Time to start a new thread for 2019. The link for the 2018 thread can be found at Stanford University 2018 [R] from gostanford.com: FIVE TO THE FARM Stanford announces Class of 2023 Welcome to The Farm
How is Wesley's recovery coming along? What do you think line-ups are going to look like (assuming everyone is healthy...)?
Impressive indeed, but imo she was much better as a freshman and probably should have won last year, not this year.
Congratulations to the Stanford players drafted by the NWSL 1st overall pick - Tierna Davidson [Chicago] 3 - Jordan DiBiasi [Washington] 7 - Tegan McGrady [Washington] 19 - Kyra Carusa [Sky Blue] DiBiasi and McGrady are selected by Washington, who also selected Andi Sullivan 1st overall in last year's draft. Congratulations to everyone and best wishes to a productive pro career
You guys obviously have some serious firepower coming back in Macario and Smith, but you've suffered lots of losses to graduation. Do you see Stanford seamlessly replacing the departed, and challenging for another CC this coming year?
Cook was a senior this past season, yes? So she didn't get drafted by the NWSL but gets signed by PSG? Interesting.
Am I right that she didn't declare for the draft? If she has long term WNT aspirations, it would make sense, since she wasn't going to be on the roster for this year's World Cup. Go to PSG now, get the time and pay there, and come back to the US in 2021.
I haven't checked but I'm guessing that you're right, and the fact that she maybe didn't register occurred to me after my post! I don't see why she wouldn't have registered and given herself another option (the NWSL), but maybe she was set on playing in Europe and/or had already had talks with PSG. It's worked out well for her, it seems.
Cook essentially had to have a contract ready to go with PSG before the draft. With that said, she has more leverage and power when and if/when she does decide to come back to the league on where she goes and possible salary. If she declared and was subsequently drafted and then signed for PSG, when she was done in France, her rights would be owned by a specific team and she loses salary negotiating power. Smart on her part to stay clear of the draft.
Not declaring protected her from being drafted by a team she doesn't want to play for, which fits with what you're saying. But, any team can name her as a discovery player and, if it does, that team then would have first rights to negotiate with her. So, she's not entirely free of a club having some leverage. But she's freer the way she's done it. Plus, she very well may have wanted to play for PSG at some time over the next four years and this is a good way to do it and still be in the World Cup mix for 2023. Think Lindsay Horan.
Has an English father. Has options. She wants to play at the highest level she can and improve. I dont think she is wedded to the US as the sole choice. There are more players like this than people think. The US is not the only game in town for these kids
Why would anyone in the world even consider playing in the NWSL over teams like PSG unless you’re in the consideration to be allocated? She will actually be in the better environment than Stanford in almost every aspect which I don’t think any NWSL teams can say outside of maybe Portland. It’s great that there’s a league in our country for our players after college, but NWSL is far, far away from being anything professional
