Timothy Weah is expected to finish the season away from PSG. The young striker (18) will be loaned for the next six months at Celtic Glasgow, with no option to buy. Before validating this departure, the club of the capital wanted to extend the contract of its American international, which ran until 2020. At the end of a meeting that took place this Friday between the player's mother, his lawyer, Badou Sambagué, and Antero Henrique, sports director of the club, an agreement was found around a one-year extension.

Once signed his contract, Timothy Weah should fly this Sunday or Monday for Glasgow.

Patrick Roberts got 6 in 13 after joining Celtic in January. He regressed to 11 in 47 the season after.

Charly Musonda flopped completely - 0 in 8 before being shipped back out.

Both of them are wide men rather than out and out forwards. I wouldn't be surprised is Weah is used out wide (or off the bench) though.

I still think it's not the right move.

Say, he scored 10-15 goals for the rest of the season? He's not learning all that much IMO.

But then say, he only scores 5 goals all season. Looks bad if he can't even score consistently against Scottish flunkies.

Sending a kid to Glasgow is pro soccer bootcamp. You have to show up, deal with insane amount of crap if you have a bad day at the office, and carried like a god for a few hours if you score a key goal. Assuming he plays regularly, he'll get a lot of minutes, most against fairly crappy teams, and a few against relatively decent teams. He'll learn plenty. It's stuff he could learn at PSG, of course, but he'd have to be a team regular.

He's at that age that playing someplace and starting to prove the hype day-in, day-out is not bad. I'm sorry it's Celtic, but I'll survive.

It's a shame that it wasn't a Belgian or Dutch club.

That's ludicrous. He's scored about two goals at senior level and you think that if he scored 15 goals in half a season he's not learning much. He's being managed by Brendan Rodgers , they man who is known for developing players like Dembele, Sterling etc. He'll be be very lucky to hit double figures. Celtic have just signed Oli Burke as well. Weah is being signed solely as a striker

is it really ludicrous? The Scottish league isn't the Italian league. He'll be grinding himself to the gears, but some goals there won't exactly impress his PSG bosses.

Now that's a great point what you said about Rodgers.

15 goals would be like, a goal a game. That would be wild.

Like I've said in this thread before, I think the target to watch for is a goal every 150 minutes or so.

I think the Ered would have been the best move for him - depending on the coach, but no one asked me.

Only one year extension is not that great for the son of Georges. It's pretty much the minimum acceptable. So he takes his mom and his lawyer, not an agent, to the table? Geez. Hope he's not walking around with a detachment of Yaounde bodyguards.

Teams loan players largely for financial reasons (whomever will pay) and sometimes for developmental reasons. If the latter, Celtic is about helping Weah grow more hair on his balls

It's possible he's the one that doesn't want to commit beyond that. Maybe he's thinking - I'll give it one more year and then move on from PSG if I can't make it.

For PSG, it behoves to have a nice little padding in the contract so that they get some money for him. Yeah PSG is rich but even they won't sneeze at 5 million or so. That said, Celtic is the closest match to PSGs situation so it's good that they loan him there. It might be coincidence or it might show that they have some hope in him.

cutting out the middle man (an agent and his exorbitant %) is SMART...and it's gotta be more money for him in the end, too.....plus, I'm sure his mom knows more than 99% of people about soccer contracts/deals at this point in her life given her experiences, too.....she's not just a "soccer mom" she's also the wife of a former world footballer of the year. Now, yeah, there are certainly agents out there that know more than her - but there are probably some agents out there that don't - look at all of the weakass moves that have littered recent yanks abroad history - agudelo to stoke (wtf), shea to epl (lol), hamid to denmark, kitchen to hearts, hyndman to bournemouth, miazga to chelsea, epb to man city, mix to nycfc, altidore to sunderland and hull, bradley to aston villa, feilhaber to derby, etc etc etc...

all those moves and others i cannot think of right now off the top of my head happened with agents - so having an agent involved gaurantees NOTHING - and might even be a good idea considering the wasteland of moves that have happened with the help of agents in USMNT history.

What if he scores 7, meets the lass of his dreams, and vows to never leave Scotland again? PSG really isn't thinking things through with this move.

Not sure getting paid over the market and above your skill level is a bad for an agent or a player. Shea probably managed to finance his gun collection and some art supplies. I mean Juan got paid for not playing soccer for a couple of years. Sounds like a good agent to me. They got what was likely the best contracts of their lives and got paid regardless of if they failed or not. You are making the supposition that a different spot might have led to different outcome when the easiest explanation is they were not very good and got exposed in a real meritocracy.

As for Weah, if he can't make any noise in the SPL then he damned sure isn't PSV level. His extension was probably meant to ensure they got some return on their investment if he does well in the SPL and generates some interest.

that's hilarious - agudelo was litterally barred from playing in England and you think he didn't make it b/c of merit?? okay.

don't know who was in his ear about not wanting to follow up on interest in germany and netherlands -maybe his agent wanted him to follow up on that...

not every single player who flops wouldve made it in a different circumstance - but some would - and i think americans have been putting themselves in some DUMB positions over the past few cycles i.e. career chances and success and it has hurt them.

there is luck and cunning in who gets where in the club ladder - it isnt just "talent sorts itself out" if that's what you are saying....its a mix of nurture and nature - not one or the other - and agents should be advising clients to think long-term not RAMRODDING them into the EPL just cuz they pay the most.

highschoolers that want to go to the NBA or 1 and dones who are done aftet theri first contract suffer the same thing - fit matters big time - and it seems from the outside looking in that agents are obvlivious oftentimes to this.

Agudelo could have played elsewhere, but it likely would have meant he did not get the guaranteed Stoke money. He was getting paid more by Stoke to not play football since he had no work permit than anybody else was willing to pay him to play football. He failed to impress in his loan and that was that, he sat until the contract ran out.

I get that it is not always merit, but over the course of a career I believe most players find their level. It is pretty simple and doesn't require any mental gymnastics or suspension of disbelief to make that work logically.

Weah is an example of guy who might be almost ready for a rotational spot at PSG but had some really dreadful luck with ECM getting signed late. If it was indeed bad luck and he can play at PSG then he ought to be able to make some noise in that league. Is he good enough or is he at PSG because of who his daddy is and they thought an academy spot was okay for the son of a legend?

I think the extension indicates PSG is at least on the fence as to whether there is a top flight player in there somewhere.

Odsonne Édouard was initially on loan at Celtic from Paris before Celtic signed him. This is potentially a similar situation.
