Are they really the lesser squad? If you create a combined 11 from today's starters, at a minimum, Cresswell, Anderson, Rice, and Nasri have to be part of that 11.

Would love to have had Arnoutovic, minus his bullshit posturing.

That’s harsh. Sure we should be better, but there have been plenty of games the last few years where we haven’t been better than “lesser” opposition—as have city, spurs, etc. As I said yesterday, Pellegrini has WHU playing well. They were 7 in the form table before today over the last ten matches.

So decent opposition in an away derby means 3 points is hard. We were setup defensively to limit their chances and we did. They scored on a 1 in 20 shot, it happens. On the attack side, no Mesut, no miki, no hector and they limited kola. Ramsey could have/maybe should have started, but he has one foot out the door so I’m not too shocked. He had 30 mins to do damage and was decent but didn’t set the pitch ablaze either.

Laca, Auba and iwobi all had decent chances to at least get a point and they didn’t take them.

This is definitely a worrying stretch from Emery. There has been no improvement since he took over. The defense had gotten worse despite adding Leno, Torriera and Sokratis, and some good finishing from Auba (that was admittedly absent today), is the only reason we aren’t midtable. We have created fewer chances after this many games this season than in any recent season.

The transfer news doesn’t reflect well on Emery either. A manager willing to take on Denis Suarez clearly has his ambitions capped at the Europa League. I know it’s early days, but from what we have seen so far, and his record, it’s clear this task was beyond his abilities.

This is not “Emery ball”. At Sevilla his teams were routinely “best of the rest” in chance creation. His Valencia teams were very good and fun to watch attacking teams that gave Madrid and Barca nightmares. His PSG teams scored almost 200 league goals in his two seasons. So I don’t think what we are seeing is “Emery ball” and he’s clearly not the Spanish Dyche. It may not quite be working at the moment, but I think we can reserve judgement and give the guy a chance.

Look, I’m not saying he is the answer or even a great manager. But he has shown that he can produce good football and winning sides. The guy has had 8 months and 4 signings so I think we can give him a little more rope to either find his way or hang himself.

Really disappointing we couldn't show more energy and athleticism after a full week off.

Hmmm. Iwobi was the most creative player on the pitch for us today. He was hardly a passenger.

Keeper is a wash at least as well and I’d take either of their CBs over mustafi at the moment.

I wrote on the other thread, losing Holding was basically the start of our tailspin. Kinda funny really, but as it is I think Mavro is our best chance to pull out of it.

As far as today goes, I think we could have scraped a win somehow if Miki were healthy.

Thank God the defence has improved so much by excluding Ozil

Jitty, I don't mean to get on your case too hard, because God knows you're not the only one. But the Ozil propaganda is utter shit. Ozil is shit too. And if you or he think he can help matters, he can start by being available for selection. That would be a radical plan.

Why does ozil not have his PR machine going like he did after the Germany situation. All I see from him is stuff about coming back from injury.

No, I don't get that at all. Emery has shown willingness to play Ozil, he's shown willingness to play Ramsey for that matter. This "injury" business is not being instigated by the club, and it wouldn't make any sense if it were. Ozil could pop their balloon in a heartbeat, by simply saying that he's healthy and ready to play.

How about if he starts Ramsey and/or Ozil. Ramsey still leads the team in assists, in spite of the fact that he has played less than 900 minutes in the league. He would have had another today if Iwobi's shot hadn't gone just wide of the post. Under Emery this team hasn't been very creative, they are only averaging 12.5 shots per game and 9.5 key passes per because and he typically leaves his most creative players on the bench. Between them, the two outcasts, Ramsey and Ozil, average 4.2 key passes per 90 minutes and 3.3 shots per 90 minutes. I used the 90 minute numbers for them because they are not getting full games.

Arsenal have three wins against teams currently in the top 8. 2-0 vs Watford, 3-1 vs Leicester City and 4-2 vs Tottenham. Ozil played a key role in two of the wins and Ramsey in the third. Against Watford Ozil had the only goal from the run of play, the other goal was an own goal. Against Leicester Ozil had a goal, an assist, and a dummy on the pass that lead to the third goal. Against Tottenham, Ramsey came on at the half and provided the assists on two of the goals in the comeback win. He also had three shots.

For my money, one of them has to start every game. I'd like to see both of them start. Leaving Ozil off the team sheet for tactical reasons is nonsense.

Emery has said on two or more occasions, including today, that he was left out of the squad for tactical reasons.

Well yeah, that's exactly the point. Emery doesn't think he's helping the club win games. We haven't seen anything to lead us to believe that Emery is wrong. It's not like he's obviously our best player but we're playing Emery Jr at #10 instead.

Yeah, as things stand I'd definitely be playing Ramsey. I think the fear is that now he's signed with Juve he's going to shut it down with us. I'm not seeing it. His performances haven't necessarily been that great but whatever issues there are the same limitations he's always had as a player. I think he's putting in a fair effort for us, contract or no contract.

With what we have, I'd definitely be playing Ramsey, benching Iwobi.

Season long, not just the flashes he shows for us.

Side note, there were a few times where he would make a great turn or run and instantly turn the ball straight over.
