To go back to the original subject...how many of you had detailed disussions about evolution vs. creation, thermodynamics, school vouchers and humanity in general with your co-workers. Probably not too many and that's part of the problem. Workplace conversations usually don't go beyond weather and sports (gridiron, basketball, baseball).

I meant to post this under "mind numbing masses"...oh well. It deserves its own thread. In my last job I unofficially held the title of resident geek (for soccer and intellectual "stuff").

I don't talk any religion or politics at work, but I talk plenty of soccer. I've been getting lots of converts too. I haven't gone to a Rapids game this year without bringing some friends along and I've attended every home game. I should probably refrain from talking religion and politics in this forum, too. I don't seem to be making many friends.

If they went any deeper some people would find ways to sabotage the careers of anyone who didn't buy into their dogma. You must live in an enlightened region. Do you think the average John Doe is ready for conversations that may contradict what they've been told all their lives?

This thread was getting lonely at the end of the forum list.

What do I talk about with my coworkers?

How low-rent the Trump Appointees are, and how much fun it is going to be to just look at them when he goes. Like they can read our minds: "D.C. is a small town. That Trump Stink is never coming off. Now get the fvck out." LOL

When I was in the workforce one of the outfits I was employed by used to have an "Attitude Adjustment Hour" every Thurs after work. A lot of bigwigs attended and the booze flowed freely. I always nursed one drink while most everyone else got sloshed so it was a great way to provide retribution to those who pithed me off during the week.

Ps...I think I repped a post that was older than the kid from Md.

Sorry for taking 15 years to reply. Mostly we discuss thermodynamics. School vouchers and humanity in general, not so much.

We also discuss books -- at least a half dozen co-workers picked up "Bad Blood" about Theranos after someone recommended it. One of the best books of 2018 IMHO.

We mostly discuss how shitty senior management is and why our stock price never moves. :D

Also sports and others discuss This Is Us which I've never watched. A person next to me recently went to a ...JFC...Billy Joel concert at Madison Square Garden.

Unlike when this thread started, I discuss soccer on a regular basis with a handful of people at work who watch matches.

And rarely politics. Which is why nearly all my bigsoccer time is spent down here in these fora, and not in the ASR (Actual Soccer Related) areas.

Like Cascarinos Pizza, rather than "humanity in general" we discuss specific branches of the species. Mainly those who play, coach, and officiate soccer at the higher levels, as well as, more locally, various administrators who suck at their jobs.

The story is fascinating. Holmes is a complete sociopath, and too many people were consumed with FOMO.

And the board never understood or really tried to look into the technology of what they were trying to do.

Hopefully she will spend many, many, years in prison.

I highly recommend the book. I recently watched the Fyrefest documentary as well and the people who usually attempt to pull off the con have no shame.

When I first entered corporate America in the 90s, a bunch of us 20-something guys had an email group. A while back I took a look at some of the funnier ones. OMG we were dirty & sarcastic AF. Guess nobody ever considered we could be monitored by IT or mgmt.

It's worth checking out the interviews on YouTube with Carreyrou. fascinating stuff. You should also check out the interviews with Jim Cramer. Makes the book come alive.

This is possibly the most necro bump ever - rep for relevance too.

This is the main reason I do not give work email addresses out to my friend group anymore.

My favourite was signing people up for faith based newsletters. Nothing quite like "Daily Baptist Affirmation Newsletter" to brighten people's day.

    Eek!

Someone on P&CE mentioned that at their company they do handholding prayers before dept. meetings. Meetings are awful enough. I couldn't imagine injecting religion into it.

I've been at clients who have prayer before meetings - awkward silence = being respectful - but the signing peeps up for various newsletters was pure trolling.

Hey....my experience was very similar. When I entered corporate America in the 60's a bunch of us 20 something guys in the mail room used to write memos to each other. Of course we made sure to keep the carbon copies in the event there was a mole in the group. If one wanted to reach a larger audience we fired up the Mimeograph machine. :)
