Looks like the first match of the Berhalter era will be 1/27/19, against Panama: On January 27, 2019: The #USMNT will play Panama in Glendale, Arizona. It will open the Berhalter-era of the team.— Brian Sciaretta (@BrianSciaretta) December 4, 2018 @bungadiri, can we sticky this one and un-sticky the 2018 thread?
The Chile game is a go for the late March FIFA dates. Likely in Houston (but possibly in San Diego). http://chile.as.com/chile/2018/12/15/futbol/1544832342_272305.html Because the #USMNT is already playing the Camp Cupcake games in California and Arizona and the El Tri signed an agreement recently to play one friendly a year in Dallas, it makes the US game more likely to be the Houston one than the San Diego one. No update as of yet about the Ecuador one.
I think one of those fall dates (November?) might be WCQ. Nations League has groups of three so that's only four games total. I assume we will learn more about qualifying once they settle officially on 32 or 48 teams.
It could also be friendlies. Group A will only have four games but Group B has four teams a group so that's six meaning some of Concacaf will need to use all of those dates in September, October, and November.
To point out the obvious there'll only be one game against a team from outside the Americas. This means no exposure to European style football.
I did, about 2 weeks ago: https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/2019-usmnt-schedule.2090815/ @bungadiri, can we merge these 2 threads? Thanks!
Got it. As you asked below, (sorry, didn't mean to ignore you) I also stickied this thread and unstuck the old one. Here's a link to the 2018 thread.
Little USMNT news - sources tell CBS Sports that U.S. Soccer is in discussions with Ecuador over a March friendly to be played in the United States. Would be in addition to the Chile friendly we reported.— Roger Gonzalez (@RGonzalezCBS) December 29, 2018
Even though they aren't Scandinavian, we played Iceland in 2016 but before that Sweden in '09, both wins.
Hearing that the #USMNT will play Ecuador in Orlando March 21 or 22 before facing Chile in Houston March 26. If games are finalized, that’s two good tests for the first full-strength U.S. squad under new coach Gregg Berhalter.— Doug McIntyre (@ByDougMcIntyre) January 7, 2019
I kinda wish we could play those countries away. But yeah I know it's all about the $$$$ here I'd love to see some matches against African or Asian teams stateside.
Ecuador is not as good of a test as advertised, IMO. I routinely don't think the competition level is that high when we play them.
So our 2019 schedule (this assumes we play a pre Gold Cup friendly, and that we qualify for the later Gold Cup rounds): January 27th: Panama in Glendale, AZ (Friendly) February 2nd: Costa Rica in San Jose, CA (Friendly) March 21st or 22nd: Ecuador in Orlando, FL (Friendly) March 26th: Chile in Houston, TX (Friendly) June: TBA (Friendly) June 18th: TBA in St. Paul, MN (Gold Cup - Group Stage) June 22nd: TBA in Cleveland, OH (Gold Cup - Group Stage) June 26th: TBA in Kansas City, KS (Gold Cup - Group Stage) June 30th: TBA in Philadelphia, PA (Gold Cup - Quarterfinals) July 3rd: TBA in Nashville, TN (Gold Cup - Semifinals) July 7th: TBA in Chicago, IL (Gold Cup - Final) That still leaves 6 matches in the September, October, and November windows. 4 of those 6 will be dedicated to the group stage of The CONCACAF Nations League, with the other 2 presumably being friendlies.
No clue if accurate, but Wikipedia has us playing Mexico in Arlington, and Qatar in New Jersey ahead of the GC in June. Seems odd to play Mexico right before the GC, but $$$$$$ so could be. With this, and the confirmed schedule above, we don't leave US soil until a CONCACAF nations game (likely against a minnow) in Sept or Oct. Soft landing for GGG.
Mexico signed a deal to play at JerryWorld in Arlington at least once a year for the next few years, so there could be SUM truth to that matchup. Qatar opens their Copa America play on 6/16 in Rio, so I'm guessing Wikipedia (which notes a friendly vs. Qatar on 6/15 in Harrison) has that one wrong.
Ecuador match is official. It will be on March 21st at 8 PM (ET) on ESPN2 Next stop: Orlando!#USMNT will face 🇪🇨 in its first 2019 game with the full player pool available.— U.S. Soccer Men's National Team (@USMNT) February 2, 2019
Looks like 2 tune up friendlies for The Gold Cup. The first will likely be at DC United's new stadium on June 4th or 5th, with the 2nd likely headed for Cincinnati on June 9th. Opponents should be announced within the next few weeks. https://www.washingtonpost.com/spor...i-field/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.514b2708d453 .
