I don't know about that. I am not sure whether Macau FA really needed the spectator to be Macau ID holder. They might have let Zhuhai citizens enter the ground.

I think they would have gotten <2,000 if they hosted the match at Macau Stadium. Because it is a competitive and win-able match for them.

Macau's Duarte scored the only goal. It was really rather scrappy. Hopefully it will be enough for Macau to go through to the second round. But I think chances are still 50:50 for both sides.

They drew 1,200, 600 and 353 in the last cycle of AFC Cup qualifying so 901 would've ranked second highest in that comparison.

Their statement on Facebook cites the "recent terrorist attack" as the reason for their concern.

I find that ridiculous. It was an attack perpetrated by a specific religious group against another religious group as revenge for what happened in New Zealand. This was an attack based on religious tribalism and the chances that the Macau team could be caught in the crossfire of another terrorist attack are quite low.

Macau FA's Chong Coc Veng claims that the association is unable to secure insurance for the team to travel to Sri Lanka therefore he cannot risk sending the team.

If it is true then it should be a valid reason but I don't think Macau FA has ever communicated this to anyone and by now it must be too late.

South China FC once got an AFC Cup match moved to a neutral venue because of the same thing, no insurance available due to travel alert. (I think it was Moungthong United's home match in Bangkok that got moved to Phuket.)

Anyway I think this is the end of Macau football for a very long time. The players are clearly angry and frustrated at the lack of communication from the Macau FA.

I really don't understand how a VERY rich government like Macau can provide so little, even tiny, support to its local football association and players. I mean, can't they afford a PR team so they can talk about their problems MUCH earlier and louder?

Leong Ka-Hang (above right), who is not in the Macau squad due to injury, said the players are eager to play. He said his fellow teammates attended a Macau FA meeting. The players are aware of the insurance problem but claim that Hong Kong team went to Maldives in 2015 to play the hosts under similar circumstances. The team thinks Macau FA have not done enough.

Some are speculating that this is China's way of completely removing Macau national football team from appearing ia
Macau FA said they will accept any punishment handed down by FIFA and AFC...

Hahaha, all the punishment are towards banning the team from future participations. Of course the Macau FA management are ready to accept them since that only punish the PLAYERS!

Macau FA have handled this whole situation EXTREMELY POORLY. They never talked to the players or the media or the fans until everything is already too late. They keep saying Sri Lanka is unsafe but they never sent anyone to Sri Lanka to examine the real situation to give everyone a first hand report. They have not even, apparently, told officially with FIFA and AFC about their non-appearance at the match. Now they say they will accept punishment.

Macau FA ARE A TOTAL AND COMPLETE DISASTER.

"FIFA also provides insurance to teams playing in FIFA- accredited matches, which means a lack of insurance is not likely to be the cause of the MFA’s decision, as some have suggested."

So Macau FA simply has no excuse whatsoever. They just say they are worried. But they are not the ones playing. They are just going to sit somewhere nice in the stadium surrounded by Sri Lankan officials and probably armed security personnel.

If this generation of Macau players refuse to play for Macau again, then there is no hope for Macau football for 10 years at least. The only way they will be ever able to resolve the problem will be to reform Macau FA. Those losers NEED TO GO.

This is going to be a huge blow to the Macau players who had worked so hard for the win only for the Macau FA to screw things up.

I believe there is some secret plan going on behind the back. The Macau FA is systematically giving up international football, whether club or country. They are even willing to accept the Macau players' mass walk out.

Maybe Macau FA will announce an entry into the Chinese league system soon, with a wealthy entrepreneur providing financial backing?

Nikki Torrao, Macau national team captain, wrote a letter to FIFA and AFC explaining the situation. Stating clearly that the players all wanted to play and are still keen to play if the match could somehow still be re-scheduled, it was the Macau FA that prevented them from playing.

I don't think FIFA or AFC will re-schedule the match, although interestingly it is listed as postponed on FIFA website.

At least the letter makes it clear that the players are not to blame for this whole mess. ALL the blame should go to Macau FA.

Hang Sai and Ka I protested against the MFA by making a mockery of their MFA Cup tie. Hang Sai played with only six players while Ka I played nine six. In the end, Ka I won 21-18.

It is an interesting way to protest. They scored so many the scoreboard couldn't even keep up.

Macau FA really ought to have sent a representative to visit Sri Lanka and survey the actual situation before making any decision. At any rate they must let the players know at all times what the situation is, and not just inform the players of an irreversible decision has been made on their behalf.

FOOTBALL | MACAU FA TO INVESTIGATE 21-18 SHAM MATCH

Footballers on the two teams that protested a recent decision by the Macau Football Association say that their dramatic 21-18 final score on Sunday had nothing to do with their clubs.

Nevertheless, the Macau FA told international media that it was investigating the case, which may constitute improper conduct. Both clubs have launched their own internal investigations, pledging that if violations are proven the concerned players will be punished.

The 21-goal victory of Ka I over Hang Sai on Sunday was put to an end early by the referee after noticing that the two teams were deliberately conceding goals to one another. The match was filled with walking attackers, unspotted defenders, and missing goalkeepers.

The footballers involved in the apparent protest say that it was held solely by their own initiative, and did not reflect the position of their clubs.

They were protesting the decision made by the Macau FA not to send the Macau SAR team to Sri Lanka.

Citing security concerns in Sri Lanka, the Macau Football Association decided last week to withdraw the Macau SAR team from its scheduled second-leg match as part of the joint qualifier for the 2022 World Cup and 2023 Asian Cup tournaments. In a rare victory, the Macau team beat Sri Lanka 1-0 at home in the first leg.

Footballers on both teams seemed to have made an agreement prior to kickoff not to stage a competitive match, reported local Chinese newspaper Exmoo.
Four minutes into the match, Lam Ka Chong of Hang Sai scored the first goal. In the first half, both teams scored 11 goals, with Ka I leading by six goals to five.

The Chinese newspaper reported that the referee had ended the match early, seeing the footballers not playing a competitive game.

According to football rules and regulations, football governing bodies such as the Macau FA and the Asian Football Federation can open an investigation into suspected match fixing and pre-full time match termination.

Hang Sai player Lam Ka Po clarified to the press after the match that it wasn’t the club’s decision to stage the uncooperative action. He said, “we hope the [Macau] FA can listen to the players.”

Lam added that discussion regarding actions in the next stage is in progress, but no decision has yet been made. He emphasized that the FA had not contacted any of the players.

Macau FA should put its time to better use and see what can be done about the Sri Lanka match. All the blame are firmly on their door.

By the way, the Guangzhou R&F vs Southamption match tickets will be distributed freely to Macau citizens this Sunday, 6,000 tickets will be available, each fan can collect 4 tickets.

    https://macaudailytimes.com.mo/ggct-stresses-travel-alert-is-recommendation-not-prohibition.html

Macau’s Tourism Crisis Management Office (GGCT) issues travel warnings to countries and regions to serve only as recommendations, the Office stressed a day after it reminded the public that its second-most serious level warning would remain in force for Sri Lanka.

It also noted, regarding the purposes of the system, that the “Travel Alert System […] acts only as an indicator of states of emergency in order to raise the awareness of individual people […] and does not constitute a guarantee of security.” Neither does it aim to be a “prohibition on traveling.”

The equivalent authority in Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Outbound Travel Alert (OTA), publishes a more comprehensive list of dangerous destinations, including countries such as Syria, Pakistan and Lebanon. Asked about their absence from the Macau travel warning list, the Office said that their inclusion or not depends “on the degree of threat to personal safety, the duration of the threat, and whether the affected site is a travel destination sought by Macau residents.”
    ======================================================
So the travel warning is only a recommendation.

I think FIFA and AFC should re-organize the Sri Lanka vs Macau match to another date and this time tell Macau FA they HAVE to come and play.

FOOTBALL | FIFA TAKES MACAU OUT OF WORLD CUP FOR REFUSING TO PLAY

FIFA has removed Macau from qualifying for the 2022 World Cup, sending Sri Lanka to the next round by default.

The Macau Football Association (MFA) refused to send its team to Sri Lanka this month, citing security concerns after terrorist attacks in April and a level 2 travel warning posted by the Tourism Crisis Management Office. Macau led 1-0 after the first leg.

In response to the decision, several footballers from the Macau team petitioned the MFA, asking to be held “solely responsible for all the dangers to life, health, property and other related matters that occur in Sri Lanka, and have nothing to do with the Macau Special Administrative Region Government and the Macau Football Association.”

Some footballers on the team threatened to never play again if they were not allowed to participate in the match.

FIFA says its disciplinary panel ruled Macau must forfeit the second leg 3-0 for failing to play. The Macau federation was also fined 10,000 Swiss francs (about MOP82,000).

Sri Lanka joins a 40-team lineup in the next stage of World Cup qualifying. Eight five-team groups will be drawn on July 17 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Group winners and the four best runners-up advance to a final Asian qualifying round. Four teams then qualify for the World Cup in Qatar while another team can qualify in an intercontinental playoff.
    =========================================================
So we now have the expected outcome. The players lose as usual and the Macau FA just need to ask the very cash rich Macau govt to pay their fine.

I hope Hong Kong draws Sri Lanka now. Let's see how HKFA manage this issue.

FOOTBALL | INTER MILAN VS PSG MATCH FINALLY CONFIRMED

The strange case of the football match between top European teams, Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), which it was announced in early May would take place in Macau on July 27, has finally been confirmed by local authorities.

Earlier, the Sports Bureau (ID) said they had not authorized the match, as they were unaware of any request for the rental of the Macau Taipa Olympic Sports Center.

Now, according to an ID spokesperson, the bureau has finally allocated the stadium for the date.

“We have leased the stadium to the organizers [of the event] but all the operations such as ticketing, marketing [and others] are the full responsibility of the organizer,” the ID said in a statement to the Times.

Such an acknowledgment puts an end to the doubts about the match that had been announced in early May by the two teams as part of the teams’ annual pre-season tours.

According to a statement from PSG at the time of the announcement, the match will also be part of the celebrations of the 20th Anniversary of the Macau Special Administrative Region, as well as the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France.

According to media sources, tickets for the match will go on sale on Monday, July 8.
