I wonder how they’ll handle the schedule in the future. Pretty much have to play teams you are in direct competition with for playoff spots home and away but I also like that every team meets once each season. Not sure how you achieve that with 30 teams.
Increase of $50 million to $200 million for teams 28 and 29, with the fee for the 30th club not yet determined ($250 million?). So if they go past 30 teams expansion fees could get to $300 million for the 31st and 32nd teams.
If North Craolina is going to get an mls team now is the team time to get all your ducks in a row. NCFC or the Carolina Panthers, one of them needs to get it done. North Carolina need MLS. Good rivals for Nashville and Atlanta!
It would take 38 games with 10-team divisions. As a side note, 38 games also gets you home and away for a 32 team league with 4@8 team divisions. It also gets you home and away for a 20 team league[emoji12]
I had this wonderful idea for a 4 groups of 4 competition in 2010 with the top 2 in each group qualifying for the playoffs... My guess is a future with eventually a 4 conference setup.
how long after this announcement did the ..."OMG this is so stupid, they need to do pro/rel if they want people to take MLS seriously".... 2 posts on my facebook feed What if MLS is stupid ninja and just keeps adding and establishing teams and then breaks itself off into pro/rel ways down the line... thats a chunk of expansion teams all at once..gotta expand the spending budgets a bit (if theres money left from expansion fees) to get solid product on the field for all these teams
I always avoid the comments sections on FB or Twitter when announcements such as this are made. I have no desire to read the latest drivel from the pro/rel zealots and the simple-minded who claim that this is just a big Ponzi scheme.
MLS has now cemented itself as The Greatest League on Earth. Sure, many leagues Do it Better, and many will continue to Do it Better, but none of 'em can say they do it Larger! We are the Butterbean of Soccer! I am so freakin' proud...........
MLS can't quit expanding until FC Inter Real Topeka has made the scene. Or if you prefer, "The Dorothy's". That rivalry with Sporting FC KC, or if you prefer, "The Wizards", is to die for. Let's see any league on earth match our "Tornado Alley Derby"!
PHX I could see. Indy appears closest to having their stadium house in order and gives CBus and Chicago more local "rivals." Raleigh is possible but they're further away from realizing a stadium, while the ownership in Charlotte likely isn't appealing to MLS. I feel anyway.
there's a BIG gap in the southwest for MLS-- Phoenix has to be in the mix for #30, but Indy 11 have a list of ducks in a row -- and who the heck knows about detroit which has all the ducks except an acceptable Soccer Suitable Stadium i dont see it being san diego-- 5 cities from california in MLS just seems too far fetched
I think Columbus staying and Cincinnati arriving harm Indy's chances. There are now several teams in the immediate vicinity. You can't say that for Phoenix or North Carolina. Then add Detroit into the scenario, not to mention San Diego. My opinion is MLS would rather have Detroit than Indy. San Diego is something of a wildcard in my mind, given the two southern California teams (I think it's either Phoenix or San Diego, with the advantage to Phoenix). I could certainly be wrong, I just don't see that Indy provides more value than a number of the other competitors in terms of geographic footprint or national exposure.
There goes our bold Achilles, MLS. Sailing between the Scylla of Pro/Rel Zealotry, and the Charybdis of Simple Minded Big Ponzi Scheme, it finds safe haven in the Sea of Mediocrity..... and by gum golly, just make that Sea vast enough, with ever expanding bound, and then you never have to worry about sailing into more challenging waters....... The Gods are in awe of our ambition.
