I had never been able to get confirmation on the specifics of the Dutch rules, but this agent has lined them out:

Non EU/EEA players need a work permit in order to play professional football in the Netherlands.

The basic principle is that a work permit is only issued if is non-EU/EEA player who is:

    • 18 or 19 years old signs a contract with a basic salary of € 197.308,- gross per year;
    • 20 years or older signs a contract with a basic salary of € 394.616,-gross per year.
These salaries are significant higher than the average salaries of players in the Dutch Eredisvie. The simple truth is that most clubs can not pay those amounts. The big winners of this protective regulation are the Dutch and other EU/EEA players. It is hard to deny that in Holland young talents have good chances to to play in L1 and L2 at an early age.

I didn't realize the rules included a higher salary for 18 & 19 year olds as well as the 20+ crowd.

It also gives context for all the people screaming at young Yanks to go to the Netherlands.

I knew there were non-EU minimums, but I didn't know they were THAT high! Wow.

Yes, it's certainly significant that a Dutch club would be willing to pay an American (with no EU passport) amateur player this kind of money.

Not that you're doing this, but don't fall for the "This is why more young unsigned Americans should go to Holland" line here. This is why more young unsigned Americans don't go to Holland. If it starts happening more often, it's a big deal.

    No pressure, Richie!

Well off the top of my head Michael Bradley (18) and Robbie Rogers (19) though that was back in 2006.

Just shows the depth of the hole we are just starting to climb out off. Just 12 years ago MB went there, Rogers went there, Nguyen. That wasn't such a big deal back then.

  11. I've posted in several YA threads the rules plus the updated minimum wages, as these vary by the yearly fluctuations of the average wage in the Dutch league.

Then I guess I never noticed. Mea culpa.

  13. IIRC I posted in the Rubio thread, but it could be another player too as I'm very old with the memory problems coming with it, that the player would get a very nice bithday present the moment he becomes 20, as his wage jumps immediately to the adult max.

Correct me if I’m wrong but the non-EU minimum salary is lower for players 21 and under
    https://www.ed.nl/psv/gemiddeld-eredivisie-inkomen-voor-seizoen-2017-2018-278-500-euro~a0ef4eef/
For the coming season 2018-2019 the minimum salary for 18-19 year olds is 208875 euro (roughly 235000 $). The day they turn 20 the salary jumps to 417750 euro (470000). Who doesnot want such a birthday present:)

If a club loans a non-EU player to an Eredivisie club, the parent club can subsidize the salary to reduce the burden on the Dutch club (I believe Agudelo’s salary at Utrecht was subsidized by Stoke)
Subsidize in the sense they can pay the contracted salary up till the point of the minimum wage for the player. Otherwise the ruling can be dodged.
So the club always has to pay at least the minimum wage.

  15. The minimum wage the last few years has been rising, due to the fact that the big clubs pay more to their players than a few years ago. They abandoned their self induced wage ceiling.

He was on wages from the EPL, so he was already well above these compensation numbers. He didn't have to "earn it" himself.

  22. Well, after the doldrum Erik Palmer-Brown currently is in with his choices, it will be interesting to see how the Young Yanks fare that choose to go the Dutch way.
I wish Richie good luck and success.
