I think another thing that is a little undervalued that honestly we have zero way of knowing is how the national team compliments a player's club career. Jon Gonzalez playing in Liga MX, playing for the Mexican national team is going to be a slight boost to his ability to go abroad to Europe over if he would have chose us. The powers that be in the MLS have proven themselves to be pretty resistant to top young talent going abroad (though this is changing slowly).

On the back end, you have the ability to make significantly more money (or you have had) coming back to the MLS as an American national team player at the back end of your career. Completely overvalued contracts you couldn't hope to get in Europe (ala Bradley, Dempsey, Altidore, etc). You still have that ability as a Mexican NT, but there are definitely less slots available based on market size because a large part of that salary is about marketability.

This assumes, of course that getting paid the most is a consideration when people make their decisions, which it very well often is not.

When you hear Mendez or Adams or Ledezma discuss their "dreams" it usually ends with them playing in the UEFA Champions League. This is probably true for most kids in the USA since we have been exposed to European soccer like very few other countries.

But for a JonGone or maybe other Mexican-Americans with close family ties to Mexico, maybe the dream is basically to play at the Azteca or for Club America. Do kids in Mexico dream of playing for Manchester United or for Tigres?

    Real Madrid and Barcelona.

But the top dream would probably leading Mexico to the "quinto partido"

Winning the WC comes second to that :p

So much noise about this young guy and Mexico has played him only 75 minutes in total: 30 against Bosnia and a half vs. Uruguay.

The guy featured in the Toulon tournament and youth teams along with the senior caps. He never got any Julian Green treatment and he was never promised any easy path to the senior team.

He should have been on the roster for the September qualifiers possibly and certainly October. He should have subbed on in the 80th minute versus Panama. That is how other dual nationals like Lyndon Gooch, Christian Pulisic, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Matt Miazga were handled last cycle.

I thought this was the really funny bit:

especially after a report revealed that then-scout Thomas Rongen had falsely claimed to have visited González’s house three times in 2017. Rongen never went

If we supposedly have 120 scouts (evidence?), that just makes putting the lying tool bag in charge of the most important prospects an even more egregious example of our federations incompetency.

    Really funny. Hilarious.

This part was one of the main things I noticed that shows how biased that article is in favor of Mexico and against the USA.

Why are we taking a report from Jonathan Gonzalez's camp as the truth? It could be the truth, it could also be a lie to push back on the criticism that came his way. What if someone close with Rongen claimed he did visit him? Would that be a true report? I think its important to understand who has what incentive to put out what talking point when discussing these "reports."

This can not be left standing without comment. Did you even read the report referenced by @sXeWesley? This was not a one sided attempt by the author to defame Mr. Rongen, it was an attempt to reveal the facts in a dispute.Your Trumpian attempt to spit on the Gonzalez household is not helpful.

Yeah, I thought the fact Rongen lied about that is pretty much a fact. Rongen never visited the Gonzales house.

The characterization of the Richie Williams call about Bradenton has two sides. Williams saying he warned them in a email he would be calling; so his 10 minutes to decide ultimatum isn't as bad?

Mexico really seems to be coming hard for USA born and developed players. Are they having some kind of problem down there developing their own players? What will their fans think when 3-5 of their players in some future game are Americans?

Maybe they're just doing it to screw with us. They aren't playing JoGo but giving the chances to guys like Erick Aguirre and Edson Alvarez (both 21), so he'll have to wait.

Not really, Mexico has a few good players with potential.

It is about always expanding the player pool, and 2, you take away a player from a rival.

In a way, it is a win-win for Mexico.

LOL. It is a fact, not a report from Gonzalez's camp. Try to keep up.

Either our only scout, or one of hundreds, was a lying piece of garbage. USSF is a complete joke, I would trust reports from pretty much anyone else over their total BS.

We are on the same page, Rongen is a liar, USSF is at fault 100% for losing Gonzalez.

It should also be pointed out that he has a younger brother who might turn out to be really good. You can imagine what he will remember when it comes time for him to decide if he would play for USA or Mex.

If Rongen had told the truth, he'd have said something after the Gonzalez family gave their version. Since it's unlikely he'd have risked telling a complete lie, it's possible he sent others to contact the family and they may or may not have done so.

FWIW, the best Mexican player in this year's U20 tournament was Alex Mendez. He plays for the US.

Probably a good time to say that the end of the article irked me. As if saying that Mexico's development was in complete ascendancy and we were being left in the dust. The truth is that we sent a B+ team and it thoroughly demolished Mexico. Gonzalez was ineligible to play (since he played up in the last U-20) but he would not have made a difference.

The other thing that bothers me about the article is that it's obvious that the Gonzalez household was a little over the top in it's bias. They wanted a full NT call up. They wanted him called a cycle early to the U20 WC. Tyler Adams treatment. I'm sorry but Adams is a better prospect.

Where is the proof its a fact?

I don't take reports from Gonzalez's camp as facts so we can use these reports to bash USSF some more. They can be bashed, whether its true or not. The report could be true or it may not. If its a fact, there should be available proof. Herculez Gomez (Gonzalez's camp) saying so isn't proof.

I think Rongen confirmed it and apologized.

Herc Gomez is the one who said Rongen had admitted to him he never visited Gonzalez in person three times. There was no apology, so far I know.

Also, whether we believe Herc is up to each of us. But had it been a lie, Rongen would have said something. He just got quiet.

    https://sbisoccer.com/2018/01/report-u-s-soccer-never-visited-jonathan-gonzalez-at-home

“Jonathan’s father categorically denies this,” said Gomez. “I said, ‘Sir, are you sure?’ He said, ‘I think I would be sure if somebody came to my house and I did not know him.’ I said, ‘Okay, can you ask Jonathan?’ He asked Jonathan (and the response was), ‘Never.’

Gomez, who was approached by Gonzalez’s dad to talk on the matter of his 18-year-old son choosing to play for Mexico over the U.S., then reached out to Rongen for clarity. Rongen admitted his previous claim was untrue.

“Rongen said, ‘Jonathan’s father is correct. I never went to go see him at his house specifically,'” said Gomez. “He then said he has been to Monterrey three times. He didn’t specify if he tried reaching out to Jonathan himself, but he said he spoke to officials down there. We spoke both via phone and text. At this point, I didn’t know if he was referring to Monterrey or (the Mexican federation) but his claim about seeing Jonathan at his house on three specific times is false.”

Gonzales was replaced on the U20 roster by a younger player who was not with the team for qualifying. At the time of the Portugal friendly, few had Adams as a better prospect that JoGo. Probably none did.

Gonzales absolutely should have been called. Around here and in the media it was assumed he wasn't called because of playoff calendar. But, Arena's guys didn't rate him and didn't think he deserved a spot. But they did call in that same kid who made the U20 roster even though he was last seen with a St. Louis DA team.

As someone who is a friend of the Gonzalez family, you have no idea what you are talking about man. US soccer screwed up royally, in more ways than one, with regards to jona. His parents and bro are super nice, despite you calling them liars on the internet lol.
