Because she won’t start against Sweden.

The whole front half of today’s lineup will sit next match.

She did, but Endler's save on Press' header just beats out Correa's save on Parris' penalty for me. I mean, Press looked sure to score up to the very last moment before Endler got there, and it wasn't even that bad of a header in my opinion.

The big question remains and that is will our goalkeeping be good enough when we actually play teams that can test us.

It looks like our attack and defense are at least OK and mostly stellar. We have work to do if our keeping is at all lacking as it appears to be.

True, but I still wouldn't have guessed she (along with Press) would have had the most minutes of any forward after the first two matches. I think only Dahlkemper and Naeher have played more minutes so far than Lloyd and Press.

Dahlkemper and Naeher have barely needed to jog so far. Hardly a comparison.

For once I’ll admit Jill has managed minutes well. The players we need for the next couple rounds are rested and ready, with enough minutes to keep them sharp.

This lineup is usually what teams put on the pitch when they have won the group already.

Since the game was pretty much noncompetitive again, let's have some fun with some coaching points, opinions, and observations.

    Squad rotation is good.

Not playing your Golden Boot leader at all, and playing your 37-year-old 90 minutes is bad.

My 45 year soccer pet peeve is a high line on free kicks, and I've rarely seen one as high is they were playing. Might cost them against a more sophisticated team in their runs than Chile.

Downright scary that the keeper makes a meal of the only time she was actually under pressure in her last 190 so minutes. Don't care that it was called back, the play was terrible. They are going to need good goal keeping sometime in this tournament!

Some really poor shooting on our part today, pick out a damn corner or shoot/head the ball back the way it came. Press this means you, although she had some nice dribbling runs.

I'm not sure I would ever want to see the girl that subbed into center midfield in a competitive game, I think her name was Allie Long.

Ertz' header was brilliant at pretty much any level...

That kind of supports my point. Only players who have hardly had to exert themselves have played more minutes so far than Press and Lloyd. Ellis has done well to give her whole squad minutes, but I really do feel like she has to watch the rest vs rust line closely.

I'm pretty sure those teams have also often gotten starters in with their three subs to keep some freshness going into the knockouts.

I'd like to see an earlier replay than they ever showed because I thought the defender knocked the ball back over the online before the cross was even attempted.

If not, it was clearly over the line before the defender played it out.

    I’ll play

So squad rotation is bad? Alex is now rested. Carly wasn’t going to start next match anyway.

When a player is off by a mile she’s going to make anybody look bad. It was a non-play. That’s the purpose of a high line. With VAR it’s safer than it used to be. In the old days the goal would have stood.

Now you know why Press doesn’t start.

The player she replaced didn’t have such a great game either. The USA putting so many forward puts pressure on that spot.

One thing no one mentioned is the packed stadium. What was it, like 45,000 mostly U.S. fans there? Now that's support. It was essentially a home game for us.

Probably mostly US fans, yeah, but a loud "Chile, Chile!" was often heard throughout the stadium. Also, when at the beginning of the match the Chilean anthem was sung "a cappella", you had the impression that there were a lot of people singing it.

And teams would rest the players they most needed

Ertz, Horan, and Dahlkemper got subbed out to keep them sharp and but not burned up.
    You only get three subs.

Aw hell. I sing it if I’m in a stadium and it’s playing. I sing several.

With Argentina its easy. They usually skip the part with the words, so you ahhh aahhh the first part and just sing the words to the coda. They didn’t use to even do the Coda when Sepp was chief of FIFA

The crowd for the match vs Sweden becomes more interesting because of the numbers of US people in France for the WWC. Sweden also has a very large number of supporters there. In fact I think their match was about as heavily Swedish in the stands as the US' match had US fans, maybe a little less.

That means that the potential for purchase of tickets is at least at the same order of magnitude for each country for the last group match.

The match itself has just a little meaning but because both are sure to advance the meaning drops some. If either team wins they are the group winner and the US wins the group on a tie. It is about as simple as a third group match can be when there is still doubt about placement.

This makes the "War of the supporters" potentially the most interesting part of the last group day.

Of course I, personally, would prefer that, during the match, there be no shots of the stands or the coaches or anything that is not directly part of the match play. However the fact is that Fox loves to show fans and so we will see a lot of them and, now, at least there will be something a little bit interesting to see when Fox chooses to show something other than the match.

Then we have the "other" mystery: Will either team play to avoid France in the quarters? Personally I believe that would be stupidity in the maximum. Trying to manipulate a result to avoid a team backfires more often than not. But should both teams decide to lose to avoid France then we could see a replay of the famous match, I believe in Africa, where both teams tried to score own goals and defended the other teams goal for, I think 20 minutes or so. That would be funny to watch!!!! ;)

My point was about the players coming in. Let's say the US had this lineup in the final group game. Mewis comes in for Ertz to keep sharp, Lavelle comes in for Horan to keep sharp, and Dunn comes in for Dahlkemper (Davidson shifts over) to keep sharp. Now, you have six players that got to keep sharp but not burned up instead of just three. (I think Morgan should have gotten some minutes, but that would have involved Press or Lloyd coming out.)

Morgan like the rest of the US players had to wait/rest quite a while to play their first match, and CFs, especially when they don't have to really physically challenge for the ball like it was the case for Morgan against Thailand, generally don't exert themselves much relative to most other positions on the pitch. Now, Morgan did hustle to win the ball a few times against Thailand, but I wouldn't call her sitting out this match as her now being rested. I really don't think a 15 to 20 minute cameo would have put additional strain on her body, but agree to disagree.

Agreed. Beyond idiotic, especially for the U.S. as they look to defend their title. They may encounter France in this tournament as an eventuality. Postponing an encounter with the home team until later in the tournament only makes that confrontation more difficult when it does occur. Also they wouldn't exactly be exuding confidence by implying that facing France in a quarterfinal means a probable early exit from the tournament.

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, the match was before or right at the start of the internet so I do not think the limited footage that existed ever got digitized. At a conference in the Mideast a film was shown of it to show exactly how absurd some rules could make behavior. The irony of it was that in a match playing at the same time the two stars of the team they were trying to avoid got injured and that reduced that strong team to just average.

Under current laws of the game I have a vision of teams trying to head the ball, to avoid the backpass law, to their keeper in their own area and then the keeper tucking the ball under his or her arm and broken-field running around the other team's player into the goal like a rugby player and then being tackled and diving and tying to touch the ball down in the goal. Rugby meets soccer meets the Keystone Cops.

BTW: In case someone does find the footage of that match I would be interested as well. My memory is a bit fuzzy of that time as I tried to keep up with several of the truly famous people in soccer (Three English and one German) at the hotel bar three nights in a row. I have no idea how many brain cells I killed at that conference.
