Water polo defense! Quick shots on serendipitous chances! Spin-and-drive past their that-tight marking. Do not let corners bounce in the box! Do not let GK walk out of own box :coffee:

If Stanford doesn’t win this year, it probably won’t be because there’s a team that’s better, but probably because of staggering amount of injuries they are dealing with. They are deep, but no team can sustain losing players the way they have this season

Well between the injuries with Stanford and our best players from UCLA going through a whole month of WWC qualifying, I think these two teams will even out when it comes to our match.

Xiao and Hiatt are both injured. No one knows the extent but them, their coaches and the medical staff. The only reason Davidson’s status is out is because of the WNT

    Stanford 2-0 Arizona

The Card started conference play with a victory over the visitors from Tucson.

Unlike in seasons past when they played at a hectic and frenetic pace in the first 10-15 minutes, Arizona played a conservative game this time around. They provided acres of space for the center backs to carry the ball. They pressed only when the ball went to the flanks, even triple-teamed at times to help out Beyonce. They played swarming defense when the ball was within 25 yards of goal, and we had a difficult time breaking them down. Haley had good looks in H1 even when they were all over her.

Macario scored the 1st goal off a header from a fk in the attacking third. Jordan scored the insurance goal with a feed from Macario holding it up in the flank. Workmanlike game resulting in 3 points.

Play was a little ragged at times when players kept losing the ball in midfield. We have to play a little better because the road is not going to be any easier this weekend when the LA schools come to town. UCLA will be all fired up after losing to Wazzu at home. UCLA are not going to want to have 2 losses after Friday night, so expect a battle.

USC are quietly having a great season, and are Sunday's opponent. Expect the early ball as they know how to, and will, punish aggresive gks. As usual, they create beautiful patterns to goal and their coach really gets the most out of his players. This weekend's results will go a long way in shaping what's looking to be an exciting Pac season

Don’t know the extent of everyone but Davidson, Hiatt, Xiao, Kuhlmann, and Tran were main usual contributors that didn’t play

    Stanford 3-2 UCLA

On a nice night down at The Farm, Stanford score just 3 goals, but it was enough to put down the visitors from Westwood.

The Card were moving the ball well but then it happens - the bane of this season, giving up goals off set pieces. They have a CK, then Haley inside the PA was whistled to have deflected a shot with her hand. I did not see it very clearly but there was little complaint from Stanford. Now where was this guy during last season’s championship match when they handled a shot from the Boss? UCLA calmly deposited the gift. Stanford 0-1.

Haley makes up for it by intercepting a ball in midfield, quick pass to a streaking Macario on a 1-v-1 opportunity, finishing with a deft chip against the onrushing gk. Just like that, we’re back in the game, Stanford 1-1.

And that score stood at HT. Were it not for a couple of incredible saves, we should have been up 3-1 off a Smith one-timer and a cleared ball that fell to Macario that she volleyed straight to the gk.

Did I say a Macario volley?

Good thing I got back just in time because a minute into H2, a UCLA defender headed a cross away, but towards the arc. Always head out and away towards the touchline, even endline, but never towards the face of goal. Macario’s eyes must have popped out of her sockets as it took an eternity for the ball to come down. When the ball did come down, Macario struck an audacious, outrageous, bodacious volley that will forever live in Stanford lore. Stanford 2-1.

    pic.twitter.com/5w3o3fPuJh

Macario struck it with perfect Zidanesque technique, reminiscent of Zizou’s audacious volley in the 2002 Champions League final,

The precocious Sophia Smith forced a turnover deep in UCLA’s half, and calmly slotted home the 3rd goal. Kiki and Sophia Smith were merciless down their left flank the whole game. Smith very well could have had a hat-trick, as would have Macario, as she had a much easier goal-scoring opportunity a little earlier from the same angle against a stranded gk, but her shot sailed over to Stanford Stadium. Haley also hit the crossbar from a similar distance. Easily could have been 7-1 by then.

But within a minute of scoring the 3rd goal, as usual, against another set piece, another missed assignment, and we give up a goal to make it interesting. Stanford 3-2. And that score held till FT.

Just like in last season’s championship match, you have to convert your opportunities against UCLA because they are far too talented and dangerous of a team to let hang around. I don’t want to have to face them in the Tournament.

An entertaining game nonetheless. The quality of Macario’s goals were worth the price of admission.

Sunday’s opponent are USC, who prevailed 1-0 in OT at Berkeley. I doubt that you’ll get as many gilt-edged goal-scoring opportunities against USC. They tend to not give up that much space, especially behind them. They will be all over Haley and not allow her to turn, so she needs to keep her focus and composure. Converting what scant chances there will be is paramount. KO 1300 Sunday

The USC goalkeeper was spectacular. She should get a call up to the USWNT in the latter months of 2019, or latter 2020 at the latest, depending on when the USWNT decide to phase out Alyssa Naeher and Ashlyn Harris, etc.

    Stanford 1-0 USC [F/OT1]

Women's college soccer’s two most recent champions met on a gorgeous afternoon down at The Farm. 90 minutes of scoreless soccer went to OT1, and Sophia Smith scores the golden goal in OT1 to lift the Card in a tight contest against USC. I was 5 minutes late to the game but still got to watch 90 minutes of soccer :D

H1 was pretty evenly played out. Both teams had good build-up play and put players in scoring position but neither team were able to score.

While Stanford enjoyed stretches of good possession, there were moments when the ball was recklessly played in the back, conceding possession in dangerous positions. One day an opponent’s going to cash in.

I mentioned in a previous post that SC doesn’t concede much space, especially behind them. They kept the attackers in front of them and the attackers were unable to play off of each other as well as they have been. Macario created a wonderful scoring opportunity for herself but gsjr was up to the challenge. All of our other scoring chances either sailed hgh or went wde.
SC knew Haley was the only way we can penetrate at the heart of their team so they would play her tight, numerous fouls notwithstanding, not allowing her to turn. The Boss is playing at a much deeper role this season and does not carry the ball as much as she did last season when she penetrated defenses seemingly at will, She could do that because deeper at the base of the spine you still had players that included Andi and Tierna; this season the Boss is at the base of the spine. So it’s really up to whoever’s playing at the tip of the attacking trident to hold up well and long enough to escape and elude containment, penetrate with the ball, and/or involve trailing runners.

On the sequence leading up tp the game-winning goal, Girma thwarted an attack that she converted for a throw-in. As much as Sophia Smith gets well-deserved praise and accolades, Girma, to me, has been this season’s unsung hero so far. Girma has more saves than the gks combined. Girma gets into position to block shots like nobody’s business. Very calm and composed, dribbles out of containment and connects with her forward pass, essentially a midfielder playing in the back. Hard to believe she’s a 1st-year player, as it seems like she’s been playing with this team for years.

Throw-in forced by Girma was deep in Stanford’s end, SC press high to win the ball back, as they have been doing the entire game. Haley receives the pass below the center circle. SC were pressing high, so Haley drew one of the central defenders high up in their attacking half. The gambit fails this time. Haley was able to turn her defender, and what an excellent turn it was, because the defender could not catch her to commit a cynical tactical foul. Haley turned and ran with the ball half the length of the field. Green grass and daylight all the way to their GK.

SC’s defense were caught out of position. And this time we were behind them.

It was a jailbreak. The precocious Sophia Smith ran past pursuit, ran past Haley, and run she did, Run, Sophia, run. The precocious one ran as fast as Traveller. Received a sumptuous pass from Haley, and calmly slotted the ball into the net, receiving a hip check from the defender in the process. GAME OVER. WE WON. [cue Conquest] ;)

It was a very entertaining game. And very relieved that the outcome was in our favor. We actually could have won the game in the 90th minute when Alana’s shot from a CK eluded SC hands and feet, and slowly trickled just inches wide of the post. Had we scored and won that way, that would have gnawed up SC’s butt for a long time coz it would have been seen as a lucky goal. But this golden goal had wonderful elements stamped on it - perfect technique, excellent teamwork, composed finish.

Both teams played well, and did what they wanted to do to win the game. SC were very organized and disciplined, tough to break down, obviously well-coached. Kudos to them, just a very good team.

This game showed the team that they can win in multiple ways when games are tight. Winning off a set-piece scramble at Minny, post-up play against the leg-breakers, and converting on a fastbreak opportunity in this one. Massive confidence boost going forward.

The Card take their act to the Oregons next weekend. It’s been quite a while since the team has played away. Oregon has a good record so far, so we may be in for a rough ride on Uncle Phil’s plastic pitch. :cautious:

No Davidson, Macario, Haley, Tran, and now Smith breaking her leg last night. Couple that with Boissiere and Xiao both being extremely limited, I can’t see this Stanford team going very far. Don’t know the extent of injuries outside of Davidson and Smith, but it’s clear they are hurting. They are still good of course, but imagine how good this team could have been.

Its a shame, but they are well capable of overcoming. Everyone has injuries and most are nowhere near as deep as Stanford are. Its a team game and there is only one ball out there. I still think they can win it all.

    Stanford 2-0 Utah

A perfunctory win over Utah was marred by a serious leg injury to the precocious freshman Sophia Smith. All the best to Sophia for a complete recovery.

    Stanford 7-0 Colorado

On a beautiful afternoon down at The Farm, Stanford slaughtered the previously unbeaten Buffaloes to the tune of 7 unanswered goals. I felt bad for Sophia trying to get up so many times from the crutches and wheelchair trying to celebrate with her teammates. Perhaps it was because it was Senior Day, the Card started strong and never looked back.

2nd minute Greubel launches a CK that Civana deposited as a massive header. Just like that, 1-0. Forget about having Jaye or Macario launching lollipops ever again. From this point forward, if and when Greubel’s on the field, have her take it from the right corner. She sends it with the the right pace and arc, the recipient just has to redirect it in.

5 minutes later, Civana was taken down in the box and Jordan deposited the gift to make it 2-0. The game has barely just began, 7 minutes in, the old Stanford Indians have already snuffed the life out of the Buffaloes.

It was good to see Civana seemingly healthy again and rounding out into form at just the right time in the season. At her best when playing as a #9. Unfortunate that she was unable to score a hat-trick within the first 5 minutes. The key with Civana is getting her good service. When Stanford are on, and sending daggers from the flanks ala Napoli, that’s when she’s at her most dangerous. and she was the entire game.

As if the Buffs were getting any respite, Macario just came in and promptly scored on her first touch on a sublime outstep and turn. A very technical goal; the only other Stanford player I’ve seen do that was Kelley O’Hara.

What brought the house down was Kiki’s goal as she carried the ball all the way to the PA and combined on a one-two with Haley. When Stanford are having that much fun creating goals, that means they’re going to score more, as attested to with the 5th, 6th, and 7th goals. all were beautiful to watch as well.

Final "should-have-scored" tally was Stanford 11-2. It was well-played and a wonderful way to end the final regular-season home game.

The last 4 matches are away, and this weekend sees the dreaded Cascadia jaunt. Thursday at Seattle and Sunday at Pullman. Wazzu's always a tough place to play, Wazzu always make it a difficult game to play, and it seems like it's the 4th straight year the CArd are going up there.

    Congratulations to the Pac-12 champions

Regardless of the outcome at Tempe, Stanford are Pac-12 champs and are also assured of a coveted 1-seed. Why even play the game then? At berkeley, You only have 3 healthy subs.

If the ultimate objective is to win another national championship, forego the short-term gain of playing a meaningless game. Forfeit the game.

Take the loss. Rest up the banged-up squad.

I think the quadrants have been pretty much already set up. My crystal ball predicts how the Committee will set up the bracket:

Stanford ___ Santa Clara ____ Tenn ____Virginia
    UNC _______ G'town _________ WVU ___ South Carolina
FSU _______ Baylor __________ TAMU ___USF
UCLA ______ Southern Cal ___ Texas ___ Vandy

    How serious are those injuries?
We all know Davidson and Smith are done for the season. Now Macario missed the last two games. McGrady went out midway against WSU and has been out ever since. Haley has been gone at least the last three or four games. Boissiere is playing but seems very limited coming off the bench playing around 30 minutes. They are still good, but I can’t imagine them going very far without 6 of your top players.

I agree that a small roster will make it very difficult for Stanford to go far. I do think they're good enough to get there, but they need to clean up their play. They leave a lot of goals on the field. The frontline at Wazzu, Berkeley, and Tempe should have put those games to bed in H1 but missed more sitters than actual goals scored. You need all those goals when your GK has a history of making bonehead decisions that don't even involve saving a shot. In tight Tournament games, this might be the difference between advancing and going home

I'd say that the winner in the Stanford quadrant has a 25% chance of winning it all. I would say that the odds are the same for the winner of the FSU quadrant.

G'town quadrant is wide-open. Wouldn't surprise me to see Wazzu triumph over G'town. I'd say an ACC team from that quad will emerge as a CC team.

I'd say that the winner of the UNC quadrant has a 50% chance of winning it all. UNC are the prohibitive favorites, as they get home-field advantage all the way to the championship game, if they make it that far. Whoever can upset UNC will emerge as favorite. If you can beat the home team at their own field, then you can beat any other team.
