Dream debut for him. No reason he can’t be full time starter the rest of the season.

Impressive. Quick strong and smart. Exactly what you want from a 6.

    They're not using a DM, it's a typical flat 4-4-2.

Really liked what I saw from him. Great quickness and awareness. Seemed to fit in well with what Leipzig was doing.

When was the last time we had Yank on Yank action when both of our guys played the full 90?

OK, I couldn't tell if Lainer or someone had dropped back next to him or not.

    what an excellent debut ....

    just to recap:

    19 years old
    starts
    90 minutes
    on the road
regular Bundesliga match in pursuit of the top four slotting

this is a statement of confidence of him by his coach

I noticed that he did not seem to slow down or tire till minute 87

he made a couple of errant passes but all in all his athleticism, game thinking, anticipation, and physicality were excellent.

with him and Mckennie anchoring our midfield in the future (as long as they are healthy - knock on wood) that is a very strong pairing.

    Bright future.

You know Bradley and Trapp are anchoring that midfield, right?

I really do like your sense of humor.

    : - )

That is like saying I really like that Gremlin and Pinto in the driveway when you have a Porsche and Lotus in the garage.

    defense - excellent.

passing - very good. a few forward passes missed their mark, but I won't dwell on them. (he'll improve I'm sure. he's clearly prepared to put the work in. but even after he becomes ngolo kante, he'll still miss a few of those.)

it's the nature of the game.

forward passes by world class players miss their mark in top leagues every week.

Thanks for ruining a great thread about a promising Yank Abroad.

Please take your stunted grievance politics somewhere else.

His comment would have been very apt in England in the 80s and 90s, when black players were very stigmatized, but not much in the global soccer place today

If I was going to quibble, I'd say he did demonstrate some willingness to try the hard pass on occasion. Late in the game there was the lofted diagonal pass that he connected on today (and a couple similar ones in his friendly appearance) suggest that he has some capability of delivering a weighted ball. That might be an easier one for him to get good at than a shorter one up the gut in traffic. There are passes on overlapping runs he might want to perfect, too. Players who can deliver defense-unlocking interior passes are in short supply at every level of the US game. He showed some flashes of passing ability with the Red Bulls, enough to suggest more to come, but he's so darn useful in that deeper lying role that he doesn't often get the chance to show what he can do.
