For the record I would be all for Sigi as GM.

Other names I would be ok with other than GBS for GM or Coach

    Tab Ramos
    Gino Padula
    Brad Friedel
    Caleb Porter
    Ken Lolla
    Brian Maisonneuve
    Todd Yeagley

    Not Harkes
    Not Arena
    Not Kreis

One who finds Columbus an altogether less fashionable part of the country will not be someone who will want to be here.

I mean, didn't we just rid ourselves of someone who didn't want to be here? Almost destroyed the franchise, as I recall.

Brian Carroll played a rather large role on the '08 team. Who did he play for before he got here? Does that invalidate that cup, for you? Taint it in some way?

I was around in the 90's too. I HATED DC, and shed tears after they curb stomped us in '99. Bruce Arena is a turd who has mocked our city and was at the helm of the greatest soccer embarrassment any of us have ever seen in this country. But, BUT-that man gets trophies in this league. That is what he does. Repeatedly, over and over again. I want trophies, and it does not matter how they are obtained. If they have to be bought, I don't care. If Bruce Arena signs on to be the GM, from that point forward, he is Columbus. In the future, when this team is lifting trophies and we all are able to rub in the faces of every single person who said this city was hopeless, who chanted their stupid "AUSTIN TEXAS" chants at us, who said WE were the reason this league is failing, will it really matter to you where Bruce Arena was 20 years ago? I know where I stand.

I guess I have standards. Plus it seems whole heartedly Ohioan of me to think that how you play, how you win, and how represent your community matters.

If all you care about is winning championships just go jump on the Manchester City Bandwagon.

No that doesn't invalidate the cup, you ninny.

Brian Carroll won a cup in 2004 with DC United. Tony Sanneh was busy missing pk's and talking about Jeff Cunningham's diapers.

If you are equating Brian Carrol's role with DC United and his history against Columbus to that of Bruce Arena's, I don't know what to tell you.

The "how" of Manchester City's winning is a huge part of its current identity.

Maybe another example would be better.

Whoa whoa whoa. Columbus has gotten to play the small market card, absent/crappy owner card, MLS hates us card long enough to the point that it's part of our identity. That's ok - we are MASSIVE. And it's true- that was our reality. We all lived it.

Now thanks to this great city and people we are getting new training facilities, new stadium in the best spot possible location, one owner with NFL pockets and connections and another that has been a part of the Crew since the start. It's literally a dream scenario.

However what comes with that is the reality that the Crew is entering a new realm of existence. Along side the Seattle's, Portland's, ATL's, and so on. So the people who were actually able and willing to Save the Crew want to bring in a guy who has multiple NCAA championships, MLS trophies, shields, took the USA to the quarterfinal and a handball away from the semifinal of a world cup- and has the most connections in North American soccer of possibly anyone into a role as GM - and you say no?

I laugh. The MLS is evolving. The Crew is evolving. Arena is an experienced, connected name that can play great in a GM role. Keep living in the days of DC United glory, cheap owners, broken bathroom stalls, and fabricated rivalries with Toronto. The smart ones will cherish those memories yet be grateful that Columbus is moving on. Moving on and willing to bring in the most successful man in US soccer history - in an effort to be the most MASSIVE small market club in the history of professional sports.

Investing a billion dollars of oil tycoon money sounds like buying championships to me...

Call them Citeh for a reason.

The championship that Leicester won was so much more meaningful and impressive than any championship won by Arsenal, City, or United ever will be.

Same is true in in MLB. When a smaller team beats the Yankees it means more than when the pinstripes win for the 90th time with their big money payroll.

Either way I'm not against investment. I just think that character, style, and history matter. Today was a great step in line with that. I just think Arena would be a huge step in the wrong direction. One that would fringe supporters cringe and not want to buy tickets big.

How about the thing that Seattle does with the fans voting for GM? Maybe allow your number of votes to be based on fan score. I would even bet you'd get a Pogatetz write in!

Leicester are a wealthy club. Maybe not in the same league as the two Manc clubs, but don't go thinking they're Accrington Stanley or something.

The state already owns the land via the Ohio Expositions Committee - PSV just leases it from them for cheap (I believe it's even part of the "state-supported" argument of the Modell suit). PSV does own the stadium, BUT the lease specifies plans for the stadium should it go unused.

That said, I agree with the point behind the question, which is that they wouldn't have made an announcement without some degree of certainty about the team's future. I read the whole thing as a positive indication about the state of not only the sale, but of the state of negotiations for land for a new stadium.

Of course they spend. They also play excellent, quality football the vast majority of the time. It's not just winning for it's own sake (Mourinho-ball, for example, or Stanford for a closer-to-home example).

I don't follow. I thought that was a phonetic spelling of how Mancunians pronounce things.

I agree. But 5000:1 shots are exceptions for a reason.

    Great. So do I.

Fringe supporters have no idea who Bruce Arena is or why he was hated here.

Arena being compared in the same breath with City's spending spree seems...slightly insane on several levels.

I'm not necessarily thrilled, but I'm not going to lose my mind and get all "I'm a purer football fan than thou over this."

What do you mean by the "Browns' Stadium"? The NFL stadium? MAPFRE? Some other stadium I haven't heard of before?

Accrington are a wealthy club, too. Maybe not in the same league as a Luton Town, but don't go thinking they're Dagenham & Redbridge or something.

NFL stadium. Politicians up here have been on the Browns' case about it not being used enough almost since Day 1.

Do I get a trophy for being right about my prediction? I figured we would see a slow release of information....but I really hope it ends with a marketing blast with some sort of "get season tickets to lock in a future seat at the new stadium"

As for GM I really do hope its someone else besides Arena......I wouldnt be furious but I dont think he is the best choice for what we need. Then again I dont really care who the next coach or GM is.....as long as they bring the wins....and make the team exciting. Arena is one of the bigger risks than other choices because of his history and I would expect results now instead of later.

I really love the thought of turning the old stadium into the new training facility. It really sticks with the "honor your roots" theme.
