I think the field of top 4 teams is pretty much set and we haven't even started the 4th week. What a bummer for some of the bottom feeders.

I dunno, I think Houston or Seattle could still squeak into that 4th spot. Washington, Orlando, and SBFC, on the other hand, are just battling it out for the top draft pick next year.

I wonder if the fact that the teams are now depleted of USWNT's players could somehow change things around a little... :cautious:

You may be right. I just feel like Seattle cannot get off the ground this season and Houston has a history of being mediocre, but they have a chance of squeaking into the top 4. Although, I'd put my money on Washington getting that 4th spot over either of those two. Portland has too much talent to not be in the top 4. If anything, the Royals, who are playing well, are perhaps one injury away from dropping out of the top 4.

You may be right, but it's not that many games to turn things around for any team.

That's a quite surprising amount of faith in Washington... There's no depth there at all. At least certainly not more than HOU or SEA have. o_O

"Not many games" - even if the UWSNT players somehow crash out of the group stage and get back to NWSL immediately, (as in literally fly back the night of the 20th for games on the 21st-23rd,) that's six weeks gone, or an entire quarter of the season. Add on at least one KO game and one weekend of rest and that's at least eight weeks gone, or a full third of the season.

07' 0-0 Rodriguez spins 270° cw away from DiBernardo's pressure at circle back mid-right, tries a long backpass switch left, Nagasato stretch-pokes it to Kerr at circle top. Kerr launches a 1-v-3 solo breakaway, just leads the pack to 16m arc right, shoots right foot slightly across mouth, Barnhart double-blocks at 6-top right and the defense clears. I think Kerr has some ace shot up her sleeve (or shinpads), and isn't showing it before the WWC :)

09' 0-0 Jónsdóttir passes down right touch for Bowen overlapping, to 4m. Cross on the run is too high for Rodriguez jumping at 6-top center, it bounces across to Maemone at 17m box left. Maemone snipes right instep for right 90, off crossbar 1/5 right, bounces out to box top mid-right and Gorden clears.

First time I've had issues with the stream buffering. It's happened 4 times so far this game.

33' 0-0 Utah left ck, to 6-top left, Kerr heads away to box top mid-left. LaBonta juggles high to self, Colaprico(!) outjumps her for a header clearance -- both of them are up for this one  Outlet pass to Kerr(!) up right touch, to 25m. Kerr crosses toward 14m center, poked away past arc top. K.Johnson runs on and tries timing the waist-high right roundhouse, but still hits it early and sends it way over.

34' 0-0 Chicago clears past arc top, Bowen collects and passes to Rodriguez at 15m center. Rodriguez spins ccw to face up, sidesteps left, shoots left foot but pulls it a bit too much, just wide right low. Both teams are getting some chances: Utah's RB Bowen is extremely aggressive getting forward (which puts them in a 3-4-3 vs. Kerr's counters), while Chicago occasionally lands a pinpoint longball.

40' 0-0 Bowen overlaps way up past 25m, turnover, Kerr counters vs. Utah's retreating back 3. Corsie times a lunge perfectly, smothers ball off Kerr's foot at 28m 6-left. Utah counter-counter, Boquete shoots from arc tangent right, blocked wide right.

42' 0-0 Boquete jumps straight up for a header at midfield mid-right, K.Johnson backs up and jumps with her, outheights her by a couple of inches and swings left elbow -- for balance? Elbow clocks Boquete's jaw, she goes down and stays on knees with some disorientation. Foul, straight red card on K.Johnson. Yes, that's probably a technique that must be weeded out of the game. Don't swing elbows high for balance. (Not really expecting either side to tweet a replay :coffee:)

    HT 0-0.

Straight red seems a bit harsh to me. It seemed more accidental, and if Boquete had jumped a bit higher it wouldn't have hit her in the face. But I'm not a ref, so...

54' 0-0 Boyd fk from own box top wide right, sailed to 30m center. Mautz outjumps S.Johnson facing ball, top-heads into Kerr's stride at 27m mid-right. Kerr drives through box top mid-right to 6-top 8-right, takes one more touch to 3m 7-right past Corsie's stretching slide, shoots right foot into Barnhart's chest at right post, over endline right. Good save, but Kerr closed her own window. Still not showing that hard shot into left 90 ;)

62' 0-0 Scott sends another long cross from ~arc top wide right to 12m 1/3 left, blocked to box top. Boquete settles at arc left, shoots right instep bend at right 90 -- not quite enough bend, wide right and high.

64' 0-0 Chicago subs in (1 of 3) #2 Nikki Stanton for #10 Vanessa DiBernardo.

66' 0-0 Boquete spins past Stanton in own 1/3, Stanton tugs her left shoulder from behind. Foul, yellow card on Stanton.

67' 0-0 Chicago subs in (2 of 3) #7 Michele Vasconcelos for #4 Alyssa Mautz.

74' 0-0 Boquete tightropes up left touch, runs through Short's arm-grabbing, gets past her and ref plays advantage. Stengel taps to Bowen coming up to 30m mid-right. Bowen touches to arc top mid-right, shoots hard off Wright's ribs, ball deflects down to 6-top center. Rodriguez just misses a sliding volley try, Boyd sprawls right and smothers ball. Good reaction on a point-blank no-touch when she had to anticipate every possible touch.

75' 0-0 Utah subs in (2 of 2) #15 Erika Tymrak for #24 Katie Stengel.

78' 0-0 Yellow card on Maemone.
80' 0-0 Maemone flicks right outstep away, Kerr slides late and makes contact with her foot. Foul, yellow card on Kerr.

81' 0-0 Kerr darts through 18m arc left, leaps through the blast doors and trips into box. Foul just outside the box.

82' 0-0 Boquete fk at 18m arc left, right foottop bend off crossbar 1/4 left, bounces straight out and cleared past box top. Chicago disrupt two passes, Utah collects at midfield. Tymrak(?) passes to 6m 6-left for Rodriguez unmarked, she goes down to right hip and tries a left scissor-volley, slices it way wide left. Offside.

84' 1-0 Scott threads a forward pass to Tymrak at circle right. Tymrak turns through circle top right, passes to 22m wide right for Bowen overlapping. Gorden chases inside-out, Jónsdóttir wins race by 1 shoe width, sliding one-touch ground cross to 12m 3-right. Rodriguez cuts left to right with inside position on Naughton, sliding one-touch volley across mouth rolls under Boyd's right glove, into left side netting low.

86' 1-0 Chicago subs in (3 of 3) #23 Brooke Elby for #5 Kathleen Naughton.

Time means nothing, it's missed matches that matter, IMO.
How many actual games will the USWNT players miss?
And what kind of affect on the standings/teams will these missing USWNT players make?

    90+3' (of +3') 1-0 Utah subs in (3 of 3) #46 Meghan Cox for #19 Michelle Maemone.

90+4' (of +3') 1-0 Utah left throw-in at own arc top, up left touch, Colaprico heads into near touch.

90+4' (of +3') 1-0 Short right throw-in at own box top, up right touch, Utah heads into near touch, and that's it.

FT 1-0. Utah is on pace for 72 points :alien:

Well that game didn't go how I expected, but at least I got a bonus point for predicting Utah's goal count.

I think Washington is playing better than expected.
I have been underwhelmed by Seattle so far this year.
Lastly, I don't trust Houston enough to put money on them.
    .
I'm really looking forward to tomorrow's match between the Reign and Spirit.

Utah as scored 3 goals and won three games and their opponents haven't scored yet. Not even Kerr. That's outstanding defense -- and a little bit (or a lot) of luck). I thought Desiree Scott had a good game.

Rookie Michelle Maemone is an unexpected find for Utah, drafted 23rd, but now has three starts at left back. She has said she didn't expect to be drafted and only put her name in the pot at the last minute.

I always like to see the experts proven wrong. All White Kit said that Utah drafting Maemone was an "unfortunate punchline." Well, if she never plays another minute, she's already done better than most third round draft picks.

I thought the red card given Katie Johnson was harsh -- but the ref had warned her at some length a few minutes earlier about a sloppy foul. Even so, the foul that got her the red card didn't look to me like a deliberate blow to the face.

I'm hoping to see Maria Sanchez replacing Johnson in the next match.

Not knowing all the circumstances, it is hard to believe Vero is not on Spain's NT for the WC.
She had a great game; made everybody better. She is already on my ballot for league MVP.
