. The tree had been rotting for a long time; Trump is the guy who said "Hey, what happens to this thing if I start kicking it?" Not a perfect analogy but I hope that makes sense.
Rick Wilson's ETTD details how the rotten edifice of the GOP was a significant contributor It ranges from turtles destruction of democracy long before trump turned up, to weak weasels like reince who pulled his trousers down for trump during the primaries through to clowns like Matt schlapp who invited the full crazy at CPAC year after year
In fairness, GOP didn't exactly help when they were labeling anything socialism if it was suggested by Dems. Want to fix the roads? But we have to raise taxes, that's socialism, they cry. They were so rabid about Obama and Dem policies being socialist that eventually left leaning were going to take it and run with it. EDIT: It's not even a new thing the GOP's been doing for years.
Good ol' Mitch. Has there ever been any other politician with his level of hypocrisy?: "Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Tuesday said that he does not support reparations for descendants of slaves, a topic that has become a point of debate in the 2020 election cycle. "I don't think reparations for something that happened 150 years ago for whom none us currently living are responsible is a good idea," McConnell said. "We've tried to deal with our original sin of slavery by fighting a civil war, by passing landmark civil rights legislation. We elected an African American president." Of course, McConnell (or his ancestors) were on the wrong side of all of those things. https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/449136-mcconnell-reparations-arent-a-a-good-idea?userid=57999
He sucks ass only slightly less than Trump. I want to see this actually happen after he croaks: Erecting a statue of Dan White (who assassinated former Mayor George Moscone and Sup. Harvey Milk the previous year) and having the parks department sell eggs, stones, and tomatoes with which to pelt it.
I want to address the notion that Trump is kicking off his re election campaign today. If youll remember he announced his reelection campaign shortly after his inauguration. He has regularly been doing rallies, organized and ticketed by Trumps personal organization. He has not been doing Presidential speeches with general admission. Here is my theory as to why todays Orlando thing is 'starting his campaign'. The security for Presidential events is on the public dime while campaign events are private contracts. His campaign has not paid the security costs for these privately ticketed events. He wants to retroactively designate his previous privately ticketed events as Presidential events. That way he gets to call them private when its convenient for him to regulate the attendance, and public later, when its time to pay the bills. This is Trumps typical organized crime mentality. You just wait a short time until the talking point about the campaign privately ticketed events for which cities are owed is that they were Presidential events and thats on the U.S.
The Amway arena suggests some connection to the Devos family, though I'm not sure what beyond naming rights.
IMO that is key part of the non-trump aspect to this. For a long time GOP has been moving towards one party rule, where everything done by their "enemies" is effectively counter revolutionary It's a 100% ideological movement, which no longer wants to engage in the soft constitutional conventions which are key to a functioning democracy. We are seeing the same thing in the UK now where "Conservatism" is being washed away by the revolutionary zeal of Brexit. Anyone who opposes it is an enemy of the people and a traitor.
How many Trumper nominees & staffers have been wifebeaters? Put that on an endless commercial loop next year.
