One of the best things about the growth of soccer in North America is seeing all the new crests. I couldn't find a thread dedicated just to all our soccer crests, good and bad, so I decided to make one... HFX Wanderers is sharp. Easily my favorite from the bunch. I'm not really sure the mindset behind not having the club's name in the crest. Seems like a gimmie. And I'm not a huge fan of really skinny crests but I appreciate someone trying to be different.
I think I actually preferred the early MLS logos. The Crew, Galaxy, Revs, and Metrostars in particular stood out to me as having a nice balance between a traditional American sports look and American soccer as a modern-feeling institution. The Euro crest look is often pretty boring, imo.
Agreed on all counts, HFX Wanderers is my favorite as well. Pacific FC put out a nice explanation for their crest, but it's so skinny, and the text is microscopic... Emblem Inspiration Pacific FC: Emblem Story

Honestly feel like the US soccer logos are awful for the most part. Reminds me of NFL, which reminds me of secondary mascot logos you see in high school and college. I guess it’s just the American style. It’s getting better. I’ve seen basketball teams use those beautiful throwback crests.
Designing the Loons: The story behind Minnesota United’s search for a crest Minnesota United has a really nice crest, but if they ever start a USL team I hope they bring back the Minnesota Stars with their old NASL crest:
Given the sheer number of teams in the US, when you include the PDL, NPSL, and UPSL, I agree with you. But most of the current MLS crests sidestep the NFL-mentality and resemble traditional soccer crests. New England is the only glaring exception. Even teams like Orlando, Dallas, and DC use their animals cleanly in their crests.
Orlando and Dallas are two of the better crests. I see a lot of the cartoony influences on several MLS team crests. They tend to go with those bold Hollywood movie fonts (an American phenomenon as far as I know) which IMO are just eyesores on a crest. I like the Miami one though. Follows crest etiquette almost perfectly. Generally I think it shows that American fandom doesn’t identify with crests. They identify with mascots, initials, or name logos. Also shoutout to OC SC. The colors are questionable but the crest is simple, symmetrical, true to its city, and doesn’t use the borrowed phrase of FC that sadly a lot of teams are using.

This looks like they should be the Columbus Crew's USL afffiliate... The PDL team has a more fitting name/crest
The "explanation" is laughable nonsense Improved version that they will definitely not use 15 min. redesign time: I actually dig the @NewMexicoUTD crest, mostly - it just doesn't feel...New Mexico-y enough. So here's an evolution. Round the edges of the Zia design elements and replace the diamond. Bring in the deep red from the flag. Slight shift to typeface. pic.twitter.com/X5IYGMJvFS— Mike Pendleton (@phat7deuce) October 9, 2018
I love Mike Pendleton's tweet. I get that the zia was repped, but without looking at the team's design manual, I wouldn't have picked up on where/how. Now I understand, but it's not enough. I like the zia around the 18, and, as I was saying to myself, the crest needed red on it. I do hope they do at least an alternate kit with their flag colors on it, because that's a pretty big part of the state brand. I need to fly out the door, but if somebody doesn't beat me to it (and I invite you to if you want), I'll discuss the San Diego situation, which I find a bit confusing these days. That's my neck of the woods.
Chicago Fire crest redesign by some graphic designer... http://www.enriquealvaradodesign.com/blog/thelbd/chicago-fire
So replace one of the most interesting badges with a generic shield... I might be up for swapping the C for the axes though.
Pro soccer is coming to Oakland. #OaklandFirstAlways pic.twitter.com/9aLHuGeBD0— Oakland Roots (@oaklandrootssc) October 29, 2018 I was curious as to what the new logo would look like with black & white roots instead of the colors (which are cool and I dig them, but can seem a little busy too). I did a rough job of that and also with a black semicircle below the tree. @Hodulbass pic.twitter.com/SDSgz6fMKB— Colton Coreschi (@cjcoreschi) October 29, 2018 Variations to come— Tommy Hodul (@Hodulbass) October 29, 2018 An outline of the city borders of Oakland— Oakland Roots (@oaklandrootssc) October 30, 2018
Their current crest is hideous IMO. That being said, this designer basically ripped off the West Ham crest. In regard to the original, I've always seen the mix of red, blue, and gray as a complete eyesore. If they used the colors from the flag of Chicago it would improve the current logo instantly. Very cheap, very fast color fill in of what that would look like: https://imgur.com/fOeoBSB EDIT - Colors work better this way actually:
