Voted for Bolsonaro last week and will do so again on the 28th. I spent the first few months of this year hopping around RS, Rio, and SP and life is just so depressing there because of incompetence and corruption.

13 days to go and Ibope just released a new poll with Bolsonaro ahead 59% vs 41%. Bolsonaro can't even go to the debates for another week due to his stabbing and emergency surgery. It's over.

To be honest, I have a hard time understanding or believing most of Bolsonaro's "plans" but its anything but PT/leftist idiots on my end at this point.

His flip-flopping on the privatization issue and promises of creating new "bolsa familia" programs makes me uneasy. As well as the clear lack of proposals on major issues such as crime/safety and the economy.

I did not like his "decimo terceiro" to bolsa-familia thing. I still remember when Marina Silva made the exact same promise in the last debate of 2014 and I hated her for it. But Bolsonaro has kept it real in so many other aspects that I'll let this one slide.

His privatization program is clear to me, he will keep communications, energy and minerals public . Military strategical mindset. Other businesses such as Airports will be privatized.

I bring cash and exchange it at the best rate from private money dealers. But you can also use your debit card and get a good exchange rate.

Whenever I go to Brazil, I use a credit card without foreign transaction fees.

Definitely do not walk around with tons of cash and if you know some locals, that helps as they will know what areas of whatever city you'll be at are safe. São Paulo has crime levels far higher than what I'm comfortable with; that said, there are plenty of sufficiently safe areas (to the extent you will see many barzinhos with tables and chairs lined up outside on the sidewalk as people drink and eat). As long as you know where to go and where to avoid, you will be fine.

I use CC where ever I feel safe using it (restaurants / legit shopping places). For day to day use I take dollars and exchange with somebody I know wanting to buy dollars or at a black market exchange place. Just make sure to take bills in good condition and also take a little more than you need because I've had them say some of my bills might have been counter fit.

Keep dollars where you're staying unless you're going to exchange it for Reais and if you have multiple CCs, leave some in the place you're staying as well. Don't carry all with you at one tie just in case.

A very good point. I'm actually willing to accept a lower exchange rate to help friends and relatives who can then attain USD at a more favorable exchange rate by doing what you described.

Yes, you will get good exchange rates with CC with no foreign transaction fees. You will get a better exchange rate changing cash through money brokers/black market. If you are changing cash, and you will be in Rio, I can provide you with the absolute best rate from a tourism store in Ipanema. They always give above the official rate.
Don't change your cash at Banks, or hotels or you will get a horrible exchange rate.

not an argument, I'm sure you don't have any. Feel free to pick apart the ideas. I wish I was wrong in regards to a lot of it. The IQ question haunted me when i discovered it.

Awesome stuff. I've never been that far up north. I speculate a lot of Brazilian immigrants in the U.S. who are from São Paulo or Rio de Janeiro and who arrived in America at a young age never went to those areas. I myself have yet to visit the northeast. There are absolutely beautiful beaches there.

As said before, take precautions and be safe, but do have a great time, and tell us how you like it.

You have to be careful exchanging money at any non-traditional places. If they see you are a gringo, they will get you with some of their tricks. Depending on where you go (not RJ or SP), it may be more difficult to do what everyone else suggested. I just use TransferWise or Xoom depending on the rates and transfer money over to one of my relative's accounts or in-law's accounts and have them retrieve it from the ATM.

Current standard exchange rate on 1.5K is 5,900 Reais today, so you're not too far off. See below link. I actually get about 3pct above market currency in the underground.
