Sounds believable. Klinsmann was never shy about putting bigger names "in their place." Guzan did post two shutouts during that hex (including away at Mexico), so there's that at least.

Believe me, I want to talk. But I consider myself extremely fortunate to even have these conversations with this guy. We’ve become good friends and the last thing I want to do is throw out something that gets traced back to him. Odds are he would just brush it off, but I’ve met 2 other MNT vets, through him, who both have said things and then been like “oh shit, did I say that? NOBODY REPEAT THAT!”.

He never played for JK, but the other 2 I’ve been introduced to did. 1 is still a big part of the USSF organization. Could definitely affect him considering the way that place operates.

I’ll say this, my views on how jacked up the entire system was under JK and Sunil weren’t even close. It was way worse.

Again, total speculation, but I bet he was more than just “unhappy”. I speculate that he even reached out to senior leadership at USSF and asked for intervention. ;)

Is this more of a "Sunil and JK were idiots" thing, or more of a "the relationship between them was toxic," or more of a "Sunil and JK were blood brothers and that caused massive problems?"

Yeah, I'm not getting it. I see the two operating completely separate. Though, starting with the Donovan cut, Sunil had to put on his sunny, happy face to approve of everything that his selection did.

Sunil had a man crush on Klinsmann since 2006.I dont need any inside information to know that(although any inside info would be informative for sure.)

Sorry for the multiple quotes, but it's easier to answer/make sense by looping all these in together.

@russ, Absolutely. Although, it wasn't exactly a secret that Sunil was chasing JK for years. I hate using the "fanboy" label, but if the shoe fits....

@superdave Right or wrong, once Jurgen was in charge, Sunil was so invested in him leading the program that, basically, he was beyond questioning. Paraphrasing one of the guys I met who played during the JK years, "It was like watching the President of your high school student council trying everything he could to hang out and be best friends with the QB of the Varsity Football team". That line stuck with me. Sunil made EVERY excuse he could for what was happening. Constantly deflected daggers being thrown at JK. I don't remember who it was, but someone on the boards once called Sunil "Baghdad Bob" and I'm not sure there's a better comparison. But, ultimately, it was his own ass that he was attempting to cover. After all, it was him that made the hire.

@cleansheetbsc Couple things. During the JK years, can you remember 1 game that Sunil didn't attend? Just 1 game where, at some point, the camera didn't point him out in a box, seat, or on the sideline? I can't. I totally get the hands on approach, but he was obsessed during that tenure. Again, paraphrasing one of my friends, "I don't recall a post game locker room that Sunil wasn't walking around in". I'm not implying I know for a fact that he was involved in line-ups or roster selections in the way that JK would have been, but he was far more involved at that level than you'd expect from someone with his job title.

The Donovan cut was one of the best conversations I've had with them. Almost as good as the Feilhaber vs Dempsey/Jurgen convo. I love this quote, "If you were to rank the dumbest moves in US soccer history, that's #1 , 2 and 3". They also implied that more players than just Timmy reached out to Sunil for an intervention. The team also knew that Julian Green was basically bribed with a spot and that Brad Davis was carrying a knock that he picked up prior to training camp, but re-aggravated before the final cut.

I'm going back and making mental notes on all the chats we've had. Gonna attempt to tell as much as I can without dropping anything that could get back to anyone. More to come...

The last four inexplicable managerial selections reflect, like we need a new party in this country, we also need a new soccer federation. The organization we're reliant upon for necessary change is infested with rigged rules, cronyism, and monetary conflicts of interest. Fix that, and the manager part will take care of itself. Until then it's likely to remain a problem, among many others. The rot starts at the top.

Just to lay out my cards...I thought it was a terrible decision. But I did think there was one way in which it might have made sense. It’s based on locker room dynamics, an important element of team success that we fans are blind to.

I wondered if JK felt Landon couldn’t start with his 2014 abilities. That’s not an insane proposition. But further, he felt that having an icon lurking on the bench would undermine the leadership and/or confidence of the guys who did start. He may have felt that Landon’s value as a sub was less than the detriment of having a legend lying around. He may have felt that if, for example, Bedoya had some bad moments against Ghana, seeing Landon on the bench would make him even MORE anxious. This has nothing to do with how Landon might have acted as a teammate, it’s just basic human psychology (to Jurgen.)

So my question is...would your friends give that scenario any credence, or would they say, nice try, but no; it was a stupid, indefensible decision.

Cutting Landon was like the hubristic act in a Greek tragedy: the inevitable Jozy soft tissue injury meant that our 4-5-1 ended up featuring Clint as a lone striker and Bradley as a combo #10 and box to box midfielder. The knock on effect ended up, over 3 games, killing Bradley in Brazil and it seems to me ultimately devastating his career. The fact that JK took attacking players he had zero faith in over Landon became a huge factor when Jozy got hurt. If he wasn’t going to play guys like Mix or Wondo after Jozy went down, then those were gobsmackingly bad selections. Why were they there?!?!?!

The Julian Green goal at the end, too little too late, was the gods rubbing Jurgen’s nose in the stench of his hubris.

I guess the demise of the USSDA is truly the end of the Klinsmann era and probably the end of the 10 month season so reviled by many parents and coaches.

Just a few months after Klinsmann's departure from Hertha BSC they looked terrific under new coach Bruno Labbadia in a 3-0 win over Hoffenheim. What a turn-around! Granted, some of these Hoffenheim players looked not quite up to the challenge physically but considering the controversy surrounding the club Berlin looked fantastic.

Whine all you want but Klinsmann's record speaks for itself; Landycakes is still not going to be on the 2014 WC squad and Bruce Arena told us why!

Huh, so there are still people in the world who think Klinsmann is a legitimate coach. That’s depressing.
