I recommend we call ourselves "Yankees." Kills two birds with one stone.

It is what most of the world calls us anyway, and it reminds the Confederate States that they didn't win and so don't get to make the rules.

I almost wish I could rep this twice.

But, does not most of the rest of the world call us "Imperialist War Mongers" or some such. We could use that and then we would throw that derogatory back in the face of those that started it.

But if we use "Yankees" would not the "Cubs," "Dodgers," "Red Socks" "Marlins" and all the other teams object?

Only about half of them. And about half of those would quit if we just stopped acting like it; or at least stopped acting like the Confederate States won...

    Losers?

    Sad?

I think he meant similar to how we now say the United Kingdom as the short form of the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" rather than "Great Britain" (it's kinda for the opposite reason in that it's a more general term not less, but still a similar reason in that it's about using the best terminology to accurately describe the country).

I'm a Red Sox fan and would not have a problem with it. There's a difference between nationality and team you support. Just look at Canada, they have a team called the Canadiens and a team call the Canucks and people don't have a problem with it. You can be a Canadian/Canadien/Canuck and not support the Canadiens or Canucks (and you can be someone that's not a Canadian that supports the Canadiens or Canucks ;) ).

The only people that I see having a problem with being called Yankee are people from the south.

I don't know why I'm in one of these moods but this topic is starting to irk me so I'm preparing myself with all the scolding and defensiveness I'll inevitability receive from my perspective on all of this.

White Euro-Americans can call themselves yankees, yanks, Canadian, the fighting Irish,"revolutionaries", liberty-seekers, missionaries or whatever makes the most common sense to their manifest destiny and their colonialist heritage.

If you guys really want to "go there" and get into who is American, the individuals that just happen to be my ancestors are the real Americans, except the ancestors would probably prefer another name since America is named after a European.

No, the real people of these lands are the ones that built the beautiful pyramids and empires you see in the Americas, the ones that ate and developed agriculture , the architecture built using their own mathematics, art, and astronomy and had a rich beautiful oral history that was completely destroyed by you know who.

So y'all can call yourselves whatever you want I guess, but a lot of us won't identify as yanks, or anything named after a Civil War where we were considered primitive sub-humans to both Union soldiers and Confederate soldiers.

I have a t-shirt with a picture of Geronimo on it.

The caption is: "Fighting terrorism since 1492."

It kinda depends on where you're coming from and where you've been, doesn't it?

Yep. The every problem in The United States is due to an unenlightened emigration policy on the part of the Native Americans. Them stupid pilgrims (and those that came before) should never been allowed off the boat.

Is it not amazing what a little side comment about semantics and common usage can cause? ;)

I agree with your overall point of view. However, the term Yankee originated around the time of the Revolutionary war, not the Civil War. But that doesn't invalidate the rest of your statement. It also brings up a whole 'nother can of worms... using the nationality of an Asian country as a descriptor for the inhabitants of a completely different continent... but it's probably better to not go there in this forum...

Honestly, this is the most interesting topic of discussion I've seen on this forum in a looooong time. ;)

And yet, both sides thought highly enough of the abilities of pure blooded native American officers to promote them to general... and IIRC both men continued in the profession and served with distinction for many years to come.

In the post- Mexican War years there is plenty of testimony-- from men who would fight for both sides in the Civil War-- to the effect that the Mestizo troops on the Mexican side were among the best soldiers in the world, every bit as tough and smart as the best the US could send against them and far better than the white(r) ones.

And of course nearly the entire Union force that fought at Glorieta Pass were people of Mestizo or NA heritage. They weren't particularly concerned about being considered subhuman, anyway...

I think I have that one too, I got it in upstate Massachusetts at a county fair. It was a Department of Homeland Security t-shirt, and Geronimo and his group had rifles.

To take this back on topic, it looks like Fubo is going to show all WWC matches in 4K. Still hoping they'll add 4K to the Fox Sports Go app (or have the Hisense app again), so I can watch with my existing cable subscription.

This kind of thing is the primary reason (well one of the primary reasons) I have several streaming devices. I have Rokus, Fire 4K stick, Shield TV, a computer hooked directly to a TV and even one just Android box that I almost never use.

However I do not own a 4K TV because my old weak eyes do not see a difference so I will not be watching in 4K. But I do have choice and if one device acts up I can easily switch to another. Now if my internet goes down I am screwed. I do have a backup of sorts for that but a cell phone hot spot is a poor substitute for a 100 meg download internet line.

I got a Shield when the NWSL switched to go90, so I could cast games to my TV (well and I got it rather than just a Chromecast so that I could use the apps too). Before that I was just using a HTPC. And ironically, there's no Yahoo app for Android TV, so I can't watch NWSL games with it anymore (well, unless I use a browser). Fortunately I bought a TCL TV recently and it has a Roku built-in, but I do prefer the Android TV interface.

I didn't have a 4K TV during the MWC. But it was still nice to watch the streams because as I said it was the international feed, and the bitrate was higher (so even if you're downscaling the 4K to 1080p, it will look better than the 1080p stream, and much better than the over-compressed 720p feed from my cable company). Though with this announcement, I'm guessing the 4K streams won't be the international feeds anymore... at least not for the games that will be broadcast on Fox.
