Just thought I'd add this in here as thought it was interesting and you never know could be a future quiz question but I've been watching the England U20's in the World Cup currently on and on the wing is a kid called Ben Loader who is the older brother of Danny Loader. Has it ever happened before that two brothers play for England at football and Rugby Union respectively? I can't think of any but it is late.

Phil Neville was England U15 cricket captain but I think that might have been a year before Gary played for England schoolboys/U16's. Phil also played for England schoolboys/U16's.

Can't think of any Rugby/Football combos.
Denis and Leslie Compton played cricket and football respectively for England, if we're including other sports. Denis also played football for Arsenal and Leslie kept wicket for Middlesex.

Could mention Tracey Neville's England netball caps too.

I assume we're only doing siblings? There are probably a few footballers who had parents appear for their country in other sports. The Brightwells, etc.

George Cohen was a right back on the 1966 World Cup team.
Nephew Ben Cohen played on the 2003 World Cup rugby team.

Can honestly say it's the first time I've seen Jones look so baffled.

It's very clear to see why, with the way we set up as a defensive unit and the general consensus england adopts to breakdown, but to be so stubborn and suggest we pick Shields on his second cap, no bigger than Neil Back and put him at Lock???!!?

How did you allow it slip... :(

Unfortunately due to my location and my computer temporarily out of action I couldn’t see them game but letting that lead slip is ridiculous at International level. From what I’ve heard and read ill discipline giving away countless penalties as usual basically handed the Springboks the victory. It is puzzling how the breakdown problems hasn’t been addressed but just don’t know what it is with the English system, are we just not producing breakdown specialists like Neil Back anymore?

Ok, I'll go through this as the media isn't very good at discussing the issue. Penalties are the symptom, but not the problem. It's the end result. The defensive tactic is the problem.

England operate a rush defense. The basis being if you apply in your face, intense physical pressure, the opponent will make mistakes, often with our kicking meaning it'll happen in the opposition half. We can then pounce, either score a try or convert with some points. It has a lot of upsides, however with England at the moment, a lot of downsides are occurring. The first is the media and fan stigma, England aren't actually a very big side. We're quite slight physically, so this tactically doesn't overly suit us. Secondly, we as you say, tactically our response to fixing the breakdown is by ignoring it. We're trying to change the dynamic by using physicality and forcing knock ons leading to scrums or line outs, rather than the breakdown. Teams have twigged this and noticed we only put 1 man, or 2 men in, duly because we want to keep shape in defense, however this is where the big, big issue is.

With us, being small, we're losing contact. We're losing yards (Ford is one of the best tacklers in the team and is almost always blamed for no reason bar being small) and as a result, if we aren't competing at the breakdown, we're conceding yards, the opposition can just build, and build, and build more pressure. Eventually, we crack and often cough up a silly penalty. We have no way to release pressure and every time we get it, we're deep in our half and we have to kick. It's happening every game. EVERY BLOODY GAME.

Why? Well for the past 12 years, we've had a league that preferred 2 6's and penalised people very heavily for competing at the breakdown. This year it's changed and there are some gems coming through. Curry for example is excellent, as is his brother. Jack Willis might be the great hope and is delivering on it too, however he got a horrific injury in the last game before tour and is done for the year. As is, we've played Robshaw who's sadly seen his best days now. Curry is a kid and Vunipola's unfit, however they are the only fit players left. The quins issue is a problem too. Robshaw, Care, Brown, Marler and Sinckler have fallen off an utter cliff this season. I'm a quins fan and I've watched them lose 6 times at home by 50 pts this season. They are done for me. They are absolutely done. There's a rumour I've seen doing heavy rounds, that Hartley's done, for all tense and purposes. He's now had concussion symptoms 5 months, no player has returned after having more than 9/10 weeks. He's finished. So we've got alot of senior players who aren't good enough, an incorrect tactic and kids who aren't there yet but have massive promise.

In short, Eddie needs to try a different defensive setup, get away from his mainstay all his career too of 2 6s and play Willis, the currys, ben earl etc. He needs to get the forwards fitter and try new things. More importantly just tell them to pile into the breakdown and cause havoc. There's a good team in there, maybe not world cup winning, maybe they are, but alot tactically is going wrong and sadly there are a few senior players falling off a cliff VERY QUICKLY.

I'm looking forward to the NFL starting up again. I've been watching it since the BBC started covering they've done a great job with it, it's probably terrible if you know what your watching but I enjoy it.

There was a Gaelic footballer who played in the Irish league as a centre forward and absolutely dominated in the air scored a load of goals, SAF had him over on a trial and Kanchelskis had to go to Fergie and tell him to get him off before he hurts someone. I cant remember his name though. Maybe for once Greengrass could come in handy.

Anybody else think Usyk could give Joshua, Wilder and Fury some problems? I suspect he's going to be an avoided man. The last year or so HW boxing really has been back: Wlad vs Joshua, Wilder vs Ortiz, Fury vs Wilder. I don't buy the claims Joshua has been avoiding people, he was lucky to get his gold medal the Cuban and the Italian beat him imo but he's been pro for 4 years and has 3 of the 4 belts, Wilder has the other one but most importantly Fury is the lineal champ. But these fights are massive events with life changing sums of money, it makes perfect sense negotiations are protracted and difficult. Hopefully we dont get a Lewis vs Bowe situation where the fight just doesn't happen but I suspect all 3 will fight each other over the next 2 or 3 years, its just so much money now.

From before the time you're talking about, but its reminded me that Kevin Moran was a top level Gaelic footballer before joining Man Utd.

Well, that was probably the worst half of Rugby I’ve ever seen from an England side and there’s been a few but from being 31-0 and not to win that game was a disgrace! Talk about a game of two halves! Shocking stuff tbh.

I actually feel sorry for New Zealand in the (Cricket) World Cup final. For much of the game they looked like winning and were a bit unlucky for it to end in a tie. Not sure a 'super over' is the best way to decide a game...

Still having been runners up in 1979, 1987 and 1992 it was nice to see England prevail in the final.

The super over certainly added to the spectacle and drama, but should really be reserved for 20-20 in my book as that format is mainly about hitting. Not sure what the best option is though - maybe an extra 3 overs to reflect the different length of ODIs.
At previous World Cups, the tie breaker for ties in the knock out stages was position in the group stages (Australia/South Africa 1999).

Yeah, did feel a bit for New Zealand especially with the accidental field throw that hit Stokes bat to go for 4 runs. Even though it’s within the laws, I think that needs looking at as didn’t really seem right to me. Having said that, was delighted with the win, about time we had a bit of Lady Luck on our side especially with the Cricket team as we have been the best one day side in the World for a few years now.

Interested to see what the FA's sports performance gurus supposedly learn from this. 4 years ago England were dumped out in the group stage so it's quite a turn around

Anybody been watching the rugby? It's been good fun but the pool stage is far too long, rugby is like basketball in that you rarely get upsets but Uraguay were great. All the bigger matches have lived up to the hype but it's mainly going to be dead rubbers soon. The Japanese seem to be turning out which must be a huge relief to World Rugby.

If all goes to plan, we'd face New Zealand in the semis. After a very hard game against either Wales or Australia. The draw has not been kind to us. Then again you can't expect an easy route to a World Cup final in rugby, there's not enough good teams.

Japan just beat Ireland! Unfortunately didn’t watch it and I’m kicking myself about it! Lol. Another shock result for Japan after beating South Africa in 2015. Well done!

The Irish fans have been very dismissive and arrogant concerning Japan.
