I'd not heard of the 1951 match (that Ivan's referred to), but as I've only spent time around blue Sheffield - and that game was a helluva long time ago - I guess it's not surprising.

Based on my time hanging around south Yorkshire (and on the once brilliant OwlsAlive message board [RIP]), I'd say it's a tossup between the Wembley semi and the Boxing Day Massacre. Both are still referred to regularly by those old enough to have been there - you hear about them all the time.

In more recent times, the Owls 2-1 win at the Sty in '09 was huge. It was the first League double over them in 95 years (which I still find shocking). I've seen Wednesday beat them a few times since I started going over; but the reaction from Wednesdayites was for this one far more intense than any of the other wins. They had a 'beamback' at Hillsborough, where they put up a huge screen in front of the south stand, so folks who couldn't get away tickets could watch the game with their fellow fans. Have a look at Marcus Tudgay's winner:

I'll also toss in a 1-0 win in February of '12 - though it's magnitude was only realized in retrospect. With United well clear in the table and apparently cruising to promotion (from League One) the Derby win (after which manager and Wednesday legend Gary Megson was inexplicably sacked) kicked off an11-3-0 run to close the season, pipping United to second place, and dropping them into the playoffs, the final of which they lost on penalties. United had been, I think, eight points clear with a game or two in hand (or something like that - don't quote me) that Spring, but Wednesday began clawing them back in with that derby win in late February.

But in the end it's gonna be either Wembley or Boxing Day - take your pick.

Good shout @pookspur . That Wiki page could use some updating for sure.

I'm not sure if the 3-0 FA Cup win over Arsenal was mentioned in that Wiki article either. That was pretty cool.

Boxing Day & Wembley wins are usually the top two though.

the cup win v Arsenal a couple years back was, indeed, a great game. but loads of Wednesday fans bristle at how big a deal some folks make of it. it kind of shows how far Wednesday have fallen that their fans think of it as a legendary performance. for older fans, beating the big English clubs - Man U, Arsenal, etc. - was a not-infrequent occurance to be enjoyed, and even savored, but not celebrated like a trophy. they see Wednesday as worthy of celebrating cup finals - not fourth round League cup ties.

I remember when Wednesday were one of the best teams in England (the Johnny Harkes days), so I get it. But it's been a long time. The Arsenal game was brilliant. I'd've paid a lot to have been there.

    I'm not arguing that.
I'm just delighted we aren't losing every time out.
I said we'd be top 10 this year and I'm going to be happy with that.

fair enough. it beats losing, to be sure.

still, the upturn in form has meant an outside shot at the playoffs, and a 0-0 scoreline suggests a kind of play that might not be 'going for it'. I mean, I didn't see it and I don't know - maybe they were attacking like crazy. but a 2-2 draw would've implied a slightly more satisfying point than nil-nil, if that makes any sense.*

*and i'll grant that it may not.

    I agree.

But compared to how we started this season... I'm very happy.

Yes. If you win, you'll be 1 point behind Aston Villa. Of the four clubs in between, Derby is at 13th place Brentford, Middlesbrough is at 14th place Swansea, Nottingham is at Rotherham who's in the relegation zone by 1 point, and Preston hosts the Blades. 5th place Bristol is 1 point above Aston Villa. West Brom is 9 points above Bristol, and all of the top four will almost certainly get to at least the playoffs. 12th place Hull is 6 points behind Aston Villa, so half of the clubs have a chance at promotion. Brentford and Swansea are 10 points behind Aston Villa, so promotion isn't realistic.

on Monday I will be making my more-or-less annual pilgrimage to the birthplace of football, but for the first time since 2006, this trip will not include Sheffield Wednesday, the City of Sheffield, or even Yorkshire.

    :(

    sometimes things go wrong.

1-3 despite being level at 90'. by all accounts, Wednesday were the better side - particularly in the 2nd half.

that pretty much wraps it up, then. just finish strong and come out ready to go in the Fall. you have to think Wednesday will be among the promotion favorites next season, if Bruce has a half-decent Summer.

18 points left for us to have if we will just take them!

Anything can happen and we should have at least drawn yesterday...

    Anything...

many things cannot happen. Wednesday cannot get automatic promotion, nor can they be relegated. i cannot pull the Swedish woman sat next to me on the train from Nuneaton to Euston Station - never in a million years - however much i want to believe.

But ... a win at Leeds with one of Villa or Brizzle City dropping points (a draw would be even better, and things will stay interesting.
