Great analysis PiTo. I have liked Brobbey for a while now so I'm hoping he pans out. Big guys that bully their opponents at a young age due to size are always hard to project, but I think he has some top skills to go with size, strength, and finishing to become a top striker. Here is hoping. The Dutch need it

I can't find any information on how tall he is and I think this is the one thing that would hold him back as a #9. Can he turn into a forward like Mbappe (Brobbey looks more muscular but they have the same general size/build)? I'm not sure because he doesn't appear to be as fast or have that kind of ball control.

It's also worth noting that Rensch is just 16 and Unuvar doesn't turn 16 until next month!

I watched the full game against Spain. The first 20 minutes were lifeless and the connection between the three lines were really poor. If it were not for Spain's poor finishing, the Dutch were already behind and it would be a mountain to climb. It gradually improved. 3 players really impressed me: the left back who has very good skills, Bannis who kept chasing with good stamina and Unuvar who once had ball in his feet he could bring danger. On the other hand, I was a bit disappointed by the captain Taylor. As a controlling MF, he was not specially technically gifted and he was slow and did not show composure when under pressure.

@Kevin Cheung - Welcome aboard!!!! I too was disappointed in Kenneth Taylor. He's been having some good matches at Ajax and I hope that his performance can pick up in the final match. Unuvar is a great talent and has been playing above his age group for several years now.

  7. Well, that's not a recommendation in my book:(It's the opposite of it.

Italy head and shoulders above? They were completely dominated by France and scored on the only 2 shots they got (one was a glorious free kick, and the other after France inexplicably took off their 2 best players). That France team is not better than the Dutch, either. Italy will need a lot of luck again not to be run off the pitch; though these things will probably get a little chippy as it is the final and they are kids. They are certainly not a stacked team and are mostly carried by one player.

Brobbey is actually quite technical for his size. He's made a number of very nice plays that you wouldn't expect from a big, strong striker up front. He needs to be more clinical but I'm not concerned about his progress. He dominates against older players too.

Maatsen has been great in midfield, and I had mentioned that they didn't look as good against England until they switched to having Salah-Eddine (amazing talent) back on the left and Maatsen at the 6. I love Kenneth Taylor who was key in scoring their goal to go to the final against Spain as well; he looks like a real talent and leader. Rensch and Bogarde both look very solid. Taabouni also is a really intriguing talent but like most 17 year olds needs to work on his decision making, but his play for the goal against Spain was sublime. Unuvar is an obvious superstar in the making, absolutely amazing beyond his years. Hansen needs to find consistency but has disappointed me in this tournament.

I have the Dutch as big favourites to beat this Italy, who will try to play very tight and physical then hit on the counter or try to win a close free kick for Esposito to score. Udogie and Esposito are really the only two Italian players that have impressed me in the tournament, and even then Esposito while talented makes a lot of questionable decisions.

He's around 175-180cm, something between this size. Well, he is fast as hell, once Heitinga said that Brobbey is the fastest player in Ajax Academy, and I remember I even checked the parameters Heitinga mentioned, and they were very Walcott-esque (30m sprint? something like that). In a way Netherlands play the game (positional construction of actions), he doesn't have enough of space to show it I think. His problem are his skills with a ball, he's definitely not comfortable with a ball in front of a defender. He's like smaller but more mobile version of Lukaku than anything more or less close to Mbappe for sure.

To be honest, while there are big expectations about the new great 9 in Dutch football, I don't think this is THAT MUCH important considering both Ajax and National Team has rebuilded within a system with false-9 (Depay, Tadic). Yeah, it will be great to have other option here, and there are plenty of options with Brobbey, Redan, Zirkzee, Boadu, maybe Venema, maybe Lammers, maybe Piroe for a future. But I'm more interested in development of two classy wingers: Bergwijn, Gakpo, Malen, Kluivert, Stengs, Kluivert, maybe are options worthy of attention for EURO 2020 and WC 2022.

Malen is my first choice to be honest, his productivity considering his role was really great.
Taylor is very good player, he was a beast on a pitch against Sweden, what people are disappointed about is that he's more of typical b2b player with good intensity, defensive skills and basic offensive weapons (great shot, good situational passing) than a playmaker. I guess people get picky with the rise of Frenkie De Jong. I wonder how will look like dynamic between him and Gravenberch in few years to come. His 'hockey assist' against Spain is what describes him well as a player I think.

Yes midfields need to be balanced and the type of player that Taylor is is underappreciated right now. It's a lot like a Wijnaldum who people have for years not given enough credit to. Those type of players are becoming more and more important in modern football -- the ability to run all day, work hard, control the ball well, resist pressure and most importantly work well in transition are key in today's fast paced game. He has all of that, and his technique is actually quite good but he focuses on the team first and not glory hunting.

Sure. Considering how good are De Roon and Wijnaldum as complementary pieces to De Jong right now, I wonder what's the upside with Van de Beek, Berger, Taylor, Maatsen, Kokcu, Ihattaren, Unuvar (cause I guess they'd play offensive midfielders in 4-3-3), not to mention Timber, Taabouni, Reit, Eiting, Ekkelenkamp, Goudmijn, in five-six years from now...

Maatsen is for me such a big enigma. If he's Feyenoord/Ajax player, then I'm pretty sure next year he's rotational player on a back of defense or as central midfielder on Eredivisie level. I thought about it that maybe I shouldn't overreact about one tournament performances, but he played full matches in U23 Chelsea Team (and they're so stacked in youth categories) in age of 16, and put up good stats in a team that won UEFA Youth Cup, so that's quite impressive. But he plays in Chelsea, so that's definitely not a good sign. They're on pretty similar level with Salah-Eddine so perhaps we'll see again the difference between staying in Netherlands and moving abroad in their development.Considering Bakker's departure from Ajax Youth Team, Salah Eddine can get is chances on Jong level sooner than later. And it's not like Ajax is stacked with quality left backs on first team level either.

That's maybe the strongest U17 team I've seen from Holland with this 97 team in 2014.

I would perceive Taylor to become another Van Bommel, who is a practical player with great work rate. I really hope he could show more as a captain and do his best in the final and lead the Dutch to win the trophy!!

Dutch women's U-17s lost to Germany in the finals today on PKs.:( Full time score was 1-1 and I think the PKs went eight rounds before deciding kick found the back of the net.

Yes it's too bad, because they played well leading up to the final. Nikita Tromp is a very promising little player!

Between last year's u17 winners, this year's finalists and next year where they should put in a strong team again the 01-03 group looks incredibly deep in terms of talent. I really liked Maatsen at the 6, and I think moving forward they should explore that more because Salah-Eddine to me looks like the best bet to stay at leftback. There are so many good talents as you mentioned though right now coming through the Oranje youth that it's not bad to have multiple players in the same position. I just think this current Euro u17 team benefits most from having Maatsen playing the DM.

Personally I think this team is better than last year's and next year's could be even better than this one -- and that's with Ihattaren and Gravenberch who are probably the two best players from the '02 year not there.

The Dutch wingers are back in style!!! Dilrosun and Danjuma Groeneveld are also in the same bracket. I am also intrigued by Mitchel van Bergen. 7 goals and 2 assists this season for Heerenveen, playing mostly as subs. Not the fastest player, but moves pretty smoothly.

I see malen as good back up for Depay . If not in a two man upfront, malen as an aux striker behind depay or malen up front and depay has deep lying no 2 . He was playing in bergwijn shadows but has significantly risen towards the end of the season scoring 5 goals in the last ten games. Not forgetting lammers here, lets see what van bommel does in the new season.

Im expecting bergwijn to be out gunned by the fellow wingers who are making their way up. A fit danjuma is a lock and he has already proven why. It only a matter of time when Stengs will break on that right wing and when he does he will send bergwijn in pecking order. Stengs is simply is more crafty than him.

Watch out for adekanye as well. He has agreed the move to lazio. Technically gifted left footed winger who can play on either side and you can see flashes of young robben in him.

El ghazi is also finishing of a strong season for aston villa who are in quest for promition in epl. They are in the play off final vs derby county, with the winner to play cardiff city in the decider.

Dilrosun, Kluivert and bergwijn and maybe chong. One whole season to go and who ever is in form and playing at competitive level should get the nod. For chong a loan move to bundasliga could be good option if he really wants to crack in NT. If he waits another season he might miss out. Im just wondering if bosz will be tempted to take him on loan if they qualify for CL.

No they won't. Bottom three in the EPL are automatically relegated, no playoff for the 18th place team. If Villa win, they are promoted. El Ghazi is too slow to be a winger.

  19. Out of fun (and a bit of malice:devilish:), dumping some, actually basins of water on on fire expectations of youth EC titles:

Hoe is het met de voormalig Europees kampioenen van Oranje onder 17?

Oranje onder 17 speelt morgen (17.30 uur) de EK-finale tegen de Italiaanse leeftijdsgenoten. Drie keer eerder (2011, 2012 en 2018) won Oranje onder 17 in de finale van een Europees kampioenschap. Wat is er gekomen van de spelers die in de finales van 2011 en 2012 de basisopstellingen vormden?

This article is quite disappointing. Too many Oranje youngsters couldn't make it at the high level despite winning the u17 EC.

Not really, this is pretty standard for youth NTs. If you go back and look at the U-21 team that won two in a row very few players went on to top flight careers.

  22. It's why I carenot much about Youth titles at all. The fact still stands that only when a kid plays with/against men you know whether he's cut from the right stuff or not. Everything else is just glorified practicing.

An added problem with the Dutch teams as we know is poaching from English clubs, players like Hoever and Maatsen are essentially in a lottery.
