Well, just when you thought it couldn't get any worse...Moussa Sissoko will be out a month with a hamstring injury, which means with Dier and Wanyama still out and Dembele off to China, our central midfield options are Harry Winks and Oliver Skipp.
Zombie thread had me very nervous for a moment. Say the post above Golara and thought Son was injured too.
I don't know that he's done it for us, but I seem to remember reading that Foyth has played some in midfield.
He has, briefly in the Wolves game at Molineux, but only after he had daftly conceded 2 penalties. Poch brought on Sanchez for the final 10 minutes and pushed Foyth into midfield. The irony was that Sanchez had barely been on the pitch when he pulled down a Wolves player in the box right in front of Mike Dean, but just like Sunday, "he never saw it"...
We have the option of going 4-3-3, a bit like Man City do with De Bruyne and David Silva playing as a pair of 8/10 hybrids. Eriksen and Dele are undoubtedly attacking mids rather than orthodox central players, but neither is lacking in workrate. Those two flanking Winks as a sitting midfielder, with Lamela and Lucas either side of Llorente. It's the lack of options to change things that worries me rather than the starting 11. It's easy to forget that Llorente is a very good centre forward in his own right - Bilbao, Juventus and the excellent form he showed at Swansea. He's only ever had short, fragmented turns in our team but when he's started in cup games he's had and taken chances well.
Too bad Jermain Defoe was loaned out to Rangers. We could have reacquired him and Peter Crouch, who is still playing at Stoke, and recreated the "Little & Large" partenership of the Harry Redknapp days - "We're down to bare bones..."
I think "Benty" is still on Derby's books. There you go Daniel Levy, go out and get Crouchie and Benty and our striker problems are solved!
On a positive note, Sissoko's injury is not as bad as originally feared, but he will most likely miss the Fulham match.
Sissoko, Moura and Wanyama are ruled out for the match Sunday. Dier returns to the bench. Kane, Son and Moura have combined to score 28 of our 46 goals. If we finish the week in 3rd in the league and still in both domestic cup competitions, I will nominate Poch for sainthood.
Kane, injured Alli, injured Sissoko, injured Son, absent Dembele, sadly gone Dier coming back now is huge for us. With the quality of our centre backs it allows us to play the 3 at the back with Winks in his more natural centre midfield role, rather than the holding mid position he's been asked to play recently. A front 3 of Eriksen behind Llorente and either Lamela or Lucas Moura is still very decent quality. We can still do this, ride out a rough patch with injuries. Harry Winks has stepped up big time btw. Not just the late goal yesterday, but he really has impressed.
Said differently, 22 of our 48 goals are still available. And, we never need more than 1 more than the other team.
Deli confirmed out until March. This is all on Daniel Levy, his naive transfer strategy of signing nobody, considering 9 of our starting XI were involved in the WC until the final weekend, is biting us in the butt. Because of this, the manager was forced to play all of our top players at the start of the season when they needed to be rested and now we see the consequences.
The word on the street is that our transfer strategy has more to do with Poch wanting particular players that fit his system and less with finances. Therefore, if we don't buy anyone, it will be because Poch doesn't think they're better than we already have. I hope that changes because quite frankly, we need more first team level players. One only needs to look at the bench on Sunday to see that.
Whatever the policy, it was naive and has proven to be costly. Tomorrow, we will have a bunch of teenagers on the bench at Stamford Bridge. That shouldn' t be happening with a team that's been playing the last 3 seasons in teh CL.
