Asian Cup: Stephan Schrock scores historic goal but PH Azkals bow out

A promising campaign ended in heartbreak for the Philippines as the Azkals suffered a 3-1 defeat to Kyrgyzstan last Wednesday night that ended their hopes of reaching the next round of the AFC Asian Cup at Rashid Stadium here.

Stephan Schrock scored a historic first goal for the country in the competition second half but it turned out to be a late consolation for the Azkals whose campaign started on a positive note with a fighting performance in the 0-1 defeat to South Korea.

Vitalij Lux’s hattrick ensured maximum points for Kyrgyzstan which is in a strong position to reach the next round.
The Azkals entered the match brimming with confidence especially after a win would have given them an opportunity to advance.

But Kyrgyzstan put the Azkals under pressure right from the start with Michael Falkesgaard needing to come up with a couple of big saves early before Vitalij struck to open the scoring in the 23rd minute.

Vitalij rifled home another quality finish six minutes into the second half, before grabbing his hattrick by firing into an empty net.
Schrock’s free kick gave the Filipino gallery something to cheer about in the 81st minute and another chance for the Azkals to trim the deficit went begging moments later when Patrick Reichelt lashed his effort wide.

I have always been realistic about our chances, but there is nothing wrong on hoping that we do well. That is what being a fan is all about. Our players tried but it just wasn't meant to be this time. It still doesn't diminish the fact that we made the finals of the Asian Cup for the very first time.

There will be other chances. WC qualifying will start soon enough. My guess is though is that the short term contract given to Coach Ericsson will not be renewed. I don't think they can afford it and considering that the team lost its last 5 consecutive matches, it might be hard to justify the expense renewing it.

The results are depressing at the moment but fortunately there is still Pacquaio's fight this weekend to look forward to. Nothing like another victory for the Pacman to pick you up. Apparently Mayweather will be at ringside to observe the proceedings, so if Manny wins convincingly, another 9 figure rematch sometime in the summer will probably be in the offing.

I don't got a problem but clearly you do. You're the one who's still on a rampage from Friday after the Philippines failed to meet your retarded expectations!

Also the fact you keep calling me "WEE_ViLL14" over and over again makes you the complete knob that you are thinking you're so clever from doing so! LOL!!! But no worries, like I said, if it makes you feel superior and helps you sleep at night. You go right on ahead.

Medication? LOL! You're the deluded old fart here who admitted to being a troll and still hasn't gotten over being called out from almost a week ago! LOL!!!! Let me guess, you're also gonna go on a rampage after the defeat to Kyrgyzstan because they ended up losing by more goals than you expected?!

Get a grip and get over yourself because everyone else already has!!

Hoping your team does well and actually expecting a specific result are two completely different things! More so expecting a specific result that isn't realistic when there isn't anything on cards that would make it realistic!

Stop being the debbie downer man. It is one thing to be realistic. It is quite another to be constantly so negative.

"Debbie Downer is a name for someone who is constantly making others feel bad or dampening the mood of a group with negative comments."

Nobody wants to be around a debbie downer.

I'm stating fact and I was saying it in a general sense! Clearly you've got comprehension issues just like a certain other member here!

If you were actually reading posts, then you would know that I actually said before the tournament that if the Philippines could keep Korea and China to no more than four goals which they did (1-0 & 3-0 respectively), then it would be a job well done and they'd be lucky to get a draw with Kyrgyzstan. That's being optimistic and realistic!

So I don't know what debbie downer bs you're trying to say. And yes I know what it is. That's just you being you again making it seem you're on a higher footing by trying to define a term you used. It's such a goody-two-shoes type of a move. Would you like for me to define that term for you??

Oh I have known you quite awhile. I am sure everyone here can relate. The term fits you like a sleeve. Nothing like a comment from you to brighten(sarcastically) or more accurately cast a shadow on everyone's day.

Try to smile and brighten up every once in awhile. You would be amazed how good it feels.

I will be shocked if the national team keeps him for a couple more months. I expect Sven Goran to step down by next week and the PNT to find a suitable replacement, maybe hopefully a Dooley-type coach or someone who understands the team’s style of play that got them qualified in the Asian Cup.

I hate saying this but WHAT IF the Azkals kept Dooley for at least through the Asian Cup campaign instead of hiring Sven. I think Dooley’s tactics and decision making would be better. It’s just my opinion.

And I've known you quite a while as well! Others know you just as well from their time getting first hand experience at you being Mr. Moderator on another forum and your goody-goody type of posting and moderating. That term fits YOU just like sleeve!

Try and see the bigger picture once in a while and not just what you feel like seeing/hearing just to fit your own narrative. You would be amazed how beautiful it really is!

Look. If you're actually nice to me or anyone else in this forum, I will actually pay a girl to go out on a date with you. Better yet, if you actually write something nice about the Azkals, I'll buy you a pair of boots, so you can actually learn how to play football.

I think the Azkals should hire WEE_ViLL14 as coach. He can just yell at the players all day long, while he's on his phone posting replies to this forum.

Dooley's approach was better. From the beginning, he always included the local players and looked to the future. For him, it was obvious this would take time. I don't think he cared too much about the lack of media. He seemed to be more interested in grassroots development.

The only thing Palami got out of hiring SGE was the international media coverage. Losing all those games didn't help the Azkals obviously, but I guess bad press is better than no press.

Goodbye with a goal? Schrock hints at Azkals retirement

If it was his final match wearing the Philippines kit, then Stephan Schrock made sure it was a memorable one—even though it ended in defeat in the AFC Asian Cup here.

The 32-year-old Schrock made history by scoring the country’s first ever goal in the competition in the second half of a 3-1 defeat to Kyrgyzstan on Wednesday night at Rashid Stadium here.

But the dynamic midfielder later hinted at retirement from the national team after the Azkals bowed out in the most prestigious competition in the continent.

“I feel like that was my final game for the Azkals,” Schrock told the Inquirer on Thursday.

“I had it in my mind to retire from (the national team) after this tournament because I’m 32 and I feel the body gets more aged with every major tournament. We have another long season ahead with Ceres-Negros. We will hardly get a break. I have a family as well and I wanted to see them more often than in the past three months.”

When Schrock floated in a free kick inside the area late in the second half, he was hoping that a teammate will redirect it on target.

Instead, Kyrgyzstan goalkeeper Kuzman Kadyrbekov, worried that Azkals striker Javier Patino might be able to make contact on the delivery, misjudged the flight of the ball, allowing Schrock’s free kick to bounce inside the six-yard box and into the roof of the net.

There was hardly any celebration from the Azkals, who were already trailing, 3-nil, before Schrock’s strike, although the goal was greeted by a loud roar from the Filipino gallery.

“Today, I realized more how historic that goal was actually because yesterday I was only thinking about getting two more (goals),” said Schrock, who came out of international retirement a few months ago.

“If I could change it, I would rather win and have someone else score for the Philippines.”

Azkals boss to make sure PH will return to continental tournament

By: Cedelf P. Tupas - Reporter

DUBAI—Whether it’s financial support or emotional attachment, perhaps no other person has invested on the Philippines men’s national team in its quest for international glory than Dan Palami.
That’s why the long-time Azkals manager was also quick to take responsibility on the team’s inability to reach the knockout round of the AFC Asian Cup here.

The Azkals lost all three matches in their group against higher-ranked foes, but a strong performance in the 1-0 defeat South Korea and a first-ever goal by Stephan Schrock in the competition will be among the positives that can be taken away from their debut in the continental showpiece event.
“The thing for me as a manager, I felt that we had actually a chance to get out of the group,” Palami said. “Maybe there were some other things that the management or the coaching staff could have done in order for us to get out of it, but we have to accept the result.”

Palami has been bankrolling the squad’s campaign along with the Philippine Football Federation for close to a decade. And a first-ever appearance in the Asian Cup remains the biggest achievement for the country in the sport.
“We’re happy and privileged to be part of this tournament, but we want to make sure that this won’t be the last time we join this tournament,” Palami said. “Our Under-22, Under-23 and senior teams will progress even further in the coming years.”
Palami hired Swedish coach Sven-Goran Eriksson for the AFF Suzuki Cup and the Asian Cup, and the former England mentor managed to lead the Azkals to two wins, two draws and five defeats.
Football director Scott Cooper, who lacked the coaching badges to handle the squad in a major tournament like the Asian Cup but spearheaded the start of the preparations until Eriksson took charge, will remain with the team.
“Coach Sven’s engagement ends in this tournament,” Palami said. “Meanwhile, we have our football director Scott Cooper taking the reins in the senior team as well as preparing for Under-22 and Under-23 tournament. It is going to be exciting times in the next months.”
The Under-22 side will see action in the Southeast Asian Games that will be hosted by the Philippines late in the year, while the Azkals are set to join the next cycle of World Cup qualifying

    https://sports.inquirer.net/335114/...eturn-to-continental-tournament#ixzz5d4ESs9Yw

This is what I thought all along they were going to do. They were going to give the reins to Coach Cooper after this tournament. Nice to hear that they are also planning to have him coach the U22 side to the SEA games.

Nice win by 40 y/o 5'6" Pacquaio this weekend. It helped picked me up after the losses in the Asian Cup. He is not as fast as he used to be(he fights more flat footed now at this point in his career) but still good enough to be beat most of the young guys in his division.

I think he is still good enough to be competitive against the young guns in the deepest division(welterweight) in boxing(champions Spence, Crawford, Thurman, Porter, Garcia, etc.). If Mayweather doesn't come out of retirement to challenge him, I would like to see him fight WBA super champion Keith Thurman next.

As for the rest, I am not sure at his age, if he can beat the top 2 champions in the welterweight division: Spence and Crawford(especially the tall and skilled 5'11" Spence who really should be fighting in a heavier weight division), although if he beats the rest, I would like to see him try and add to his legacy as an all time great by fighting those guys too.

I'm not too excited about watching our youth. They're absolutely horrible and embarrassing to watch at times. It's almost as if they have to start from scratch with the basic skills. I can't even finish the full international matches I catch on YouTube because the kids are just dreadful. They can't even do simple wall passes, don't know how to run off the ball, have a bad habit of overdribbling and then lose the ball in the most dangerous spots on the pitch ... usually in their own defensive third. The tactical intelligence is just non existent. I see this at every youth level. How they score goals in these matches is beyond me. This is our future. We are in serious trouble.

And we are still relying on the diaspora to lift the level of the domestic game? We are running out of options within that demographic. The local kids need to start showing some signs of development. It would be nice to get past the "bambino" level eventually ... especially if it's the Under 20s playing.

Philippine Premier League revamps club football

    by Beatrice Go

The PPL is a new entity, it’s a rebirth, it's a reboot,' says PPL commissioner Bernie Sumayao

MANILA, Philippines – The country's club football scene looks for a fresh start with the launch of the Philippine Premier League (PPL).
PPL commissioner Bernie Sumayao laid down his plans for the league that is targeted to start at the end of March 2019.

"The PPL is a new entity, it’s a rebirth, it's a reboot," said Sumayao in a press conference on Wednesday, January 23.
"We don’t have any political agenda, we don’t have any financial agenda. Our agenda is to be able to reach the same level as what we see around today – that means the other leagues around the region."
The league will be adapting a triple round-robin format where each leg will play 27 matches that will be in accordance with Asian Football Confederation (AFC) rules of having a club play minimum of 25 matches in a football leg to qualify for the AFC Cup.
PPL will also retain the Copa Paulino Alcantara where the teams will be divided into two groups and the finalists will face each other for a slot in the AFC Cup.

The 2019 football season is slated to end on December 7.
    Interested clubs
Eleven clubs have signified interest, but the target is to have 8 clubs participating for this year.
These include the defunct Philippines Football League (PFL) champion Ceres Negros, inaugural Copa Paulino Alcantara titlist Kaya-Iloilo, Stallion Laguna, Green Archers United Globe and Philippine Air Force.
"We are still in the process of putting together all the documentation and by the 15th of February, we will be able to make the announcement on the final list," said Sumayao.
The teams will also be evaluated by their financial viability in order to sustain their operational expenses.
According to Sumayao, instead of a franchise scheme, teams will pay an annual registration fee that will be a fraction of the cost from the last two years.
The league is also alleviating additional costs for teams by doing away with the home-and-away format of the PFL.
Instead, the triple round-robin league will have matches played in 3 to 4 grounds in Metro Manila. The University of Makati, with a new artificial turf, will be one of the main venues.
But the league still intends to hold centralized matches in provinces, possibily in the third leg of the season.
"The centralized league, our idea is to have them sponsored. Someone can sponsor the hotels, the accommodations, so the financial burden is lesser for the teams," said Sumayao.
"Basically they (the teams) only have to pay for the players’ salaries if we go for the centralized games."
    Creating the 'fan experience'
The PPL will be launching a series of activations as they will be prioritizing fan engagement for Philippine football.
"We want to increase fan engagement that is because the fans here – the long suffering fans of Philippine football – there are a lot of frustrations on their part," lamented Sumayao.
"So in my own way, I thought about making that commitment to see where we can bring it, what level we can bring it, and bring it the resources that we have in order for [this development to happen], so to ease the frustration among our fans."
In order to target the younger audiences, the PPL looks to partner with music companies to attract the fans to the football venue – a strategy that has been proven to work in certain markets.
The enforcement of centralized matches will also pave the way for the PPL to organize event activations in the provinces.
"For example, on our third leg, we will hold it in a province like Cebu or Iloilo then we’ll have an actual event there for a couple of weeks. All the matches will be played in that specific location and that will become a massive community that we’ll have concerts, we will have fairs, we will have activations, fan engagement, we have players meet and greet," explained Sumayao.
"All these ideas put together will create a highly festive event in a particular area. And that’s what we really need to encourage to get people engaged in football."
With football events being held across the Philippines, the PPL and the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) are looking to collaborate with local government units (LGUs) to boost the country's grassroots program.
Fans can also tune in to PPL games on 5 Plus where the games will be shown live every Saturday from 7 pm to 9 pm.
With a new team handling the efforts to grow Philippine club football, the long term goal is to establish a multi-tier football league system in the country. – Rappler.com

Schrock optimistic of Ceres-Negros chances vs. Yangon Utd in AFC Champions League

Ceres-Negros will open their campaign in the AFC Champions League 2019 preliminaries against Yangon United of Myanmar on Feb. 5 at the Panaad Park and Sports Stadium.
During the team’s visit and press conference Thursday at the Bacolod City National High School, Ceres’ star midfielder Stephan Schrock expressed his optimism that the Busmen will prevail over the visitors from Myanmar.
“I’m very confident that we will win. We’re very grateful to represent the city,” Schrock said.
“We have very good additions, (replacing) the veterans who left, and the team’s mindset is always winning,” he added.
Last month, Patrick Reichelt, who played for Ceres-Negros for five years, left the team, along with fellow veteran Manny Ott and Spanish goalkeeper Toni Doblas. The team also released defender Jerry Barbasao, who joined the team last year.
Replacing their spots in the team are keeper Ronilio Bayan Jr., defenders Alvaro Silva and Dennis Villanueva, and midfielders Miguel Tanton, Angelo Marasigan and Dylan de Bruycker.
Echoing Schrock’s optimism, Ceres-Negros assistant coach Ian Treyes said the team is highly-motivated to face Yangon Unted.
“The adjustment with the new players is in the system. Each of us is 100 percent focused on this game,” Treyes said.
A win against Yangon United will allow Ceres to advance against Chiangrai United of Thailand in the second stage of the preliminaries.*

The only thing that will prevent Ceres from winning this match is overconfidence. They've had quite a few players come and go just in the past few years alone, but their new roster additions tend to assimilate rather quickly. I'm really happy to see that Alvaro Silva is finally playing in the Philippines. He'll definitely add strength to a backline that includes "Super," who I'm surprised, hasn't left the club yet. Good for Silva. If I'm correct, Alvaro's Filipino grandparent is from Iloilo, or at least Bisayan. Correct me, if I'm wrong. I wish them the best.

Yangon ends Ceres' 2019 AFC Champions League bid

    by Beatrice Go

MANILA, Philippines – Myanmar's Yangon United denied Ceres-Negros of a 2019 AFC Champions League berth early in the preliminaries with a 2-1 win on Tuesday, February 5, at the Pana-ad Park and Stadium in Bacolod.
Yangon advances to the second preliminary round of Asia's elite club football tournament to face Chiang Rai United on Tuesday, February 12.

Even with new additions midfielder Miguel Tanton and Alvaro Silva, the Bacolod-based squad failed to conquer the visiting team which it defeated in the 2018 AFC Cup Zonal semifinal.
Ceres-Negros will represent the Philippines in the 2019 AFC Cup together with Kaya-Iloilo FC.
Yangon opened the floodgates as Brazilian midfielder Vinicius de Oliveira fired a free kick from the edge of the box toward the bottom-left corner in the 28th minute of the game.
After Ceres dodged a bullet for the Myanmar National League champion to double the lead, captain Stephan Schrock scored off a back heel in the 44th minute to equalize at 1-1, thanks to an assist by Martin Steuble.
The Burmese club halted the home side's momentum in the second half as Kaung Htet Soe came up with a close-range strike to take the lead, 2-1, in the 58th minute.

OJ Porteria had the best chances to knot the scoreline in the second half but his first attempt was saved by Yangon keeper Kyaw Zin Htet in the 68th minute, and his strike off a rebound was denied by the crossbar in the 72nd minute. – Rappler.com

Quite sad, given the stadium was packed. Bienvenido Maranon, one of their top goalscorers, came on as a sub. I still can't figure out if he was injured or if he sat the bench due to a tactical change. If he had played the whole match, it would have made a huge difference because he has been their most consistent goal scorer in previous seasons. OJ Porteria, with all his flashy style, should be contributing more offensively, but goals always seem to elude him. The free kick goal Yangon scored was pretty weak. I'm quite shocked it made it through the wall. Took a funny bounce and beat Muller. Ceres Spanish backline is playing together for the first time, so it did look a bit disjointed at times. Well, at least, they still have the AFC Cup.

Off topic, also the Gilas basketball team has qualified for the FIBA World Cup. They barely made it on the last day and needed Lebanon to lose. I think most of the players on the Filipino team are still suspended from the fights with Australia last summer.

They clinched the spot when S Korea defeated Lebanon, but Gilas later cemented it by defeating Kazakhstan. As usual they left it to the last game in the qualifiers to clinch it. All the players suspended from Australia match have served their suspensions.

The U19 team is also participating in the Fiba Under 19 Basketball World Cup and had a tough draw in a group that included Argentina, Russia and Greece. This is the first time a Philippine team will field a local born player in the World Cup who is above 7' tall in 7'2" Kai Sotto.
