No squad rotation is good, as said. But I did not agree with that particular choice. I would've given Alex the last 20 minutes of the game for Lloyd (or perhaps even Press). I imagine there is a decent bonus for the Golden Boot and she's allowed to pump her stats against another cupcake, plus people were concerned about her alleged bad form (I have no opinion on that I didn't see her in very many other complete games, I watched a bit of Australia and a bit of Belgium) and you stay sharp by playing.

VAR or no VAR I hate the tactic, I don't trust VAR enough to change a long-held opinion. And I hate the keeper's whiff even more.

LOL, she strikes me as a center forward stuck it at Winger and is not used to scoring from a more difficult angle...

First time I've ever seen Long play, hopefully it was just jitters and she's a better player than that.

Would have been better to pick it up today and miss the Sweden game than get it in the Sweden game and miss the 1st knockout game.

Most ridiculous thing I've ever seen, would it really hurt FIFA to give them another 30 seconds of music so they can complete their anthem?

That’s why you have never heard most of the words to Argentina’s anthem. 90 seconds is what you get. Some anthems are sung doubletime.

I want to be the wet blanket probably because I try not to let my opinion be influenced by gushing commentators.

There was some real bad finishing there. One of the shots went right to her in the middle the goal with both corners open.

A couple of headers were headed straight at head level or above, and not down. Anytime you have a keeper that tall she's going to have real trouble on headers down, as Lloyd showed on one.

And I've already mentioned there should've been some shots back in the direction the ball was played from, not doing so is a pretty low level of finishing.

I think that gamesmanship could be the interest of the final round, especially if France drops their match.

Good trade. Lakers need more offense.

It would have been a better trade when Kobe or Nash were there. They played soccer.

You only get three subs, and we used them all; and she's not expected to start the rest of the way. It ain't the NCAA version of soccer...

    1. Is it possible that they care more about winning the tournament than winning the golden boot for Morgan? And that Lloud's conditioning is such that no one need worry about her playing 90 in one group match?

    2. Are they so ignorant as to not understand that the rules state that they must play the same line on all free kicks as the one they choose against Chile? Tsk tsk...

    3. I thought Naeher played it exactly right, assuming she was aware that the runner was off side. She played to give the runner no shot if she could actually address the ball, and ignored the service; this makes it impossible for the VAR guys to conclude that the off side did not affect the play; it pretty much guaranteed that the play will be called back. And the offside wasn't at all close, you know. The only chance Chile was going to score on that was if the service went in and the off side was seen as uninvolved in the play. The runner did not get to the ball that I could see.

    4. I thought Press shot very well; missed a couple, yes, but was saved on some very accurate shots, and not soap bubbles either. They pay the other guys too, and that keeper may have made the all-tournament team today.

    5. I thought Allie had a legitimate complaint or two and the ref was maybe missing some of what actually happened there. That said, you ain't gonna win anything after the first argument except maybe a second card... just nod your head and trot away-- things aren't going to get better, and they can get worse.

I really liked the coaching on both teams here-- Ellis roster selection pretty much justified itself, even if Brian wasn't very impressive; Ali, McDonald, Lloyd, Sonnet all played rather well, Davidson was a major factor, Pugh was terrific at a rather thankless job-- affected the flow constantly, keeping Naeher's day quieter than it might have been. And I thought the Chilean coach pretty much did what gave his team the best chance at an unexpected result-- and still has a chance to rack up some GD against Thailand and get through there. A tall order, but this team is closer to competitive than it might look.

I so hope they would play a different tactic against a team that knew what they were doing.

I'm not 100% certain they will.
    This is a huge assumption.

And not playing the whistle is a terrible way to play soccer.

If my goal keeper deliberately missed the ball hoping that offside would get called, I would drop her the next game.
Agree to disagree. I think the commentators were overly impressed by awful finishing versus good goalkeeping, not the out of this world goalkeeping they were espousing.

I thought Krieger and Davidson were very good. As mentioned, Long was poor, and I was not very impressed with the game Brian and the right-winger whose name currently escapes me had.

The finishing wasnt much worse than the Thailand game. Go back and watch the 13 again...a good number would've been saved by a good keeper, and another few would've likely been saved by a great one. Several shots today off the woodwork, several terrific saves, and yes a few bad shots, but they put 9 of 26 on frame today vs 20 of 40 against Thailand. Put the Thai keeper in the Chile goal, and I imagine we would've seen a much different score.

I didn't hear the commentators at all. Endler's goalkeeping was terrific and she deservedly was POTM.

I was not as impressed as much as others were by Endler's goalkeeping. It was solid but really nothing spectacular. She made the saves she should make and she made a few really good saves off powerful shots and one or two off accurate shots but she was never really tested by shots that were both powerful and accurate. Press' shots were good examples of pretty easy saves of hard shots. To Press' praise she mostly hit the goal, which is different that her usual form, but the saves were well within reach of Endler. Maybe Press has learned that the only way to score is to actually hit the goal with your shots and now she just needs to refine that a bit.

Endler's footwork was about as good as I have seen in a female goalkeeper since Nadine Angerer played for Germany. (Does anyone else remember the commercials of her supposedly as a baby rejecting balls that were tossed at her in a crib? ) However Endler's reactions are a little questionable as she made quite a few easy saves look hard. Endler is a more than adequate keeper but she is not the world beater that she is being made out to be.

What impressed me was that Of those 2 or 3(?) that hit the woodwork, Endler had them all covered had they managed to be perfectly accurate shots...

So that’s a few extra spectacular saves that we missed out on that won’t be discussed.

I get it. The question was regarding why she was even in there to plan to play the full 90 minutes. Prior to this match, she's only played one 90 minute match in the past 6 months.

I'm not saying it was a bad decision to play her a full 90, just curious as to why. After thinking about it, my assumption is that her durability has a lot to do with it, coupled with the fact that she was going to do a lot of end to end chasing in this match.

These 2 are feel good games, pass duh ball shoot duh bus shed duh jitters. I don't see the next game as different. Why would Sweden want to win?

The way I got my brackets done: France. England and 1st place in this group are on the same side. The true winners of this group will be the runners-up.

In 2015, from the starting whistle, the US were up against very tough opponents. The team grew and built on that. My biggest concern now is our defense have not been tested so far whatsoever, or into the next match or the 2nd round match (Spain or China). Four games. None of them are preparing us for France.

I'm not sure what that really has to do with anything. I agree the Thai goalkeeper was poor, that doesn't improve the finishing in this game, which is what we are discussing.

As a matter of fact, it would increase the concern that we need to finish a lot better against a good team, with a good goalkeeper, where we might have much more limited chances.

OTOH by that standard, France's games aren't preparing them for us either...

If people think the finishing was poor in this game, where were the complaints about the finishing in the Thailand game then?

It seems like many people look at the scoreline to determine whether the finishing was good or not.

There were a lot of excellent saves by Endler. It's laughable that some people weren't impressed by her. Press had two great shots saved by Endler. Her volley crossed in from the right would be goal of the tournament so far if it weren't for a great save. Press' header and volley had an awful lot of power on them. If the Thailand GK (or possibly any other GK) was in net, everyone would be screaming that Press should be starting.

Because it seemed kind of pointless to say "that 11th goal would've been saved by a good goalkeeper"...
