Seems the Matildas have the developed the same problem as the Socceroos.

The friendly performances against France and England probably suggest yes it would have happened under Staj, but maybe not in as painful a fashion.

Speaking of painful, this new waiting for a play to end before flagging a fairly obvious offside is painful. If its not even close to being wrong- make the call straight away- please. :)

Good to see the team bounce back. I didn't see the match, just the goals on the news, but to fight back from 2-0 down when when they have already had one disappointing performance shows a lot of character. Congratulations to them.

Back to this, I thought Milicic's response was interesting:

Wow Norway 1 - 1 Australia went to ET then PKs.

Norway went first and took excellent penalties, well practiced confident into the far corners or waited until goalie was committed.

Australia took horrible horrible PKs missed first two. Didn't have have the mentality. 1st taker was Sam Kerr, the captain just skied it. Went downhill from there.

Really thought the Matildas could do it. Shame.

    4-1 pks

Yep- very professional European penalty taking by the Norwegians.

The sending off of Kennedy obviously killed off any chance of winning the game in extra time.

Did anyone else notice the shonky "coin toss" before the shootout? Dodgy as :D

Was wondering what was going on with that toss. I’ll just have a look at it then flip it over.

A draw will be enough to get first place and home and away matches with Vietnam. A loss means we play South Korea.

    That's two goals, that is!

    Final score AUS 1-1 CHN

    Ahhh, they'll be fine. Maybe.

First things first, the Olympic playoff is home-and-away, 1st leg in Newcastle on 6 March. Vietnam beat Thailand in extra time in two SE Asian tournament finals after the Women's World Cup, but shouldn't pose much of a threat in this one.

Olympic playoff 2020: Australia got a 5-0 home win, and this happened in the 2nd leg in the Vietnamese city of Cẩm Phả:

The W-League final is today (Saturday), Melbourne City v Sydney FC - one of the few football events happening around the world. Due to the coronavirus risk, it'll be played behind closed doors at AAMI Park.
Australian viewers, if you can get near a TV the kickoff is Saturday 3.30pm AEDT, live on the ABC and other places
I'll be posting match updates in our thread:

On the women's board we've also got a thread for anyone's thoughts on the Covid-19 virus at this difficult time.

Australia are seeking another new boss for the women's team, after Ante Milicic changed jobs:

The Olympic rescheduling to 2021 affected the timing of his departure, but it may become an unwanted distraction to the team:

Matildas coach Ante Milicic departs to take up A-League job with Macarthur FC
    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-07...icic-departs-to-take-up-a-league-job/12470570

And he isn't the only one:

If the FFA picks a replacement from within Aus, they could choose Ross Aloisi:

OR they could join the worldwide game of swapping each other's coaches as if they're just Panini soccer stickers, a.k.a. The Managerial Merry-Go-Round

As posted by @Klingo3034 in Women's International, there are some dilemmas for players...

...Also complicating matters, the new national coach Tony Gustavsson seemed to rule out picking W-League club players for now.

The national team has new sponsors (they're a pack of bankers), and a new TV deal, which appears to move most international matches to Network 10 in Australia.

4th place in the Olympics 2021–1! The team's best finish in the competition, and their first Fifa semi-final.

Just two narrow losses kept them from even higher things...
