I would not be surprised if Wallace starts at left back against Toluca. I like the move as it gives us three players who would be comfortable at that position once Jimmy is healthy.

Sporting acquires Erik Hurtado in exchange for SuperDraft picks in 2020 and 2021.

We just signed Peter Vermes's perfect forward.

    17 goals in 6 seasons.

All it cost us was a first and a second round draft pick.

    And a roster spot.

And whatever portion of the Salary Budget he sucks up.

    Sigh.

The draft picks don’t bother me. The draft as a whole has become less and less meaningful in terms of talent (especially where we’ve been regularly picking). I mean look at our recent first round picks, Dick, Storm, Hallisey, SAS, and Dia, only SAS has made much of a contribution in MLS. In 3 years when the 2021 draft maybe we’re sucking, but I doubt it, the draft will likely be even less meaningful.

Yeah, but any effort to pick up a known quantity forward that doesn't score goals is head-scratching.

Might as well draft a couple of college strikers. Sure, they'll both likely be Connor Halliseys and not Dom Dwyers, but what the hell do we need Hurtado for?

At this point he's a body, and probably third on the depth chart behind Rubio and Nemeth. Other than that I'm pretty meh on this move specifically.

Haven't seen this mentioned, but if you'd have forced me to throw out a 3-5-2 formation a few years ago and let me pick ANY MLS players to play the wingback positions, Zusi and Wallace might have been those guys. They're both older now, but I wonder if that's an option from time to time. Wallace gives you something similar to Zusi (and something Sinovic can't). Outside of Seth, I guess Medranda or Croizet were the options at the left wingback spot if we were going with that formation. I think it now means Vermes could throw it out there, especially if Salloi/Russell are on international leave and want to get Nemeth/Hurtado some minutes.

I'd imagine he will sustain an injury sometime in the next couple weeks and miss 2019 entirely.
Sucks, because I have liked his play through the years. But I've liked all of their games in their time before becoming SKC free agents. A curse is a curse.

It's also a way to give Roger a rest (maybe) In front of Besler, Ike, Fontas, and inside Wallace and Zusi, you'd go with Ilie and Felipe with Nemeth/Croizet/Busio in the 10 role, and the potential for Salloi and Russell up top.
This of course assumes we keep Ike, and I'd think the odds on that are gonna be about 33 percent. If Waston set the bar for a veteran CB value, we're gonna have a hard time saying no to $850k or more in Garber bucks.
I feel creepy saying this, because I've been a fan, but would this be both good business and good football sense?

Hurtado sounds like we're doubling down on Rubio, which is fair enough. I'm optimistic about Nemeth as well for a new season. Utility depth like Wallace and Hurtado seems fine to me. I know we can't afford to, but the only starter from last year who I'd like to see upgraded is Roger. Dude is a beast and has been for years, but he is not the chaos engine he once was. But since he's pretty expensive and a replacement would be massively more so, we'll just have to hope for workable depth.

Unless we very unexpectedly lose a starter, I expect a really similar team to last year. And why not? Topped the conference and barely missed out of going to mls cup.

When SKC was at their best, they had a CB that was fast, fearless and could jump (win headers). Colin filled that spot and then with Ike. If he goes, I’m not sure that Fontas is that kind of guy. I just haven’t seen enough of him to know what the guy can do. Either way, my guess is that SKC has a CB on their radar that will fill that kind of role if Ike goes.

Agree. The days of Red card Roger are over. I hope they can get a couple of more good seasons out of him because he is too expensive to keep on the bench. I would love to see them bring in a young and raw copy of him to grow into that role.

He's young, ish at least - 24. We have, according to this piece, offered a lot of money for him and a huge salary. This has all the normal problems of putting together a highlight reel and having any idea of the quality of the player, but in this case it's a left back so WTF, really.

I don’t understand what huge money means, especially when talking about European soccer compared to huge money for MLS. Either way this guy and huge money does not make sense considering his background and lack of any real accomplishment.

I'm less concerned about accomplishment and more about how few games he's played to date. If he's on a free and his salary is low, I wouldn't mind. But if the team is putting money on a fullback? He doesn't really hit the criteria on paper.

    Who knows though.

Huge money can be a relative matter, though. Ligue 2 doesn't pay very well, at least not as a rule. Ligue 1 is a level below the Bund, but Ligue 2 isn't even in the same conversation as the 2Bund. $150k a year, for instance, would be a big payday for most Ligue 2 outside backs.
On the other hand, the same piece discusses how Croizet is essentially part of the furniture at SKC these days, which seems a bit of an overstatement, so maybe they are prone to it.

If this piece is to be believed, and it probably is not, this Fall has been his breakout period, where he's moved from enough potential that he got contracts at a couple decent places, but never quite took the next step to get on the field, to becoming a player in recent months. If that is the case, as we are buying early as he's hitting the ascending path, then good for us, that's really hard to do with players half a world away.
OTOH, well, there are a lot of other hands. This is probably a make believe pursuit.

As recent drafts have added Smith, Dick and Storm to our senior roster, a guy who might actually play a couple games and give us injury cover seems like decent value for draft picks. I am not saying anything negative about these players, but looking at the roster, it's clear today SKC doesn't need the drafts to unearth such players.
The drafts are still a tool, but every year they look more and more like some of the stuff on my Dad's old work bench, the things that leave you thinking cool but thankful we've moved on.

Like I've mentioned ... I am hoping Felipe is that "Roger replacement" and Busio can make a jump in terms of minutes next year and then be a full on starter by 2020.

Couldn't agree more ... right now, with where MLS is and especially with where SKC are with their roster depth ... draft picks are essentially being given 2 years at SPR to make a difference ... if you don't find a way through that, it's not a big deal to SKC. It will get more difficult the more years SPR is around as they will ideally get more "seasoned".

Sure, but Hurtado is a known quantity. And if he's just a body for practice, a college draft pick is going to come cheaper.

My fear is that Peter sees him getting minutes on the field. We'd kinda broken out of the mold of having four of six attacking players being no real danger to the opposition goal this year - to great effect. I really don't want to go back to Dwyer island with Peterson and Zusi on the wings.

I love what Peter brings, but he keeps backsliding to old, proven unworkable, habits. Whether it's not putting enough goal scorers on the field or refusing to use substitutions for anything other than injury or added time time-wasting, he tends to be pretty set in his ways.

I was looking at our 2018 roster today, which came in at just under $9.8 million for total compensation. We can cut $2 million from the budget number with DP's over the minimum. With a cap of $4.something like 2 million, and TAM totalling $4million, that means we should still have the Dwyer money, or other money if we spent that, and the approx $400.000 we came in under budget, right? Obviously a big chunk of that goes to Salloi to move him into the realm he played in last season. If we move Ike, we get a bit of cap room back.
I'm hoping there will be an announcement that the general cap is being boosted by another million, and maybe a couple more are added elsewhere.
But without that, am i right in seeing room for only one impact move in our budget?
Long way of saying, I think our attacking players are what they are.

I think you're about right. With some clever working, we could bring in probably one notable player. Assuming none of the main guys move on or anything.

The salary budget won't massively increase this year, just the normal yearly tick up. That said, I expect even more free tam floating around, so the team could make something happen if they really work at it. Biggest question right now is who we might lose this offseason. I don't think we're in a big danger of it, but I wouldn't expect many signings of the core stands still.
