Who will qualify for the 2019 CWC? (Host: Qatar)

    [IMG][IMG]

    UEFA: Round-of-16
    CONMEBOL: Not Started
    CONCACAF: Not Started
    AFC: Not Started
    CAF: Group Stage
    OFC: Not Started
    Host: Qatar Stars League

    Random Thoughts:
    • The host will be picked in the FIFA Council meeting on 15 March 2019 in Miami.
    • The Copa Libertadores now has a single match final. The first will be in Santiago, Chile.
    • The Copa Libertadores no longer has a name sponsor (new strategy?)
    • The CAF Champions League is aligning its schedule with UEFA. This is a transition edition.
    • The CONCACAF Champions League has a new competition logo.

So the CAF is deliberately moving away from having a CL winner right before the CWC...curious.

I imagine this is primarily done to align the club competitions with the new summer schedule for the CAF Nations Cup. Starting this year. Assuming they can choose a host by then.

How do we know there is going to be a FIFA Club World Cup in 2019. I don't see one scheduled. I thought FIFA was instead trying to move to a bigger tournament held every 4 years, starting in 2021.

The 2017 and 2018 Club World Cup hosting application was in February 2014, and awarded in March 2015. Did the process to host 2019 start?

We don't know for certain that it will happen. There has been no host bidding process but the easy fix is just to give it to China, home of "presenting partners" Alibaba until 2022. Documents leaked earlier pertaining to the proposed 2021 expansion did show a 2019 and 2020 edition, so until we are told there isn't one we will track qualification as usual.

The least you can do is bug the room.

Let's start with the CAF Champions League. Remember Angola's Primeiro de Agosto? Semifinalists last year? Out in the preliminary round against Congo's AS Otôho. Also not represented once again in the group stage is Sudan with both of its flagship clubs, Al Hilal and Al Merrikh, failing in qualifying. What's going on with those two?

I don't know, I actually find that punishment too harsh. Why not just give them a multiple-game empty stadium sanction?

In other news, CONCACAF has changed the qualifying format of the 2020 CCL:

It is now safe to say that the CONCACAF League is very much part of the CCL fabric.

I like the change. In the current format Concacaf League clubs had to advance 4 rounds to make the CCL. It was like if UEFA made all champions who weren't from leagues good enough to start in the Group Stage have to go through 4 qualifying rounds. In reality, clubs like Basel, Red Bull Salzburg, Olympiakos, and Dinamo Zagreb start in later qualifying rounds than champions of the bottom leagues.

I don't mind the change, but it does seem like CONCACAF president Montagliani is really going out of his way to prop up the new Canadian Premier League.

Given what Concacaf did to Ottawa? Yeah, absolutely.

...OTOH, I can't really blame Montagliani: it's ridiculous that Canada has gone so long without its own league.

The man literally turned the Canadian program around on his own in one mandate. He changed to the "old boys club" mentality where they were comfortable being paid doing nothing, using decades of indifference towards the sport.

A league was what was needed to advance Canadian Soccer and divorcing the USSF. Some might not like his style but it was way overdue

    The CONCACAF quarterfinals are set:

CF Monterrey (Mexico) - Atlanta United (USA)
CA Independiente (Panama) - Sporting KC (USA)
Houston Dynamo (USA) - Tigres UANL (Mexico)
NY Red Bulls (USA) - Santos Laguna (Mexico)

2018 finalists Toronto and Liga MX rep Toluca faced embarrassing defeats in the R16 to Independiente and Sporting respectively. Atlanta managed to turn it around against Costa Rican club Herediano who seemingly always gets a good result at home and then collapses on the road. Atlanta and Independiente are both making their debut this year in CONCACAF club football.

Elsewhere, AFC qualifying is complete and the group stage is set to commence next week. There will be no ACL football at Dubai's brand new football ground (Maktoum Stadium) since Al Nasr couldn't get the job done in a single leg qualifier at home.

Copa Libertadores qualifying is also done and Sao Paulo and Atletico Nacional failed at this hurdle.
