In general, I don't like Zardes's pace in defending from the wing-forward position. JK started him there at the Netherlands; he struggled mightily in covering the fullback. But then the opponent would determine whether he'd be a good fit there.

That was pretty early on. But, yeah, the guy they were covering there is considered to be pretty good. In that case, Klinsmann was working Zardes in at the wing in a 4231. Problem is, you cant really give Zardes the ball as a forward out on the touch line in the attacking half. The ball doesn't go anywhere. That became most obvious in the disastrous 2015 GC He has to sit behind the front 3 and let the wing occupy the fullback so he can swing wide and cross the ball in if you want to use him out wide. That means another bang on the nail I've been hamerin' - Zardes in mid in a 433, not a 4231

Yeah, think his best fit is in 442. He's not really a wide-attacking midfielder. He's certainly not a lone striker.

He is just not playing good soccer anywhere on the field with the Galaxy. I watch the games man. This is more than a positional thing. He is very out of form with the Galaxy. Right now he is all effort an nothing else for the Galaxy, which has not been the case for the last three seasons.

    Look at Berbatov's signature

    The signature reads:
"Zardes is this generation's Dempsey, mark my words." MPNumber9-6/7/
    2016"

MP 9 was on to something there back on June 7, 2016.

The younger Dempsey was always a second striker type coming out of midfield so he could pick his spots (some people would call that a "poacher"). That's really what Zardes should be doing but Zardes has the added quality of passing out of the back and crossing the ball from wide areas. Somebody has to get through to him.

Zardes best position, fit, role, whatever for this team is on the couch at home.

He is not playing well in MLS, the idea that he is even in the picture right now is ridiculous. He has only ever been a super fringe talent when on his best form and we have not seen that form in ages.

I really don't see him on the roster for next year.

Weird how Twellman and Darke were going on and on about the Ecuadorian keeper making a hash out of the play. That ball deflected and just looped completely over him and dropped just under the cross bar. He almost go to it, but I can't see how you fault the keeper on that goal.

I’m not a huge fan of Zardes, but had Dempsey scored that goal there would have been less talk of the keeper’s play and more about guile and brilliance.

I recall CP had a similarly fluky game winner against Club Brugge and the word was more or less "you make your own luck."

Gyasi Zardes and Aaron Long are the only two players to start every U.S. match in 2019. And while Long could get switched out for Miazga against Chile, I would imagine that Zardes is going to start again.

Zardes and Long... Who would have guessed?

I dont think much of Zardes, Morris, Long or Bradley and only mildly like a few others. Until we face a better foe, Zardes can survive.

The thing I have not seen much, if any, talk about is the fact that we are not scoring goals. That team last night was bad and still it took a lucky crap goal to win. Zardes missed a sitter earlier (even if offsides was called) did Arriola too. That was about it. We cannot beat good teams like this... few shots generated, I truly hope that game has shown GB that Morris is done and should never be paired with Zardes. They are too much alike to be useful. The only reason Zardes is on this team is because GB was his coach. Period

That ball was up in the air for a long time. A keeper with reasonable footwork would have got to the ball with time to spare.

On a weird note, I watched the Spanish language feed and the announcers accused the USA of playing tiki-taka.

First time I’ve ever heard that accusation about a US team.

Absolutely- But Dempsey never misses that point blank shot that Zardes accidently squared to Arriola. (The one where Morris was called offsides).

Like it or not, Zardes makes things happen. If we had a consistent #9 to pair him with, he would find a way to score goals.

He is an unconventional player, but he often finds a way to end up where the action is.

Let's just say I might be the first one to discount anything Zardes does on the field as purely a chance related event, and even i would say the same thing if Deuce had scored that goal. That goal was as fluke as fluke can be. Doesn't matter who scored it. Probably should go down as an own goal as there was very little chance the initial shot was not going to be saved.

Not comparing them per se, but people said this A LOT about many of Super Pippo's goals too.

In "own goals", the ONLY question is, was it on target? If yes, it's not an own goal. That is the convention.

I know the rule but I've seen a lot of goal kicks that stood a better chance of going in the goal than that shot!

Out of Clint Dempsey's 189 professional goals, how many were deflected like that? Not a small deflection, but a long-range shot that took a massive deflection and still should've been saved?

If it's more than 5, I'll be surprised.

But the trajectory was initially very deceiving because, at first, it looked like the ball was going to soar over the crossbar and into the stands. Then by the time he realized it wasn't it was too late; the heavy topspin had it quickly dropping straight down behind him.

I'm not saying it was a completely unsavable shot. Just a very tricky one. And I've seen even more experienced keepers beaten by similar ones. Shilton v W. Germany in the 1990 WC comes to mind (at 0:20 seconds here):
